DESIGN
The Xiaomi Mi 8, like the Huawei P20 Pro, hit the market completely breaking the design of its predecessors. Both companies have known how to adapt their new flagships to what the market demands in 2018.
Let 's face it, the design of the Mi 8 copy shamelessly to that of the iPhone X Apple. Which is actually a good thing, because for most it's a great design.
We have a glass rear, with 7 series high performance aluminum frames. The edges of the back are slightly curved to facilitate the grip of the device. In the central area of the back we have the fingerprint reader. The camera is positioned vertically, in the left corner.
The full dimensions of the Xiaomi Mi 8 are 154.9 x 74.8 x 7.6 millimeters, with a weight of 175 grams. It will be available in four colors: black, white, gold and blue.
The Huawei P20 Pro is very similar in design. Its back is also made of shiny glass and its metal frames. In this case we have a slightly cleaner rear, since the fingerprint reader is placed in the front.
The triple camera is located in the upper left corner, in a vertical position. We have two sensors surrounded by an oval frame and slightly raised from the case. The third is separated from the rest, just below, and protrudes a little less.
The full dimensions of the Huawei P20 Pro are 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 millimeters, with a weight of 185 grams. In other words, it is practically as tall, a little narrower and slightly thicker than its rival. Yes there is a little more difference in the price, with 10 grams more. Something that, most likely, is due to the battery, as we will see later.
screen
If the design of these two terminals is very similar, something similar happens with the screen. The Xiaomi Mi 8 equips a Super AMOLED panel manufactured by Samsung. It has a size of 6.21 inches and a resolution of 2,248 x 1,080 pixels.
We also know that, thanks to OLED technology, the screen achieves a contrast of 60,000: 1. In addition, it has a maximum brightness of 600 nits, the same data that its predecessor offered.
The Huawei P20 Pro equips a panel with OLED technology and a size of 6.1 inches. This offers a resolution of 2,240 x 1,080 pixels and an 18.7: 9 format.
Huawei is not very given to giving many technical data about the screens used in its terminals, so we do not have more information. Yes, I can tell you that I have tested the Huawei P20 Pro and the screen has a lot of image quality and a level of brightness to match.
Cameras and multimedia
The photographic section is key if you want to compete face to face with high-end mobiles. In Xiaomi they know it and that is why they gave so much importance to the Xiaomi Mi 8 camera in its presentation.
We have not yet been able to test it thoroughly, so we have no real benchmarks of its performance. But we can review its technical section.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is equipped with two 12-megapixel sensors, one with aperture f / 1.8 and the other with aperture f / 2.4. The main sensor features 4-axis optical stabilization. The camera is capable of recording 4K resolution video at 30fps.
As for the front camera, it equips a 20 megapixel sensor. It also features 1.8 μm (4-in-1) large pixel technology.
But, beyond the technical section, Xiaomi placed a lot of emphasis on the artificial intelligence that assists the cameras of the Mi 8. This is capable of recognizing up to 206 types of scenes and applying the ideal configuration parameters. The Portrait Mode is also very prominent, with up to 7 types of lighting effects applied by AI.
We have talked at length about the Huawei P20 Pro camera. It is composed of 3 sensors, with a combination of RGB sensor + monochrome sensor + telephoto lens. The former reaches a resolution of 40 megapixels and has an aperture of f / 1.8.
On the other hand, the monochrome sensor offers a resolution of 20 megapixels and an aperture f / 1.6. The combination of both achieves more detailed photos and a 2x zoom.
The third in question is a telephoto lens with a resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture f / 2.4. Its function is to offer an equivalent focal length of 80 mm, with a 5x zoom.
As for the front camera, it has a resolution of 24 megapixels with f / 2.0 aperture. And, as you can imagine, it is also equipped with artificial intelligence to improve photographs.
Processor and memory
Inside the Xiaomi Mi 8 we have a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. This is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and three versions of internal storage: 64, 128 and 256 GB.
According to the manufacturer, the Xiaomi Mi 8 achieves an AnTuTu score that exceeds 300,000 points. Something that, on the other hand, we will have to check ourselves. If so, it would be one of the most powerful terminals on the market.
The Huawei P20 Pro has a Kirin 970 processor made by Huawei. This chip was released with the Huawei Mate 10 and is still the most powerful of the company. We assume that until the Mate 11 comes out.
It is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. And this time it is key to choose the storage capacity well, since neither of them offers the possibility of expanding via microSD card.
Autonomy and connectivity
At the moment the Xiaomi Mi 8 is holding up very well the comparison with the P20 Pro, at least on paper. But how about its autonomy? Well, possibly, it is its weakest point.
It is equipped with a 3,400 milliamp battery. It is a capacity that is within the average of high-end mobiles. But we must take into account the large size of the screen, the power of the processor and the AI system of the cameras. However, until we test it thoroughly, we should not draw conclusions.
Of course, the Xiaomi Mi 8 has a quick charge Quick Charge 4+.
In our in-depth test the Huawei P20 Pro proved to have a great autonomy. At least above the average for high-end terminals this year.
It has a 4,000 milliamp battery, which is noticeable when using the mobile in a real environment. This allows us to get through the whole day without problems, even if we give the device intense use.
In addition, it is equipped with a Huawei fast charging system. This allows us to charge 50% of the battery in one hour.
In terms of connectivity, both terminals are equipped with WiFi 802.11ac, NFC and USB Type-C connector. But the Mi 8 stands out for including a dual-band GPS and Bluetooth 5.0.
Conclusions and price
We reached the end and we must draw conclusions. Although it is difficult without having thoroughly tested the Xiaomi terminal.
As we always say, in design each user will have their personal tastes. Both have a glass body and a notch on the front, in addition to the cameras located in the same position. It is the small details that will make us decide on one or the other, such as the location of the fingerprint reader.
On screen we could also have a draw. Both offer a panel with OLED technology and with similar resolutions. Of course, the screen of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is slightly larger.
As for the photographic section, we cannot decide without trying the Mi 8 camera. On paper the triple sensor of the Huawei P20 Pro should be superior, but the Xiaomi terminal will have to be thoroughly tested.
If we talk about brute force, it seems that the Xiaomi Mi 8 is superior to the Huawei terminal. At least that's what Xiaomi herself said in her presentation. We do not know if it will really exceed 300,000 points in AnTuTu, but we can tell you that the Snapdragon 845 is one of the most powerful processors on the market. We already saw it in the LG G7 review.
In autonomy, however, we think that the Huawei P20 Pro will be ahead of the Xiaomi terminal. Those 600 milliamps too many have to be noticed.
We ended up talking about the price. The cost of the Xiaomi Mi 8 in Europe has not yet been revealed, but in China it will be launched with a price starting at 360 euros at the change. If we are based on the price of its predecessor, the Mi 8 may cost around 450 euros in Spain.
Its rival in this comparison is considerably more expensive. The Huawei P20 Pro has an official price of 900 euros. Although looking well you can already get something cheaper, it is still far from reaching the price of Xiaomi. We are looking forward to testing the new terminal of the Chinese manufacturer to see if in photography it can compete with the almighty P20 Pro. What do you think?
