The recent presentation of Sony's new mid-range, the Xperia XA2, has captured our interest due to some features it introduces, such as the 23 megapixel camera with 4K recording or the Snapdragon 630 processor in its guts. In addition, it will go on sale with a competitive price of 350 euros.
In order to have some perspective, we are going to compare this new launch with another device that competes in a similar price range, the Huawei P10 Lite. We will analyze the main specifications of both terminals.
Layout and display: frames, frames and more frames
On the aesthetic side, it is striking that the new generation of Sony's Xperia XA range does not bet on the new trend of approaching screens without frames. Quite the contrary, the Sony Xperia XA2 maintains the traditional line with pointed shapes and really large frames (or is it a perception distorted by new fashions?).
A novelty is the inclusion of a necessary fingerprint sensor on the rear, something that does not affect the matte aluminum finish in the least, with several colors to choose from: blue, gold, silver and black. As for the screen, they are 5.2 inches with Full HD resolution in a terminal with 72 millimeters wide and 142 millimeters high.
The Huawei P10 Lite, for its part, also maintains a 5.2-inch screen with Full HD resolution. The width of the terminal is 72 millimeters and its height is 146.5 millimeters, so we are facing even larger frames. In its defense (for which it seems like a negative), we will say that this phone was launched in February 2017, before the infinite screen fever broke out with the Galaxy S8.
The chosen material is also aluminum, with a design where the edges are more rounded, and with the fingerprint reader also on the back. It offers a wide variety of colors to choose from: black, blue, white and gold.

Camera: pixel battle
For the photographic section, Sony has repeated the same equipment as its XA1, with a 23-megapixel main camera with f / 2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel front camera, also with f / 2.0 aperture. It is in the software where we find some novelties, such as the possibility of recording video in 4K or recording movement in slow motion at 120 fps.
The Huawei P10 Lite bets on a more humble photographic set, with a 12-megapixel rear lens and f / 2.2 aperture, and an 8-megapixel front lens with f / 2.0. Still, it seems that Sony in this case is one step ahead of Huawei.
Hardware and software
The Sony Xperia XA2 leaves Mediatek and bets on Qualcomm this time, with a Snapdragon 630 processor and 3 GB of RAM. As for storage, we have 32 GB expandable via microSD card. As for the software, it is a joy to discover that it has opted directly for Android 8 Oreo, a real point in its favor for this mid-range.
The Huawei P10 Lite has not experimented, it continues to use its own HiSilicon processors, in this case the eight-core Kirin 658 model, with 4 GB of RAM. For the operating system, it had Android 7 Nougat and its EMUI 5.1 customization layer, although in September 2017 the update to Android 8 Oreo was announced. This is why Huawei's model seems to resist Sony's and at least matches its performance.
Autonomy and connections
For a 5.2-inch screen and Full HD resolution, a 3,300 mAh battery fulfills the task of offering an autonomy that exceeds the day. In addition, by including fast charging, we will have more mobility even when we can only opt for short charges at specific times.
The USB-C is a point in favor of this terminal, it is nice to see it in mid-range models. It is also good news to find the minijack, forgetting about risky bets on high-end equipment, and NFC, thus being able to access contactless payment services. But the best news of all is the inclusion of Bluetooth 5. With the use that we give to this technology today, having its latest version, with the improvements in speed and stability that it offers, is a luxury.
Huawei, in its P10 Lite, offers us a 3000 mAh battery, and fast charging. As it is also a 5.2-inch terminal with Full HD resolution, we assume a similar autonomy to that of the Sony Xperia XA2. Of course, the Huawei phone does not have USB-C, but microUSB, which will affect the speed of charging and data transmission with the PC. As for the connections, it includes NFC, but its Bluetooth stays at 4.2. For this reason, we believe that Sony once again takes the medal in this section.
Price and conclusions
The Sony Xperia XA2 has the virtue of time, and is that having been launched a year later allows you to access aspects that at the time were outside the mid-range. The USB-C or Bluetooth 5 port are some examples.
The camera is also a point where Sony surpasses Huawei, both for the resolution of the rear lens and for the software that allows recording video in 4K and slow motion. On the performance side, however, there is greater equality. Sony has a newer chip, but Huawei has superior RAM, as well as being updated to Android 8.
The Sony Xperia XA2 will go on sale for 350 euros, the same price that the Huawei P10 Lite originally had, but a year later it can already be found for 100 euros less. This becomes the main advantage of the Huawei phone. In that case, time is in your favor.
