Just a few days ago, one of the few high-end mobiles that was yet to see the light this year was officially presented. We are talking about the LG G7, a terminal with a beautiful design, double camera and a very powerful technical set. A mobile that, both in terms of features and price, comes to compete with any high-end device. Today we are going to face it with one of the best, the Samsung Galaxy S9.
Both terminals have many similarities. Large screens, with very few frames, glass as the main material, first-rate cameras and a lot of power inside. However, each one has its weapons to seduce the most demanding users. Which is better? Let's try to find out by putting them face to face. We compare the Samsung Galaxy S9 with the new LG G7 ThinQ.

Design
We start the comparison, as usual, talking about design. This time we have two similar proposals, although with certain peculiarities in each terminal.
We already know the design of the Samsung Galaxy S9. More than anything because it is practically identical to the Samsung Galaxy S8. We have a completely glass rear, with rounded edges that facilitate grip. The camera is located in the center and the fingerprint reader just below.
The front is taken over by the screen. The frames are very narrow, although they are present. In the upper part we have the front camera and in the lower one there is nothing.
The full dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 are 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 millimeters, with a weight of 163 grams. The terminal is available in blue, black and purple.
The design of the new terminal of the G family changes radically to move away from what is seen in the LG G6. Now it looks more like the LG V30. We have a glass body, edged with high quality aluminum alloy. The main camera is located in the central area, but in a vertical position. Under it we have the fingerprint reader.
Ahead, LG has rolled out another one of this year's hottest features. Yes, we mean the notch, that notch on the screen that made the iPhone X fashionable and that many Android terminals have adopted. However, in the LG G7 we can decide what to do with the notch, whether to leave it in plain sight or hide it. Something that we already saw in the Huawei P20 Pro.
The lower frame is very narrow and does not have any elements. The full dimensions of the LG G7 are 153.2 x 71.9 x 7.9 millimeters, with a weight of 162 grams. It will be available, for now, in black, silver and blue.
Both terminals are resistant to dust and water, as they are IP68 certified. Of course, the LG G7 also has the military resistance certification MIL-STD 810G.
screen
The screen has always been one of the strengths of Samsung terminals. The S9 maintains the same panel that we saw in its predecessor. That is, we have a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED screen with QuadHD resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels and 18.5: 9 format.
As you know, it is a screen with curved edges that have some functionality. In addition, the Always On Display function has also been preserved, with which we can see information without unlocking the mobile.
In LG they also tend to give great importance to the screens of their terminals. However, the Korean manufacturer has decided to leave the OLED panels for the V series.
Thus, the LG G7 is equipped with an M + LED display. Under this "commercial" name hides a 6.1-inch LCD panel, with a QHD + resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels and a 19.5: 9 format. A screen that is capable of reaching a maximum brightness of no less than 1,000 nits, thanks to RGBW technology that adds a white sub-pixel.
Plus, it achieves the most accurate level of color reproduction, with 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. And it reduces battery consumption by 30% in the same bright conditions.
Cameras and multimedia
Samsung decided this year that the dual camera would only be on the Samsung Galaxy S9 +. So the "normal" model has had to settle for a simple camera.
A camera that, on the other hand, includes many new features. We have a 12 megapixel sensor with autofocus and dual aperture. The latter means that the terminal is capable of switching between an aperture f / 2.4 and f / 1.5. The first will be used for bright environments, while the second will be used in unfavorable light conditions.
In turn, the device has multiframe noise reduction technology. Thanks to it we can take up to 12 photos at a time to later eliminate noise or any type of imperfection that we see. The result is much sharper photos.
On the front, the Samsung Galaxy S9 equips an 8 megapixel sensor. This offers an aperture f / 1.7 and autofocus system.
As for new features in the software, we have the possibility of recording video in super slow motion (960 fps with HD resolution). Also the well-known AR Emojis, which allow detecting up to 100 points on the user's face and translating their expressions into an animated emoji.
In the LG G7 the manufacturer has wanted to maintain the functionality of the double sensor that we have been seeing in recent years. That is, LG insists on including a "normal" sensor and another wide angle.
