Today we are going to compare two of the latest terminals that have reached the market of the so-called premium mid-range. Two mobiles that, without being at the level of the top-of-the-range models in price, can compete with them in characteristics. On the one hand we have the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, a striking terminal with an all-screen front and a lot of power under the hood. On the other hand we have the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018, a more discreet mobile but that inherits many features from the S8.
Although their price is the same, these two terminals offer very different proposals. We are going to compare the spectacularity and the Chinese power with the Korean effectiveness. Today we put the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 and the Samsung Galaxy A8 face to face. Which one will win the hearts of users?

Design
As we mentioned, these two terminals offer very different proposals. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is a different mobile, recognizable as soon as you see it. It has a ceramic back, with a lot of shine and with the Xiaomi logo well highlighted.
At the rear there is also the fingerprint reader, located in the center. Just above we have the camera, which protrudes slightly from the case. To delimit it, it is adorned with an 18-karat gold trim.
The sides are made of aerospace aluminum alloy, while most of the front is for the display. Maybe even too much of the front, since this has forced to place the front camera in a very uncomfortable place. We have it located in the lower right, in a corner. As you can imagine, it is not comfortable at all.
The corners of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 are slightly rounded, something that is appreciated when grasping it. The dimensions of the terminal are 151.8 x 75.5 x 7.7 millimeters, with a significant weight of 185 grams.
On the other side of the ring we have the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018, which is committed to glass and metal. But one of its most notable points is the IP68 certification, which makes the terminal resistant to water and dust.
Like its rival, the A8 places the fingerprint reader at the rear. It is located under the camera, which is better integrated into the housing than that of the Xiaomi terminal.
For the front, the company has opted for a design similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S8, although less spectacular. We have two frames, one upper and one lower, reduced, although not invisible. In the upper part we have the front camera located, while in the lower one there is nothing. The buttons are on the screen.
The edges of the rear of the Samsung Galaxy A8 are rounded, as usual. The complete dimensions of the terminal are 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 millimeters, with a weight of 172 grams. As you can see, it is lighter than its rival, but much thicker.
screen
We go on to talk about the screen, without a doubt the great protagonist in both terminals. But more in the Xiaomi team, since it is practically the only thing we see when we have the terminal in front of us.
Xiaomi introduced the infinity screen with the Xiaomi Mi MIX in 2016. In its successor we all expected a hit on the table at the resolution level, but this did not occur. Which does not mean that the screen of this terminal is bad. It equips a 5.99-inch panel with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. In addition, the screen offers remarkable brightness and 1,500: 1 contrast.
The screen of the Samsung Galaxy A8 is much smaller, although the resolution is very similar. We are talking about a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2,220 x 1,080 pixels.
Also inherited from the high-end comes the Always On Display function. Samsung began to distribute it to all its terminals since its arrival with the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the A8 was not going to be less. Thanks to this function we can see the date, time and some notifications without having to unlock the terminal.
Main chamber
And before going to look under the hood of these two terminals, let's take a look at their photographic section. In which, all is said, we have several surprises.
The first is found in the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, which does not equip a double camera on its back. Instead, go for a single main lens signed by Sony and with 12 megapixel resolution. In addition, it has an f / 2.0 aperture, uses 1.25 μm pixels and includes phase detection autofocus and four-axis automatic stabilizer.
In our in-depth test of the terminal we could see that, in general, the performance of the camera is quite high. The results in low light conditions are decent, without reaching the level of the top terminal like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. But it has done a good job in scenes with downlight, such as sunsets or backlighting.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 also bets on a single sensor. In this case we find a 16 megapixel sensor with a focus aperture of 1.7.
The result is pretty decent photos in dark environments. It is not the best camera on the market, but it performs quite well in this price range. Photos in broad daylight are highly detailed and vibrant in color. Its biggest but is not being able to record video in 4K quality. Something that, on the other hand, its rival does in this comparison.
