After months of leaks and rumors, Huawei's new P40 series is official. There are three devices that the Chinese firm has launched and the Huawei P40 is the most basic of them all. The company has decided to keep the screen size of the Huawei P30 by significantly reducing the bezels. Beyond the visual changes that the new generation represents, the greatest novelty of the P40 comes with the photographic section, which is now reinforced by sensors with higher resolution and capacity, maintaining the lens arrangement of its predecessor. This improvement also reaches the front cameras. Yes, front cameras, because the phone uses two sensors, as we will see below.

The cameras, the starting point of the Huawei P40
There are three cameras that we find on the back of the device. The configuration is traced to that of the Huawei P30, as we anticipated at the beginning. Led by a Leica certified 50-megapixel sensor, the phone is accompanied by two 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.
The latter is capable of offering a 3x optical zoom level and a 30x digital zoom level. Unfortunately we do not find a periscope lens as if we can find it in its older brothers. In this aspect, the evolution compared to the Huawei P30 is rather scarce.
Beyond this detail, the company has placed special emphasis on Huawei XD Fusion Engine technology. It is an algorithm similar to the one that companies like Google and Apple presented months ago. In summary, this function will allow you to obtain results with greater detail and dynamic range by mixing photos captured at different levels of exposure. In this way, the images will acquire a higher level of definition in the textures, as well as in the shadows and highlights.
If we move to the front, the phone uses a single 32-megapixel sensor accompanied by a complementary sensor that will help improve the bokeh of images captured with Portrait mode. Unlike the Pro and Pro + models, the P40 lacks an infrared sensor to create a 3D map of our face. The good news is that it maintains the facial unlocking of its older brothers.
The hole in the screen reaches the high-end of Huawei
Visually, the main difference of the Huawei P40 with respect to its predecessor is found in the front camera module, which now happens to be stamped on the screen in the form of an extended hole. The frames have also been significantly hand reduced and the screen diagonal is maintained.
Speaking of its screen, the phone uses a 6.1-inch OLED panel and Full HD + resolution. Unfortunately, the terminal does not inherit the screen frequency of its older brothers. The good news is that the phone has a fingerprint sensor embedded in its screen.
As for the rear, Huawei has chosen to install a rather generous module that houses the cameras and the dual-tone LED flash. It maintains glass and aluminum as building materials, something that its predecessor also boasted about.
Huawei's latest hardware without Google services
As expected, the technical section of the phone is equipped with the latest of the latest. Kirin 990 processor from the house, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Although there is a version with 5G connectivity, the international model will lack this feature.
For the rest, the phone maintains the typical high-end connections: NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi compatible with all bands, USB type C 3.1… Perhaps the only tangible improvement is found in the presence of a wireless charging system of nothing less than 27W. It is accompanied by a 40 W fast charging system and a 3,800 mAh battery.
And what about Google services? Unfortunately, the situation between Huawei and Google has forced the former to discard any application of the North American giant. Android 10 under the latest version of EMUI 10 is the system under the guts of the phone. App Gallery will be the access point to download applications on the phone.
Price and availability of the Huawei P40 in Spain
The Huawei P40 will go on sale in Europe and Spain for a starting price of 800 euros in its only version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The exact departure date is unknown and if a version with 5G will finally arrive in Spain. We will update the article as soon as Huawei confirms the data.
