The Samsung Galaxy S9 includes an incredible 960fps super slow motion feature. However, it only allows you to record videos of a few seconds. So that we understand the technical complexity that this entails, Samsung has published an article on its official blog in which it explains the challenges of introducing super slow motion on a mobile. Let's see how the Korean manufacturer managed to introduce this feature in the Samsung Galaxy S9.
The main problem came from the sensors used in the camera. The company uses CMOS sensors in its best smartphones, which manage to capture more light. However, when the image is exposed sequentially, they cause distortion. So the company's engineers needed to create a CMOS sensor fast enough to reduce distortion problems and counteract camera shake. All this in order to offer users a new experience.
A much faster sensor
So the solution to achieving super slow motion at 960 fps was to create a sensor four times faster than previous models. This required better circuitry, but also more bandwidth for both image sensor outputs and video processing.
To do this, Samsung developed an image sensor made up of a three-layer battery: the CMOS sensor, a fast read circuit and a dedicated DRAM memory chip.
Thanks to this combination, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is capable of recording at 960 fps, 32 times slower than normal video. Although video capture at this speed is only 0.2 seconds, it is subsequently stretched to create a final video of about 6 seconds. You can also create a GIF (animated image) that occupies between 3 and 15 MB of storage.
The terminal's sensor is capable of automatically detecting movement and capturing it as it occurs. Additionally, the user can select a single shot in super slow motion or take a multiple shot with up to 20 segments in super slow motion.
