- How to know if a mobile has MHL
Although the technology has been in the market for a few years, today there are not exactly few who are looking for mobiles with MHL. This system, which we will talk about next, was embraced almost 10 years ago by some telephone manufacturers, such as Samsung and LG. A decade later, most devices lack MHL in favor of more advanced systems, such as the USB 3.1 connection. Let's see what MHL is and which phones and tablets are compatible in 2020.
First of all, what is MHL, how does it work and what is it for?
MHL, also known as mobile high-definition link or mobile high-definition link , is a system based on a type of standard connection that allows connecting portable electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to an external screen, which can be a TV, a monitor or a projector. In this way we can duplicate the image of the device in question on a screen with a larger diagonal.
This connection is typically made through an MHL to HDMI adapter, which typically consists of a micro USB or USB Type-C connection to allow for phone compatibility. We leave you below with a list of accessories compatible with MHL:
Why the MHL is disappearing from mobiles
Since the arrival of the USB type C connector to mobile phones, a new standard based on the USB 3.1 certification has been implemented that allows connecting a mobile phone to an external monitor by using an adapter to duplicate the screen image.
In brands such as Samsung or Huawei, a set of tools is also integrated that turn the interface shown on the screen into a virtual desktop very similar to that of Windows, Linux and Mac. This is the case of the Galaxy S8, S9, S10 and S20 or the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro case with Samsung Dex and Huawei PC Mode.
The advantage of this system over MHL is that the maximum supported resolution is much higher. To this is added that the connection via USB 3.1 is not limited to duplicating the image, since the content may be different from that shown on the mobile screen.
List of MHL compatible mobiles and tablets in 2020
The website of the MHL Tech organization has a list of phones compatible with this technology, although it is true that some of the most recent terminals are not included despite the fact that they do have the aforementioned technology.

How to know if a mobile has MHL
Although there are several applications on Google Play that supposedly allow us to reveal whether the phone is compatible with MHL, the truth is that the result is quite random and erratic in our tests. For this same reason, we recommend going to the support forums of the brand in question to request information from the manufacturer. In general, the coordinators will respond to our query quickly.
