Design
The first thing to keep in mind is that we are facing two top terminals. That is, we are comparing the best on the market. So, we could decide on either one and we would be right.
Samsung has decided to keep the same design that we saw in the S8 in its new model. So we have a shiny glass back with metal frames. The fingerprint reader is still located at the rear, but this time below the camera.
Back of the Samsung Galaxy S9
The front is still governed by the screen. This curves at the sides and has minimal frames. The set, like its predecessor, is waterproof and dustproof with IP68 certification.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 are 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 millimeters, with a weight of 163 grams. It is available in three colors: black, blue and a very interesting new purple color.
The LG V30 also enters the eye from the first moment. Its back is made of glass, with slightly curved edges that facilitate grip. Precisely in the back we have the dual camera system and the fingerprint reader. Both are surrounded with a kind of frame to delimit them.
Back of the LG V30
The front is very similar to that of its rival, with the screen less curved. However, it does make a slight curvature to give the feel of a screen without frames. As for the upper and lower edges, they exist but they are very narrow.
Despite being built in glass, the LG V30 is also IP68 certified. In fact, the terminal has passed the MIL-STD-810 military test.
The full dimensions of the LG V30 stand at 151.7 x 75.4 x 7.3 millimeters, with a weight of 158 grams. That is, despite having a larger screen, it is lighter than its rival. It is available in a greenish blue and silver color.
screen
Samsung Galaxy S9 screen
As we already know, the new frameless designs allow you to have a large screen on almost any mobile. In this case, both models offer high-quality screens.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED panel. It offers a Quad HD resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels and an 18.5: 9 aspect ratio. The Always on Display function has also been preserved, which provides us with information without having to unlock the mobile.
LG V30 screen
But don't think that the LG V30 falls short. It has an OLED panel of six inches with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 pixels. OLED technology makes the terminal achieve pure blacks and very vivid colors. The format is 18: 9, the usual today. Also, it supports HDR10. And it also offers the Always On Display feature.
Cameras
We now go to the photographic section, perhaps one of the most important when talking about a high-end terminal. As you can imagine, both have a first-rate camera. However, we have two very different ways of understanding mobile photography.
At Samsung they have decided to keep the camera simple on the Samsung Galaxy S9. The double camera has been left for the larger model, the S9 +. Which does not mean that the camera of the S9 does not include news.
Samsung Galaxy S9 main camera
We have a 12 megapixel main camera with autofocus and dual aperture. The latter means that the terminal is capable of switching between an aperture f / 2.4 and f / 1.5. The first will be used for bright environments, while the second will be used in unfavorable light conditions.
In this way, the camera will adapt to any situation. In turn, the device has multiframe noise reduction technology. Thanks to it we can take up to 12 photos at a time to later eliminate noise or any type of imperfection that we see. The result is much more perfect and sharper photographs.
Front camera of the Samsung Galaxy S9
On the front, the Samsung Galaxy S9 equips an 8 megapixel sensor. This offers an aperture f / 1.7 and autofocus system.
But, leaving aside the technical section, the Samsung terminal offers quite striking new functions. For example, the ability to record video in super slow motion (960 fps with HD resolution). Also the well-known AR Emojis, which allow detecting up to 100 points on the user's face and translating their expressions into an animated emoji.
LG V30 main camera
The LG V30 does bet on the dual camera system. The first sensor has a resolution of 16 megapixels and an impressive aperture f / 1.6. Meanwhile, the second sensor includes a wide-angle type lens, capable of capturing 120 degrees of the scene. This second sensor offers an aperture f / 1.9
It also includes optical image stabilizer, LED flash and laser focus. In addition, the LG V30 has some special functions, such as the Cinema Mode or the Point Zoom function.
LG V30 Cinema Mode
As for the camera for selfies, in this case we have a 5 megapixel lens with an aperture of f / 2.2 and a greater width of 100 degrees. Their results in our in-depth analysis were correct, although a little more brightness would have been useful.
