This year's Mobile World Congress has made it clear that 5G technology is the future of mobile communications. The official standard has already been approved, and it promises to be up to 20 times faster than current mobile connections. Although it would still be a year before its deployment, we are already learning about the first 5G devices on the market. Samsung, LG, Xiaomi or ZTE are some of the manufacturers that already have a 5G phone in their catalog, and this is just the beginning.
The teams have been unveiled at the latest edition of the Mobile World Congress that is taking place in Barcelona. Next, we review all of them, pioneers in this technology, which will mark a before and after in the communications sector.
Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
The current flagship of the Korean firm will also have a 5G version. Its arrival is scheduled for the summer, although it cannot connect to a 5G network for now. Unlike the standard model, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G will have more screen or sensor for 3D scanning. At the design level there will be no changes, it will be the same as that of its range brothers, but with a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel. Inside we will also find the same eight-core Exynos processor from the Galaxy S10 family, accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
Also, it is necessary to highlight its three main sensors, or a 4,500 milliamp battery, which also has 25W super fast charging and fast wireless charging.
Huawei Mate X
Another of the 5G mobiles announced at the Mobile World Congress has been the Huawei Mate X. The phone not only has this technology, it also folds so that it becomes a tablet or mobile. The equipment consists of an 8-inch AMOLED panel in tablet format, which when folded shows two screens in mobile format of 6.6 and 6.38 inches with resolutions of 2,480 x 2,200, 2,480 x 1,148 and 2,480 x 892 pixels, respectively..
The body of the Mate X is made of metal and a material similar to synthetic leather that is thinner than that of a conventional tablet. Specifically, it is 5.4 millimeters thick with the tablet unfolded and only 11 millimeters thick with the tablet closed. The technical specifications of the Huawei Mate X are very similar to those of the Huawei Mate 20 and 20 Pro. It includes a Kirin 980 processor, although in this case with a 5G modem, dubbed Balong 5000, compatible with the latest 5G networks. This SoC is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of space for storage.
Likewise, its photographic section is composed of three main sensors of 40, 20 and 8 megapixels with focal apertures f / 1.8, f / 2.2 and f / 2.4. On the other hand, it has a battery based on two 4,500 mAh modules, which together with the 55W Super Charge fast charge guarantees a fairly efficient autonomy. Even so, we will have to try it better to clear up doubts. Huawei has reported that it will be possible to acquire the mobile from the second half of the year at a price from 2,300 euros.
LG V50 ThinQ 5G
LG's new 5G mobile is also a foldable device, although nothing like the Mate X. The company has opted for an additional second screen, which is attached to the terminal as if it were an optional accessory. Basically, it snaps on like a case and folds up the base display, making the phone sort of like a tablet. Of course, adding this extra panel adds a centimeter and a half of thickness and 131 grams of weight, something that can be quite annoying, especially for those who are used to using thin phones.
By the way, the main screen is OLED and offers a size of 6.4 inches with a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio and QHD + resolution (3,120 x 1,440 pixels). The one that can be attached to it is 6.2 inches with Full HD + resolution, also OLED. Compatibility with 5G networks and this cover-screen system to turn it into a folding device are two of the great features of this new terminal. However, it also includes a triple main camera. It is a set similar to the LG G8 ThinQ, which is also unveiled at MWC.
This system consists of a sensor with a resolution of 16 megapixels for wide-angle photos with an aperture of f / 1.9. The second sensor has a resolution of 12 megapixels and pixels larger than 1.4μm. The last sensor is a 12-megapixel telephoto, capable of achieving a two-fold optical zoom without loss of quality. As for the rest of the features, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G also comes powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, as well as a 4,000 mAh battery. At the moment its landing date and its official price have not been confirmed, although we already look forward to testing it more closely.
ZTE Axon 10 Pro
The ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G is the first mobile of the Asian company to have 5G. We will not have to wait long to see it on the market, as its arrival is scheduled for the first half, both in China and Europe. ZTE demonstrated during the provision of the phone that thanks to 5G the Axon 10 Pro is capable of reaching a speed of up to 2.2 GB per second. To give you an idea, it is possible to download a movie in 4K quality in less than half a minute.
To be able to cope with this incredible speed, the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor inside. This model will also offer a triple main sensor or on-screen fingerprint reader. It is expected to be available in Spain, but for now we do not have exact details of its departure date or price.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G
Months ago Xiaomi gave clues that it was preparing a mobile with 5G technology inside. The company showed a prototype, the confirmation of which came in December. Months later, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G has become one of the main protagonists of the Mobile World Congress when it comes to 5G mobiles. To work in conditions with these types of networks, the Mi Mix 3 in its 5G version equips inside a Snapdragon 855 processor and Snapdragon X50 modem, which will allow it to improve 20 times in sustained performance.
The photographic section of the terminal consists of a double 12 megapixel sensor with apertures f / 1.8 and f / 2.4. It also includes a 6.39-inch AMOLED panel and Full HD + resolution. Although the power consumption when using 5G networks may be higher than with 4G LTE, we found a 600 mAh increase in the battery capacity of the Mi Mix 3 5G compared to the standard model. It reaches 3,800 mAh, and also has fast charging and wireless charging.
Xiaomi will launch the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G in May at a price of 600 euros, which is an increase of only 100 euros when it comes to the standard model.
OnePlus 5G
OnePlus has shown a 5G mobile prototype at the Mobile World Congress. The terminal has been seen through glass, protected by a cover. Its design is not appreciated, but if it is shown next to a sign that indicates that it is OnePlus' 5G phone for this year, equipped with a Snapdragon 855 processor. There is no more data or details, although this makes it official that the signature Asian also prepares its own terminal with this technology.
Moto Z3 + Moto Mod 5G
The Moto Z3 will have the possibility of connecting to 5G networks in due course thanks to a 5G module, which can be purchased separately when the time comes. This Moto Mod has a very simple design, and it adheres to the pins on the back of the terminal as if it were a cover. In addition, it equips a 2,000 mAh battery, which will allow the device to be charged. According to the company, this Moto Mod 5G will allow us to navigate up to 10 times faster than with 4G connectivity, with a greater connection and lower latency. For now, the accessory has been announced for the US operator Verizon, so we will have to wait for more details from the company, as well as price.
Not only will it be available for the Moto Z3, it will also work on the Moto Z2 and more models from the company are expected to be supported.
Oppo and Sony
Lastly, Oppo and Sony will succumb to the charms of 5G as well, launching their own devices throughout this year. Of course, both terminals are a mystery. As Oppo itself has confirmed during MWC, its equipment will be powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor, and will also integrate the X50 connectivity modem. Similarly, Sony would have shown a 5G mobile prototype during this edition of the Mobile World Congress, although it is not known what its internal characteristics will be like or when it will be launched on the market. There is no choice but to wait to find out.