This time both offer a resolution of 16 megapixels. The standard angle sensor features an aperture of f / 1.6, while the wide-angle sensor offers an aperture of f / 1.9.
The technical data is undoubtedly encouraging. In addition, the cameras are assisted by a powerful artificial intelligence system. The AI CAM system is capable of identifying the image to be photographed and adjusting the camera parameters automatically to offer the best result.
It has a base of thousands of image models categorized in 19 capture modes. In addition, it provides 4 options of effects for the user to choose the one that best suits the photo.
It also offers a special mode for night photography called SUPER BRIGHT MODE. This achieves, according to the manufacturer, night images with 75% more light thanks to artificial intelligence. Quadruple the brightness thanks to the combination of Pixel Binning technology and software processing, for crisp, bright photos.
On the other hand, the front camera of the LG G7 has an 8 megapixel sensor with f / 1.9 aperture.
And although we generally don't, with these two high-end terminals it is worth talking a bit about sound. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is equipped with powerful speakers manufactured in collaboration with AKG.
It also includes Dolby Atmos technology, which will allow us to have surround sound directly from the terminal.
For its part, the LG G7 has been designed with an exclusive resonance system to achieve more powerful bass and clearer and sharper highs. The idea of the manufacturer is that the terminal itself has enough power not to need a portable speaker.
It also has a 32-bit Quad DAC, capable of reproducing high-fidelity sound thanks to its 4 32-bit digital-analog converters. On the other hand, the LG G7 is the only one with DTS-X sound that offers 7.1 channel surround sound.
Processor and memory
We are comparing two of the most powerful terminals on the market. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an Exynos 9810 processor as its central unit. It is a chip with eight process cores manufactured in 10 nanometers.
This processor is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. A storage that we can expand with a microSD card of up to 400 GB.
Very similar is the technical set of its rival in this comparison. The LG G7 features the Snapdragon 845 processor, Qualcomm's most powerful chip to date. It offers eight cores with a maximum speed of 2.8 GHz.
Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 2 TB.
Autonomy and connectivity
The battery capacity included in high-end terminals seems to have standardized in the last year. Virtually all are between 3,000 and 3,500 milliamps. These two terminals are no exception.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 3,000 milliamp battery. As is usual in Samsung's top terminals, the S9 includes both wireless charging and fast charging.
Although we have not had the opportunity to test the terminal thoroughly, it should be enough to last all day without going through the charger.
LG's flagship, despite having a larger screen, also equips a 3,000 milliamp battery. In addition, it has Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging and wireless charging.
In terms of connectivity, both are equipped with the latest. Both equip Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11ac, NFC and USB Type C connector.
Conclusions and price
Although the high-end terminals of 2018 may seem like clones of each other, in reality there are many differences between them.
Starting with the design. In LG they have decided to use the famous notch, something that in Samsung they continue to avoid. Otherwise, both terminals have metal frames and glass bodies. We even have the fingerprint reader in the same place. So, the choice will be highly conditioned to the taste of each user.
As for the screen, the LG has a larger panel. It also offers higher resolution and brightness, although it does not have OLED technology. We will have to wait to see how it performs in the in-depth test of the terminal. We already know that the S9 screen is one of the best on the market.
Something similar happens to us with the photographic section. The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S9 has already been tested ad nauseam and all the analyzes agree that it is at an impressive level. However, the LG G7 is a very new terminal, which is not even for sale yet. We will have to wait to see if it can stand up to the S9 in the photographic section. Skills, of course, are not lacking.
And if we talk about brute force, we would have to subject both terminals to performance tests to find out which is more powerful. Because, honestly, with neither of the two we are going to have problems in its daily use. Both have the same amount of memory, both RAM and storage.
They are also fully matched on battery and connectivity. In fact, they have exactly the same. We have not been able to put them through the battery test, so we do not know which one will have the highest score. However, both should give us a full day autonomy without problems.
And we finish with the price, one of the slabs that can make the LG G7 not succeed as much as it deserves. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an official price of 850 euros. But it has been on the market for a long time, so we can find it much cheaper, even in operators.
The LG G7, however, is not yet available for purchase. Its official price is also 850 euros, so the S9 would win in price. At least for now.
