One of the most common problems when using the mobile with a mask on is that we cannot unlock our iPhone. It happens, in models with Face ID. That is, from iPhone X onwards (except for iPhone SE 2020, which has Touch ID). Fortunately , there is a very practical trick to unlock iPhone with mask. We tell you two options.
Use the new iOS 13.5 feature
The first option is to make use of the new feature of iSO 13.5. The update is now available, and one of the new options is that Apple now detects, through Face ID sensors, if we are wearing the mask. If we have it, the terminal will quickly show the numeric keypad to unlock the iPhone with a code. We will not have to wait for the Face ID to not recognize us and then wait for the screen to show the code, as it happened in previous versions.
To unlock directly with the code when we wear the mask, we must first update to iOS 13.5. Go to Settings> General> Software update. Then click on 'Download and install'. Now when you wear the mask, just unlock the terminal and slide from the bottom. The code will be quickly displayed.
The Face ID is able to recognize if we are using a mask. If we do not wear it, the terminal will not show the unlock code option directly, but will have that period of time until the numeric keyboard appears.
The trick to use Face ID with a mask on your iPhone
So you have to configure Face ID to use it later with a mask.
This trick may be more useful, but there are several things to keep in mind. First of all, that in this way the Face ID can be less precise and unlock similar faces, since it will not capture all the information of our face. Also, the unlocking will not work as fast as when we do not have a mask, so it may take us a couple of tries before accessing the iPhone. On the other hand, this trick only works with surgical masks.
For this trick we need to configure Face ID again. Therefore, our face of the system will have to be reset. Head to Settings> Face ID and code. Enter the unlock code. Finally, click on 'Reset Face ID'.
Now, set up Face ID again, but follow these steps.
- Look for a sheet, it is necessary to register the Face iD and then recognize us with a mask.
- With the folio, cover a third of your face. The lower right area. Let the camera detect half a mouth and half a nose.
- Click on 'Set Face ID'
- Scan your face with the sheet covering one third of the face. Don't take it off, and shake your head with the folio
- Continue even if you get a warning, the Face ID will continue to recognize.
- Do the same on the second scan
Now, Face ID will recognize you with a mask . In my case I have had to make several attempts until it recognizes me. The mask has to be somewhat looser and only cover the lower area of the nose.
Face ID uses different patterns of our face. Among them: the eyes, the nose and the mouth. However, the sensors can understand that our mouth is covered with a scarf or kerchief, and unlock.