Processor and memory
As you can imagine, neither of the two terminals will have any problem to move any application excessively.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an Exynos 9810 processor
The Samsung Galaxy S9 hides inside an Exynos 9810 processor. It is a chip with eight process cores manufactured in 10 nanometers. It is accompanied by a 4 GB RAM memory.
On the other hand, it also offers a storage capacity of 64 GB in its standard version, although a few days ago we learned that Samsung will launch a version of the S9 with 256 GB internal. However, any of them can be expanded by using microSD cards up to 400GB.
The LG V30 equips a Snapdragon 835 processor
At LG, however, they have opted for a Qualcomm processor. Specifically, it is a Snapdragon 835, a chip with eight cores at a speed of 2.45 GHz. Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. To expand this capacity we can use a microSD card of up to 2 TB.
Sound
We do not usually do it, but these two terminals deserve a section dedicated to sound. And it is that both companies have focused their efforts on offering a round device in all aspects.
Dolby Atmos sound on the Galaxy S9
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips speakers manufactured in collaboration with AKG. To this we have to add Dolby Atmos technology, which offers surround sound. According to the company, the S9 offers 1.4 times more powerful sound than the previous model.
The LG V30 incorporates a Quad DAC for HiFi sound
As for its rival, the LG V30 has a Hi-Fi Quad DAC system. But the best thing is that it not only includes it for playback, but also for recording. The terminal includes a high-quality microphone and a series of digital filters and settings for almost professional audio recording. All this accompanied by headphones signed by the prestigious Bang & Olufsen.
Autonomy and connectivity
Autonomy remains the pending task of most high-end terminals. While it is true that almost everyone is able to endure the full day, if we use very intensively we can get scared.
Samsung Galaxy S9 USB-C connector
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a 3,000 mAh battery. It also offers both fast charging and wireless charging. At the moment we have not had the opportunity to test the terminal thoroughly, but if we rely on its predecessor, the autonomy should reach the full day without problems.
Its rival in this comparison equips a larger battery. Specifically, they are 3,300 mAh. It also incorporates Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging system. This allows us to charge half the battery in just 30 minutes, and the entire charge in just under two hours. Rest assured, LG has not forgotten about wireless charging.
The LG V30 battery lasts a whole day without problems
The LG V30 we have had the opportunity to test it thoroughly. Its battery has endured us the whole day without problems. For those who love numbers, in AnTuTu he got a score of 12,829 points.
In terms of connectivity, both terminals offer the latest in the market. Both have 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB-C connector, among others.
Conclusions and price
We have reached the end and it is time to draw conclusions. As we always say, design is something very personal to each user. Although it is true that this time we have two very similar terminals before us. So we leave it to your choice.
Conclusions and price Samsung Galaxy S9
Something similar happens with the screen. We have two high quality panels, with the latest technology and large in size. Again, there is not much difference beyond small details.
In the photographic section we have doubts. At the moment we have not been able to thoroughly test the performance of the S9's camera. However, extras such as super slow motion or AR Emoji could make us opt for the Samsung terminal. But first we would like to thoroughly test the simple camera of the S9.
In terms of power, we think that the Exynos processor is more powerful than the Snapdragon that equips the LG V30. However, on a practical level, we do not believe that a user will be able to notice that difference.
Conclusions and price LG V30
And if we talk about autonomy, we may have a tie. Neither of the two terminals will last us much more than one day. In addition, both have fast and wireless charging.
In short, we are facing two very even terminals in terms of characteristics. Only small details, and the possible performance of the camera, can make us choose one or the other.
But let's talk about the price. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an official price of 850 euros. It has just been released, so it is difficult to find it on sale. As for the LG V30, its official price is 800 euros. However, if we search well, we can find it around 650 euros. Perhaps this price difference does make us tip the balance from one side or the other. What do you think?
