YouTube is, along with Netflix and other streaming video services, one of the applications that consumes the most megabytes on our mobile. Fortunately, the official app allows us to change the resolution of the video when playing it, in such a way that we can reduce the impact of our rate in terms of mobile data. But how many megabytes does YouTube consume on mobile? And most importantly, how many megabytes does a YouTube video consume on mobile? We see it below.
This is what a YouTube video consumes on mobile
The cost of megabytes that a YouTube video causes in our mobile data rate is something that may vary depending on aspects such as the resolution of the video or the number of videos suggested within the same video. This does not mean that we cannot define a certain amount of megabytes for each type of resolution.
As of today, YouTube estimates the following amount of data for every minute of video:
- Video at 144p resolution: 1.90 MB per minute of video
- Video at 240p resolution: 2.70 MB per minute of video
- 360p resolution video: 4.40 MB per minute of video
- Video at 480p resolution: 7.70 MB per minute of video
- Video at HD resolution (720p): 14.50 MB per minute of video
- Video at Full HD (1080p) resolution: 27.61 MB per minute of video
To calculate the total amount of megabytes consumed by a video, we will have to multiply the amounts we have just seen by the minutes of video viewed at the quality set in mobile data.
In the event that we have viewed, for example, a 5-minute video, the total cost per video is as follows:
- Video at 144p resolution: 9.5 MB for 5 minutes of video
- Video at 240p resolution: 13.5 MB for 5 minutes of video
- 360p resolution video: 22 MB for 5 minutes of video
- Video at 480p resolution: 38.5 MB for 5 minutes of video
- Video at HD resolution (720p): 72.5 MB for 5 minutes of video
- Video at Full HD resolution (1080p): 138.05 MB for 5 minutes of video
So how many megabytes does a 1 hour YouTube video spend? The table is as follows:
- Video at 144p resolution: 114 MB for 1 hour of video
- Video at 240p resolution: 162 MB for 1 hour of video
- 360p resolution video: 264 MB for 1 hour of video
- 480p resolution video: 462 MB for 1 hour of video
- Video at HD resolution (720p): 870 MB for 1 hour of video
- Video at Full HD resolution (1080p): 1.65 GB for 1 hour of video
If we decide to change the quality during the resolution of the video, then the total cost has to be calculated based on the minutes that we have viewed the video at one quality and another.
