Weeks after the launch of the first Android Q beta, Google has already launched the second one, meeting the established deadlines. This new beta arrives with the April security patch and some notable improvements. At the moment, it is only available for the three generations of Google Pixel phones targeted at the Android beta program.
The second beta of Android Q is the last that we will see until May, which leads us to think that the company will take advantage of its annual Google I / O 2019 developer event, which will begin on May 7, to introduce the third beta of the platform, and with it the most outstanding news to come. In any case, these are the ones that are present in this second beta.
Dual SIM support
Owners of a Pixel 3 with the possibility of using an eSIM, will be able to enjoy from this second beta the Dual SIM capabilities of the device (physical SIM + eSIM).
Notifications in bubbles
Android Q beta 2 includes bubble notifications for all apps for the first time. What does this mean? With bubbles, users will be able to quickly multitask from anywhere on their device. These float over the content of other apps and follow the user where he is. Likewise, the bubbles are capable of expanding, giving information about the application, and can contract when they are not being used.
Gesture navigation improvements
From now on, it will be possible to switch between applications more easily and quickly, simply by gesturing from the start button to the right. It will not be necessary to hold the gesture for a few seconds, as was the case in previous versions.
Renewed battery icon
Google has revamped the battery level indicator in the status bar. From now on, the empty space showing the used battery part no longer appears in light gray color if not completely transparent. In addition, the corners have also been made rounder to give it a more consistent appearance with the system interface.
New apps section in settings
The Applications and notifications category that is within the settings section has also been renewed in this second beta of Android Q. Now, the upper part reveals the last three open apps. Just below are the available options.
Top music notifications
With beta 1 came the possibility of knowing which song and which artist is being listened to just below the clock in Always-on Display mode. In this new version, the playback is highlighted more clearly with the application icon and the name of the online song and artist below.
Changes in volume settings
Android 9 Pie redesigned the volume slider, but it also made the volume of calls and notifications very difficult to access. In this second beta version of Android Q, Google has made it easier to access the volume sliders with a new pop-up menu. In this pop-up panel, users will be able to quickly adjust media, call, ringtone, and alarm volume with four sliders. The panel will appear over any open application, making adjusting the volume less intrusive compared to previous versions.
Devices compatible with Android Q beta 2
As with beta 1, the second beta of Android Q is available only for Pixel devices.
- Pixel
- Pixel XL
- Pixel 2
- Pixel 2 XL
- Pixel 3
- Pixel 3 XL
- Official Android Emulator
If you have any of these models and want to try it, you just have to go to the developers website to download it, or sign up for the Android Program Beta. You will have to wait for the OTA update to be available on your computer.
And, when will new betas arrive? The third and fourth are scheduled for May and June, respectively. Then this rhythm will change until the landing of the final version of Android Q, something that will happen next fall. You already know that if you have a Google Pixel and want to install it to test the news, the logical thing is that you may find some bugs and errors. Please note that the system is not yet polished and is in its early stages of development.
