Design and display
One of the most important changes that we see between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and the Mi A2 is found in the design. The Redmi Note 7 is much newer, so its design is more current. It has a 6.3-inch screen with a FHD + resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and a 19.5: 9 format. The front camera is drop-shaped to make the most of the panel. Of course, we have a fairly wide black lower frame.
The rear case is made of glass, with the camera located in the upper left corner. This is placed in a vertical position, with the fingerprint reader in the central area.
The full dimensions of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 are 159.2 x 75.2 x 8.1 millimeters, with a weight of 186 grams. It is available in three colors: black, blue and red.
The Xiaomi Mi A2 offers a very similar design to its predecessor. That is, we have a metal body with rounded edges to facilitate grip. The fingerprint reader is located at the rear, right in the center. The camera is placed at the top left and protrudes quite a bit from the body of the terminal.
Ahead there is a reduction of frames compared to the Mi A1. However, in the middle of 2019 we already see this design as a bit "old", since now all screen designs are carried. The screen is 5.99 inches and offers an FHD + resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels.
The complete dimensions of the terminal are 158.7 x 75.4 x 7.3 millimeters, with a weight of 168 grams. It is available in blue, black, gold, and pink on some models.
Photographic set
In the photographic section we have two very different proposals. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has a double rear camera, in which its main 48-megapixel sensor stands out. This is accompanied by a second 5 megapixel sensor that controls depth. Also, the main sensor uses 1.6μm pixels and offers an f / 1.8 aperture.
Along with these two sensors, the Redmi Note 7 has a PDAF phase detection focus system, AI system with scene detection and video recording with 1080p resolution at 60fps.
As for the front camera, it is equipped with a 13 megapixel sensor. It has a Portrait mode that is achieved through the AI system. A system that also applies to the Beauty mode, so common in mobile phones from Chinese manufacturers.
The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a Sony IMX486 main sensor with 12 megapixels of resolution, aperture of f / 1.75 and pixels of 1.25 μm. It is accompanied by a second Sony IMX376 sensor with a resolution of 20 megapixels, aperture of f / 1.75, pixels of 2.0 μm and 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology.
The main camera is capable of recording 4K video at 30 fps. And, how could it be otherwise, it is equipped with an AI system that recognizes the scenes and configures the camera to get the best possible photograph.
It also has a powerful front camera. This uses a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. It also has 4-in-1 Super-pixel technology based on pixel binning technology, achieving 2.0 μm pixels.
Processor and memory
When we look under the hood of these two terminals the forces become quite equal. Both models are equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 processor. However, in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 we can choose between a version with 3 GB of RAM or one with 4 GB of RAM.
This amount of memory is different on the Xiaomi Mi A2, with 4 GB of RAM in the most basic version and 6 GB of RAM in the highest version.
In terms of storage, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 can have 32 or 64 GB of internal storage memory. Its rival, however, can be purchased with 32, 64 or even 128 GB of internal storage. Both can be expanded via microSD card.
Autonomy and connectivity
If you have looked at the design section, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is much heavier than its rival. This is due to the capacity of its battery, which amounts to 4,000 milliamps. In our in-depth test of the device we were able to verify that autonomy is one of the strengths of this device. Exceeds 24 hours with intensive use.
In addition, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has an 18W fast charging system. It's not the fastest on the market, but at least it will take less time with a standard charging system.
His rival in this comparison is not so effective in this section. The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a 3,000 mAh battery. It is a fairly standard figure in a mobile of its characteristics and gives us a correct autonomy, but not excellent. Luckily it also has a fast charging system.
And, taking into account that they are terminals that have not been on the market for a long time, both have the latest in connectivity: 4G LTE, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C connector.
Conclusions and price
We reached the end of the comparison and we must draw conclusions. And the truth is that it is not easy at all to decide for one terminal or another. In terms of design, in our opinion the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 would be ahead of the Mi A2. On the one hand, because it has a screen with much smaller frames. And, on the other hand, because the glass back achieves a more premium finish.
As for the screen, it depends on the taste of each user. Personally I prefer the 6.3 inches of the Redmi Note 7, but I understand that there will be users who will prefer a more compact mobile. However, the absence of frames makes the difference in size between one and the other practically negligible. So, new minipoint for the Redmi.
And if we talk about photography, we have two very different proposals. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has a high resolution sensor. However, we believe that the rear cameras of the Mi A2 are a bit ahead of the latest Xiaomi terminal. Also the front, with higher resolution and larger pixels.
In terms of brute force, both models have the same processor. However, as we have seen, the Xiomi Mi A2 has more RAM, both in the base model and in the maximum that we can choose. So, new minipoint for the Xiaomi Mi A2.
We go to the battery section to, as we have already dropped, give another minipoint to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. Why? Because it has a 4,000 milliamp battery compared to the 3,010 milliamp of the Mi A2. The difference is clear and it shows in the real autonomy.
So, if we have not counted badly, we come to the price section with a 3-2 in the marked in favor of the Redmi. Which one will win the mini price point? Let's see it. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is for sale with a price that starts from 150 euros for the model with 3 GB + 32 GB. If we opt for the model with 4 GB + 64 GB, more interesting, we go up to 200 euros.
For its part, the Xiaomi Mi A2 starts from 250 euros with 4 GB + 32 GB. However, the model with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB can be had for 270 euros. Although the difference is not much, minipoint for the Redmi Note 7. So, ladies and gentlemen, we already have a winner.
