From left to right, the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S9 + and Samsung Galaxy S9
1.A more powerful camera for photos at night
The photographic section is always key on a mobile. Samsung knows this and has made most of the improvements to the camera part. The Samsung Galaxy S9 maintains a single sensor on the main camera, like the Galaxy S8. But in return it introduces a very interesting function that will give us a lot of play. A double aperture depending on whether we take photos in environments with good light or in low light conditions. In the first case, the aperture is f / 2.4, while the second mode drops to f / 1.5 (the lower the value, the brighter the photos). Without a doubt, an important advance compared to the f / 1.7 aperture of the Samsung Galaxy S8 since the photos are 28% brighter.
But that is not all. We also have a new mode that shoots twelve photos almost automatically to enhance images in dark environments. According to the company, this allows us to reduce noise by up to 30%.
2 hello to super slow motion
It is a function that until now we have only seen in Sony phones like the Sony Xperia XZ1. And it couldn't take long to get to other flagships. The Samsung Galaxy S9 (and the Samsung Galaxy S9 +, of course) integrates a slow motion capable of capturing 960 frames per second with HD resolution. The result is impressive, as can be seen in the video in situ made by our colleague David G. Mateo. Plus, it features motion detection to keep the action in focus. Of course, as in the Xperia XZ1 I would like to see the results in low light conditions (the image on the Sony came out quite noisy). Super slow motion videos can be turned into animated GIFs to send on WhatsApp.
3.The animated emojis are here
Do they sound familiar? The iPhone X launched this function, and the Samsung Galaxy S9 did not want to be left behind with its AR Emoji. These are nice emojis that are created through the analysis of hundreds of points on our face. Just by taking a photo with the front camera. After the analysis, our avatar will move and react with us through the front camera. In total, there are 18 predefined expressions that can turn us into characters like Mickey Mouse. It is to be expected that as the weeks go by the number of characters and reactions will expand.
4.Even more panoramic and better used panoramic screen
It is a small change, which can go unnoticed. But Samsung has wanted to make even more use of the space to introduce the S9 screen and has reduced the frames both at the top and the bottom to the maximum. The result is a panel with an 18.5: 9 format, compared to the 18: 9 of the Samsung Galaxy S8. In addition, to take advantage of the panoramic screen, it includes a mode in which to reply to messages when you are watching a video or movie.
5.The fingerprint reader, in the right place
It was one of the big reviews the S8 (and also S8 +) received last year. Samsung brought its fingerprint reader to the rear, but to maintain a cleaner design it placed it on the same line as the rear camera. A position that makes it very easy for us to put our finger directly on the sensor of the camera itself, dirtying the lens. And that also forced us to lengthen the finger in an unnatural way. The company has learned from this mistake and now the reader sits below the camera sensor.
6.AKG speakers with Dolby Atmos
The Samsung Galaxy S9 also improves in an aspect that is not usually touched so much, but that is important. We are talking about the audio emitted by the mobile itself (and not through headphones). This point is important when we want to show a video to our friends in a noisy room or listen to music on the street. The S9 improves the audio of the S8 thanks to two AKG speakers that are located at the bottom and top of the mobile and have achieved Dolby Atmos certification. That translates into more immersive and defined audio, with good power.
7. New Samsung DeX
The Samsung Galaxy S9 also launches a new version of one of its most interesting accessories. For those who still do not know the Samsung DeX, it is a base to which the mobile phone and a monitor are connected to turn it into a computer. The new base has as its main novelty the fact that we can use the mobile screen like a mouse.
8.Smart scanner
Finally, the Samsung Galxy S9 incorporates a smart scanner. This scanner combines iris recognition with facial recognition to make mobile unlocking easier and improve security. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has these two sensors, but takes advantage of them separately.
