The possibility that Samsung ends up introducing it has been rumored for a long time. Well, today we saw it for the first time, at the Samsung Developer Conference 2018 that started today, Wednesday, November 7, in San Francisco. It is about the folding screen that has been talked about a lot during all these weeks and that now, it seems, is closer than we thought.
Samsung has not released any device that has it integrated. But he has been encouraged to show it as it is. We are still facing a prototype, so it is early to make statements or predictions for the future.
What we know for sure, from Justin Denison, Samsung's executive vice president of mobile product marketing, is that what he was showing the audience wasn't the house's folding smartphone. At the moment, the South Korean has not revealed anything more about the company's plans with this screen. What they cannot avoid, logically, is speculation.
A foldable AMOLED screen
The reports that have been leaked so far tell us about the possibility that the AMOLED, foldable screen can be integrated into a mobile device. This will considerably change the concept of smartphone that we have handled so far.
The documentation suggests that the phone will have an external display, which will allow it to be used as a normal mobile. Then the device can be deployed, in two parts, to function as a tablet. This is an interesting advantage for those who use their smartphone for very different things, such as communicating through WhatsApp, viewing maps or enjoying their favorite movies or series.
In the latter case, it is sure to be great to be able to enjoy a slightly larger screen. Everything indicates that it will have dimensions of 7.3 inches, in total. At the moment no resolution has been specified.
But this is not all. Because Samsung's new folding screen system is specially focused on productivity. It seems that the experience will be very intuitive and will allow users to work across all screens continuously. In addition, there will be an option - always according to these theories - which will be called 'multi-active window', with which up to three applications can be run at the same time.
It already has a name: Infinity Flex Display
The Samsung screen has already been baptized. It is not just a flexible panel. It's called 'Infinity Flex Display'. To show it to the world, Samsung completely turned off the lights in the auditorium. And it is that everything indicates that behind that screen a real device was hidden. In addition, the screen in question was hidden inside a case. The only thing the manufacturer wanted to show was the screen in question. It is still early for the rest.
The technology that allows these panels to fold has been patented by Samsung. The screen also has a protective layer with a special polymer. This means that it can be bent without problems, but that in turn, it is very flexible. For everything to work as planned, a folding adhesive has been used, designed for the occasion, so that the parts of the screen do not separate in any case.
All that Samsung has been able to advance is that this device is real and that it will see the light of day in 2019. The completely flexible panel will be combined with another very important novelty: and that is the user interface. This one, apparently, has been developed - by now the work is done, yes - in collaboration with Google.
The most advantageous thing about the screen has to do with its high customization possibilities, with which it can adapt very well to the needs of users.
