Samsung has unveiled a new processor that will become part of its new mobile phones for the mid-range. It is the Exynos 980, which is characterized by being the first to include a 5G modem. We are facing a great step, since to date the company's 5G-compatible devices always made use of modems external to the SoC, whether they were based on Exynos or Qualcomm. The problem is that compared to fully integrated 4G solutions, they took up more space and increased energy consumption.
The new Exynos 980 has features for the mid-range. Based on the 8 nanometer FinFET process technology, this chip has eight cores: six of them Cortex A55 at 1.8 GHz for less demanding tasks and another two Cortex A77 at 2.2 Ghz for those that need higher performance. The GPU is a Mali-G76 MP5. Likewise, it is compatible with networks from 2G to 5G, offering connectivity of up to 2.55 GB in 5G networks below 6 GHz and being able to increase to 3.55 GB when combining LTE and 5G connectivity.
Apart from 5G connectivity, neural power is another of the great features of the new processor. According to the company, the performance of its NPU is 2.7 times better than that of its predecessor. This is due to improvements in the Cortex A77 architecture of its performance cores. Also, the Exynos 980 has support for UFS 2.1 storage, as well as a maximum screen resolution of 3,360 x 1,440, lower than the 4,096 x 2,160 of the Exynos 9825. To all this we must add support for sensors up to 108 megapixels, so it is perfect for the new Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, which the company has manufactured in collaboration with Xiaomi.
Samsung has commented that full-scale production of the Exynos 980 will start later this year. At the moment we do not know which terminals of the company will have it inside. We imagine that some outstanding models of the A family or the next flagship of the South Korean firm.
