The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro arrive with double and triple cameras respectively. During its launch, Apple showed that in addition to offering us the possibility of taking pictures with the ultra-wide angle camera (and with the telephoto lens if we talk about the Pro models), we could also capture video with more than one camera simultaneously. For example, taking a photo with the telephoto and wide-angle camera at the same time. Or with the front camera and the ultra wide angle. This feature has taken a few months to arrive, and it does so with a third-party app, but it is not only available in the latest Apple models. It can also be used on the iPhone Xr or iPhone Xs. So you can record with several cameras at the same time on your iPhone.
FilMiC, a developer of apps related to video recording, has recently added this app to the App Store. It's called DoubleTake and it can be downloaded for free. You can do it here.
Once downloaded, you must allow it to access the camera and the audio recording; Essential requirements to be able to use the app. After that, the main screen will appear, already showing a preview of the wide angle camera. In the four edges we find different options. On the one hand, an icon of an SD card. If we click there we will access the images captured with this app. On the other side is the option to use the split screen. As this function only works when we activate more than one camera, it is hidden until we select the two lenses with which to record. On the other side is the video record button. Finally, the lens option, which allows us to select which cameras we want to record with.
If we press, the three or four lenses of our device will open. This depends on the model:
- iPhone Xr: angle camera and selfie
- iPhone Xs and Xs Max: wide angle, telephoto and selfie cameras
- iPhone 11: wide angle camera, ultra wide angle camera, selfie camera
- iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max: Angle Camera, Ultra Wide Camera, Telephoto Camera, Selfie Camera
Record video with two cameras at the same time on your iPhone
Unfortunately, we will only be able to use two cameras simultaneously. That does not matter the combination. For example, you can choose to use the ultra wide angle and the selfie. Or telephoto and wide-angle. Those selected will appear with a yellow frame.
In the camera selection screen you can also adjust the FPS from 24 to 30. If you want a more fluid movement, click on the option until the 30 fps appears. The red button takes us to the App Store to purchase the paid version, which offers more functions. The image select button also appears. That is, if we want one image to appear on top of another or on a split screen.
Split screen option / picture in picture option.
Once you have selected the cameras, click on the 'Confirm' button that will appear on the side. Now, to record video you will only have to click on the white button in the upper area. Since there is no time limit, you can stop it whenever you want.
The video will be saved in the gallery of the app. You can access it from the SD card icon. If you want to save it in the gallery of your iPhone, click on the select icon, click on the video and finally, select the option to save on reel. If this is the first time, you will need to grant the permissions. Then you can see the video in the gallery and share it on social networks.
