Are you looking for a high-end mobile but can't decide? At tuexperto.com we want to help you. Therefore, every week we make some comparisons between the most interesting mobiles on the market. This week we are going to put two very interesting high-end terminals face to face. On one side of the ring we have the Samsung Galaxy S9, one of the most desired mobiles. On the other side, the Sony Xperia XZ2, Sony's first mobile that slightly breaks with the design style of the Japanese company.
Both devices are located at the top of Android terminals. Although they are tremendously different from each other, they also have some similarities. For example, both have opted to keep the camera simple. But can the latest device from the Japanese manufacturer stand up to the almighty Samsung terminal? Let's check it out with this comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Sony Xperia XZ2.

Design
The high-end mobiles of 2018 follow quite marked design guidelines. Glass is the material par excellence and the reduction of front frames almost an obligation. Both the Samsung terminal and the Xperia XZ2 offer both features, although each in its own way.
At Samsung they decided not to touch the design much this year. The Samsung Galaxy S9 maintains a glass back, with rounded edges. Yes , the location of the fingerprint reader was changed, placing it in the central area, just below the camera sensor.
The front part also maintains the design seen in its predecessors. That is, we have a very narrow upper and lower frame. In addition, the S9 remains resistant to water and dust, thanks to its IP68 certification.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 are 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 millimeters, with a weight of 163 grams. It is available in black, blue and purple.
Sony has put aside some of its traditional hallmarks to launch a terminal more adapted to what "takes away" in 2018. Even so, they maintain their essence. The Sony Xperia XZ2 also features a glass back with curved edges and metal frames. The rear sags to be thicker in the center and thinner at the ends.
The fingerprint reader has been moved to the rear, losing its characteristic location on the side of the terminal. This has been placed under the camera, in an excessively low position. Yes, the camera's shutter button is kept, another of the hallmarks of Sony mobiles.
At the front we finally have a screen with reduced frames. Don't expect a drastic reduction, but at least Sony exceeds 80% screen utilization. Of course, the lower frame still serves no purpose other than supporting the finger.
The full dimensions of the Sony Xperia XZ2 are 153 × 72 × 11.1 millimeters. That is, it is a fairly thick terminal. In addition, it has a weight of no less than 197 grams. It is available in black, silver, green and pink.
screen
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED panel with a QuadHD resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels and an 18.5: 9 format. As usual, it is a screen with curved edges.
In addition, it includes the Always On Display function, to be able to see the time and notifications without turning on the terminal screen.
At Sony they still do not go to OLED technology. The Sony Xperia XZ2 has a 5.7-inch IPS panel with a FullHD + resolution of 1,080 × 2,160 pixels and an 18: 9 ratio.
It is a panel with TRILUMINOS technology, capable of reproducing HDR images. It also has a curious dynamic vibration system to enhance the experience of watching a movie or listening to music. In addition, it offers several color and contrast options, very common in the manufacturer's terminals.
Cameras
It is curious, but in the year of the double camera both manufacturers maintain their bet on the single camera. Which does not mean that they are exempt from news in the photographic section.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a 12-megapixel main camera with autofocus and dual aperture. This allows an aperture of 2.4 to be applied in bright environments, or 1.5 if there is no light. The terminal decides which opening to apply based on the conditions.
It also includes multiframe noise reduction technology, which consists of taking up to 12 images at a time to identify and eliminate noise or imperfections from the capture. The result is sharper photos with a higher quality feel.
It also includes two important software developments. The first is the ability to record videos at 960 fps with HD resolution. The second are the AR Emojis, with which we can create an avatar that moves the face like us.
On the front we have an 8 megapixel sensor with autofocus system and 1.7 aperture.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 equips a new Motion Eye camera. It is composed of a 19 megapixel sensor, with 1.22 µm pixels and f / 2.0 aperture. This achieves a maximum ISO of 12800 in photography, in addition to having predictive hybrid autofocus.
As for video, the Xperia XZ2's camera is capable of recording in 4K resolution and HDR. In addition, it has the super slow motion camera function at 960 fps and 1080p resolution.
And if we focus on selfies, we have a front camera with a 5 megapixel sensor. This has a 23-millimeter wide-angle lens and f / 2.2 aperture. It is equipped with 5-axis stabilization and offers a maximum ISO of 1600.
Processor and memory
As you can imagine, both terminals have plenty of power. They form the high end of each of the manufacturers, so with both we can run any application smoothly.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is equipped with the Exynos 9810 processor. It is a chip manufactured in 10 nanometers and with eight cores (four running at 2.7 GHz and another four at 1.7 GHz).
Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This capacity can be expanded using a microSD card up to 400 GB.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 features Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor. It is also a chip manufactured in 10 nanometers and with eight cores.
Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 400 GB.
Autonomy and connectivity
We arrive at the section, perhaps, less striking of the mobile terminals; but one of the most important. This is none other than the battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a 3,000 milliamp battery. Although it is enough to get the full day of autonomy, it remains quite fair.
To compensate, the S9 has a fast charging system and also wireless charging.
The Sony terminal has a slightly higher capacity. The XZ2 equips a 3,180 milliamp battery, which lasts the whole day as long as we don't use it very intensively.
Of course, we have the great Sony STAMINA mode. Also with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging and wireless charging.
In terms of connectivity, both terminals are equipped with the latest. They both have NFC, USB-C, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and very fast 4G LTE.
Conclusions and price
Now is the time to draw conclusions. At the design level, we know that Sony has a huge following. The Xperia XZ2 maintains the essence of the Japanese manufacturer's terminals, but improves in some aspects. However, it still has things to improve.
Although it is a pretty nice terminal, it is thick and heavy. In addition, the front part could be much better used. Therefore, we think that the design section continues to win the Samsung Galaxy S9. However, everything will depend on the taste of each user.
As for the screen, the Super AMOLED panel of the Samsung terminal is still one of the best on the market. Sony has always had good screens, but we think it is one step behind.
To draw conclusions at the photographic level we will have to wait for our in-depth analysis of the Sony Xperia XZ2. We must bear in mind that the Samsung Galaxy S9 camera is considered one of the best, so we see it difficult for Sony to surpass it.
We have no complaints at the performance level with either of the two terminals. In fact, the XZ2 processor is likely to outperform the Exynos that equips the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the tests. On a practical level, both offer power to spare.
And in terms of autonomy, both terminals meet the full day if we do not make intensive use. So we could close this section with a draw, since both terminals have fast and wireless charging.
We finish with the price. The Samsung Galaxy S9 hit the market with an official price of 850 euros. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ2 has arrived with an official price of 800 euros. However, both terminals can be found for much less if we search well. So, price will not be a determining factor in our decision. That said, which one do you prefer?