Frontal camera
When it comes to taking selfies, we are going to find an important difference between these two terminals. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 equips a 5 megapixel front camera. It has a Beauty mode with 36 smart beauty profiles and features like facial recognition.
But the worst thing about this camera, as we advanced, is its location. It is located in the lower right corner of the mobile, just where the hand is usually placed when grabbing the terminal. So it is not uncommon for us to find our palm covering part of the photo, something that gets worse when we want to record video.
At Samsung, however, they have put a lot of care in the front camera of the A8. We have a 16 and an 8 megapixel sensor. Both have aperture f / 1.9, which offers us good brightness even if the lighting is not the best. The use of a double sensor also allows to achieve the famous bokeh effect.
Also, Samsung has included the dynamic focus feature. This allows us to focus and blur to our liking, both before and after taking the picture.
There is no lack of the usual stickers to play with the photographs. Using augmented reality, we can apply masks that follow our gestures.
Processor and memory
Just as in the photographic section we could say that Xiaomi has not been too ambitious, we cannot say the same in the technical set. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 equips a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. One of the most powerful chips on the market, with four cores at 2.5 GHz and the remaining four at 1.9 GHz.
This chip is combined with a 6 GB RAM. There is also a special version of the mobile with no less than 8 GB of RAM. The results in the most common power tests leave no doubt that we are facing a very powerful mobile. Its score is very similar to the LG V30, which opts for the same processor.
When it comes to storage, we have several options. The most basic version has 64 GB. But there are versions with more capacity, 128 GB and even 256 GB. The latter is not available in Spain, at least for now. By the way, the memory is not expandable.
Your rival cannot compete in this section. The Samsung Galaxy A8 has an Exynos 7885 processor, an eight-core processor with ARM Cortex-A53 architecture and 64 bit that is effective and efficient, but without being the most powerful on the market. Four of its cores run at 2.2 GHz and the other four at 1.7 GHz.
The processor is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using microSD cards of up to 256 GB.
If we compare them in the most common tests, we can tell you that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 got 172,973 points in AnTuTu compared to the 84,383 points of the Galaxy A8.
Autonomy and connectivity
We now turn to one of the most delicate sections of a smartphone. Although, honestly, lately it seems that manufacturers "are content" with getting to the end of the day.
We are obviously talking about autonomy. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has a 3,400 milliamp battery. In our analysis it lasted about a day and a third or a day and a half without the need to recharge.
In addition, it incorporates a Qualcomm 3.0 fast charging system. And to make the most of it, we have a Type C USB port. It also incorporates 4G connectivity, WiFi AC and the latest Bluetooth 5.0 protocol, which allows us to synchronize several devices at the same time.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 has a 3,000 milliamp battery. Under normal use, which integrates more or less constant messaging, occasional games and applications that use GPS, it lasts all day. Of course, compared to its little brother, the Samsung Galaxy A5, we noticed a drop in performance.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A8 also has fast charging. This is capable of recharging approximately 40 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes.
Regarding connectivity, we have a USB-C, 4G, WiFi AC and Bluetooth 5.0 port. That is, we can be sure that we will be up to date.
Conclusions
After comparing these two terminals point by point, it is clear that we are facing two very interesting devices. As we usually say, the design section is very personal. To us we love the design of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, much more original (leaving aside the solution adopted in the front chamber).
As for the photographic section, we would say that the Samsung Galaxy A8 is ahead of the Xiaomi terminal. Both in the rear camera and, especially, in the front, the Korean terminal offers a quality bonus.
However, in power it is clear that the winner is the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. We have a more powerful processor, more RAM and more storage memory.
We would also give a tie in the autonomy and connectivity sections. In the latter it is clear, since both teams have the same characteristics. And in autonomy, we think that both can reach the same figure.
We only need to talk about the price. And, as we anticipated before, it will not be decisive. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has an official price of 500 euros, the same price as the Samsung Galaxy A8.
