Once again, and despite the problems, Huawei launches a new P family. Those high-end terminals that bet on photography as the main pillar. There are four this time: Huawei P40 Lite, previously presented, the normal Huawei P40, the Huawei P40 Pro with some improvements and, the top of this family, the Huawei P40 Pro +. All of them (except the Lite) with a main camera of 50 megapixels as the maximum exponent, capable of portraying scenes with great detail even in low light. But here we are going to focus on what aims to be the star model of the family: the Huawei P40 Pro. With the best of its range without reaching excessive prices.
If we look at its design we find a robust mobile with a good construction. The materials are metal and glass, and Huawei repeats again with shades already known from the brand: the new Twightlight called this time Ice White, a classic black and a blue with various shades known as Deep Sea Blue. The interesting thing is that they have broken the dynamics of the glass cases that fill with fingers and have launched a new finish with two different colors. It is a matte finish with less shine and without traces that can be found in gray (Silver Frost) or a kind of peach pink with golden touches that they have called Blush Gold. All with an IP68 finish to be resistant to water and dust without any problem.

Oh by the way! Unlike the Mate 30 Pro, this Huawei P40 Pro does include volume buttons, and it does not take advantage of the curvature of the screen to have tactile control of sound and notifications. Much more comfortable and effective. Although the curvature is still there on a screen that now comes from side to side and top to bottom. With also rounded corners. Which makes it more ergonomic.
The fingerprint reader has also undergone changes. Although it is still buried in the screen, it has grown 30 percent compared to the P30 Pro, and it is also now 30 percent faster. All this on a screen that, by the way, measures 6.58 inches diagonally. It is very wide or very long due to its 19.8: 9 aspect ratio. All this with an AMOLED panel capable of displaying images at a good FullHD resolution. But most importantly: it displays them at a refresh rate of 90Hz. So the images are clear and the animations look fluid from start to finish.
Four cameras see more than three
The key point of this Huawei P40 Pro is its camera system. A capsule that is markedly marked on the rest of the terminal. And it is a bulky component that stands out to give itself, on the other hand, the importance it deserves. All this to house four sensors with different reasons.
There is a 50 megapixel main sensor that stands out for its size. It's 1 / 1.28 inches, and they've called it Ultravision. It has the RYYB technology that we already saw in the previous family to better take advantage of the light information in the environment, so it achieves a greater dynamic range, less noise and a faster focus in low light environments.
It is accompanied by a 40-megapixel secondary sensor with a wide-angle lens. And a third sensor (RYYB) of 12 megapixels with telephoto lens in telescopic format to achieve up to 50 zoom increases. Yes, digital. Although with AIS and OIS stabilization and object tracking to help you frame the detail you want to capture.
The interesting thing is that the images are processed by the engine called Huawei XD Fusion Engine, and are supported by the Artificial Intelligence they have trained. In this way they improve the photos to make a white balance that helps improve skin color, texture, light in the scene, see defined hair, etc.
A Live photo version or a small 4K video has also been created from which to extract frames to get the best possible scene. The mobile automatically recommends it to you as it can analyze up to 7 types of sports, 10 postures, facial expressions and scenes. And not only that, it also removes people who accidentally pass by the photo. All this with the possibility of finding reflections and eliminating them, in case you photograph an object behind a window, for example.
And beware that the camera for selfies is not far behind with its 32 megapixels and a secondary sensor to measure the depth of the scene. Enough qualities to show a portrait or bokeh with a more natural and defined cutout.
And the same happens in video, with qualities that we already knew such as recording at 7680 frames per second, recording in HDR or 4K at 60 frames. The novelty here is the stabilization of the telephoto and, above all, the audio zoom, with which we can focus on capturing the sound of a concert if we zoom on the stage to avoid the noise of the public.
Brain with 5G
In terms of performance there are no surprises. And it is that the Huawei P40 Pro, and the rest of its family except the Lite, includes the Kirin 990. A processor that integrates the 5G module to support a good number of bands of this type. More than enough power to move applications and games (together with the Mali G76 graphics chip), and also to include all the Artificial Intelligence that helps with photographs and mobile use.
Of course, 5G is not only the advance in connections of this Huawei P40 Pro, it is also its WiFi 6. A connectivity with which a download of up to 2,400 Mbps is assured. Apart from this, it does not lack anything in terms of NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi Direct, etc. Of course, do not look for the 3.5 mm mini jack port. That one disappeared a couple of generations ago in Huawei's P family and has not been seen again.
The rest of its data sheet is made up of an 8GB RAM. It does not match the top that is seen in other manufacturers that add up to 12 GB. But it is more than enough for smooth use. At least during our tests. And, regarding storage, we find a capacity of 256GB that can be expanded with an NM card. Of course, this card shares a hole in the tray with the nano SIM. So you can have two nano SIM or one SIN and one NM memory card.
With autonomy but without Google applications
There is an elephant in the room, and it is the absence of Google applications on this mobile. Tools like Google Maps or the Google keyboard that are used daily. But even worse: there is no Google Play Store to comfortably download other tools such as WhatsApp. Nothing that Huawei cannot replace with alternatives through the AppGallery, its own app store. Or with the Phone Clone tool with which it searches official sources for the applications of your old mobile that it does not have in its own store. But it is not typical, nor what you are used to. And it is a problem to face when acquiring this mobile that must be taken into account. It is true that there are always methods to get around these problems, and we have already found one, but it is not as comfortable as installing a mere application.
On the other hand, we must talk about the battery data. They are only 4,200 mAh. A figure that seems low, but we have already shown in our tests that it offers autonomy for the whole day with regular use. All this even though we have the screen in high resolution and with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. A very efficient energy management to which Huawei is already accustomed.
