After a little more than a year of waiting, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has been officially presented in Spain and the rest of the European countries. Today we can find it both in the official store and on Amazon and other smartphone sales pages for a price of around 250 euros. In front we find rivals such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, a device with which it shares more similarities than dissimilarities for a price that is currently around 100 euros below the Mi A3. Is it worth spending that difference for the new model of the Chinese brand? We see it in our comparison between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 vs Xiaomi Mi A3.

Design

As heir to the Redmi Note 7 that it is, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has a design practically traced to the latter. Notch in the shape of a drop of water and materials based on aluminum and glass, the only appreciable difference between the two terminals is on the back, specifically in the fingerprint sensor and the camera.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

And is that while the Redmi Note 7 maintains a physical fingerprint sensor and a double camera, the Mi A3 has three cameras and a fingerprint sensor under the screen. Screen whose size difference is only 0.2 inches in favor of the Redmi Note 7, which results in a terminal 0.6 centimeters taller and 0.4 centimeters wider.

Xiaomi Mi A3

The rest of dimensions such as weight or thickness gives us a difference of 0.3 centimeters and 13 grams in favor of the Mi A3, making this a lighter and much more handy terminal.

screen

The screen is perhaps one of the most controversial points of the Mi A3, as it has an OLED panel built under a Pentile matrix. The latter does not stand out for being the most durable or the one that offers the highest quality in terms of colors and viewing angles.

For the rest, the terminal consists of a 6.09-inch panel with HD + resolution and a pixel density per inch of only 282 points. For its part, the Redmi Note 7 has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD panel with Full HD + resolution and 409 pixels per inch. Compared to the Note 7, the panel gives us almost 50% more quality in terms of point density.

Another of the key points of the Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7 has to do with the implementation of the on-screen fingerprint sensor. A sensor that, unlike the optical sensor of the Redmi Note 7, leaves serious doubts as to speed and reliability.

Processor and memory

Next to the screen, one of the most controversial sections of the Xiaomi Mi A3. The latest release from the company is made up of a Snapdragon 665 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64 and 128GB of internal storage. Of the latter, it should be noted that it is based on the UFS 2.1 standard, significantly higher than the eMMC 5.1 standard on which the internal memory of the Redmi Note 7 is based.

As for the specifications of the ciado terminal, the Redmi Note 7 is composed of a Snadpragon 660 processor, 3 and 4 GB of RAM and 32, 64 and 128 GB of internal storage. The difference in performance, beyond technical data, is found precisely in memory technology.

A technology that should provide us with a better experience when opening applications and moving data in memory. When it comes to process and game execution capacity, the difference is minimal. In fact, the only dissimilarity between the Snapdragon 660 vs Snadpragon 665 stems from the manufacturing process (14 nanometers versus the 665's 11 nanometers), resulting in greater energy efficiency.

Finally, it should be noted the implementation of Android One as the base system in the Mi A3. Compared to MIUI 10, the system is more agile when it comes to handling us between applications, not to mention the support in software updates, which extends up to two years.

Photographic set

We arrive at what is possibly one of the most interesting sections of all of the comparison between the Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. And it is that despite the differences between sensors and number of cameras, the two terminals drink from the same 48 megapixel sensor.

A Samsung S5KGM1 sensor whose focal aperture f / 1.8 is the same on the two phones. This is complemented by two 8 and 2 megapixel sensors with wide-angle and "depth" lenses in the case of the Mi A3 and a Samsung S5K5E8 5 megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens in the case of the Redmi Note 7.

In photographs where the use of complementary sensors is not required, the quality in both cases should be similar, unless we resort to manual adjustments. It is precisely in the rest of the sensors where we find the greatest difference. The 118º wide-angle sensor, for example, gives us a greater field of vision when capturing landscapes or large scenes.

As for the sensor that Xiaomi calls "depth", its functions are limited to use in portrait mode photographs, like the telephoto sensor that we can find in the Note 7. The latter, by the way, should give us better results, have higher resolution and aperture, although this depends largely on the processing of the Camera application.

Moving to the front, the differences are clear, with a significant superiority in the case of the Xiaomi Mi A3, with a sensor of no less than 32 megapixels and f / 2.0 aperture. The Redmi Note 7, on the other hand, consists of a 13 megapixel sensor and f / 2.0 focal aperture, a sensor, in short, less bright and with lower quality than that of the Mi A3.

Connectivity and autonomy

The implementation of a processor of the same series makes the differences in connectivity, and to a lesser extent, in autonomy, almost non-existent.

Both terminals have FM radio, Bluetooth 5.0, dual band WiFi and GLONNAS GPS, and both have the same 18 W fast charging system based on the Quick Charge 3.0 standard. Unfortunately, Xiaomi does not include a fast charging charger together with either of the two smartphones, which is why we will have to resort to third-party solutions.

As far as the battery is concerned, while the Mi A3 has a 4,030 mAh module, the Redmi Note 7 uses a 4,000 mAh one. Despite their similarities, the implementation of an OLED panel with a lower resolution and size and a more efficient a priori processor should give us a slightly higher autonomy in the case of the Xiaomi Mi A3.

Conclusions

After seeing the main differences between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 vs Xiaomi Mi A3, it is time to draw conclusions, which largely depend on the price. A price that today starts at 150 euros in the 3 and 32 GB version of the Redmi Note 7 and 249 euros in the 4 and 64 GB version of the Mi A3. Is it worth spending almost 60% more for the Mi A3? The answer is clear: no.

Roughly, we find two almost identical phones, at least in terms of cameras, design and technical characteristics. The only significant difference between the Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is found in the incorporation of a third camera sensor and the implementation of a UFS 2.1 type memory and an OLED panel, which is clearly below the LCD panel. Redmi IPS.

This, added to aspects such as the fingerprint sensor on the screen or the price, makes the balance opt for the side of the Redmi Note 7, a model that roughly, and from our point of view, is above the Mi A3.
