Design
Although we might think that these two terminals do not have much to do with each other, the truth is that in the design section they have many similarities. Only some details will make us opt for one or the other.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + uses glass and metal as its main materials. The dual camera has a portrait format, but is located right in the center of the rear. Under it we have the fingerprint reader, which has been relocated. Users who have tried the previous model are sure to appreciate this change.
The front is dominated by the screen. A large panel with rounded edges, perhaps the most striking and differentiating feature of the S9 + design. Samsung has chosen to keep very narrow but visible top and bottom bezels. This allows you to put the front camera in place, without disturbing the screen.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 + are 158 x 73.8 x 8.5 millimeters, with a weight of 183 grams. It is a large mobile, but it has little to do with the size of a mobile with a classic design and such a screen diagonal.
The iPhone X also uses metal and glass as its main materials. Apple has used a very striking stainless steel frame. This gives a different touch to the terminal, in addition to a considerable robustness.
The double camera is located at the rear, also in a vertical position. However, Apple has chosen to place it in the upper left corner. This protrudes a lot, leaving the terminal "lame" if we place it on a table. We have nothing else on the back of the iPhone X, beyond the company logo.
The front is all screen. The iPhone X has no front bezels, neither top nor bottom. We only have the famous notch, which hides the front camera system. The dimensions of the iPhone X are 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 millimeters, with a weight of 174 grams.
It is also worth noting that both terminals are water and dust resistant. The Samsung Galaxy S9 + is IP68 certified, while the iPhone X is IP67 certified.
screen
Although there are many differences between these two terminals, some are more remarkable than others. And the screen is one of the main ones.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + equips a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED panel with QHD + resolution and 18.5: 9 format. On this screen, the curved edges stand out, which, as you know, are not only aesthetic. These edges have various functions, although we would not say that it is something determining in our decision.
The Always On Display function is also maintained. With this interesting function we can see the calendar or notifications without unlocking the terminal.
At Apple they have also opted for a high quality panel, but smaller. Maybe with an idea to see how it works and this year launch a bigger model. IPhone X equips a OLED panel of 5.8 inches with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels.
It also has some extras. For example, Apple has integrated True Tone technology. This adjusts the white level to the color temperature of the light around us.
In addition, both terminals are compatible with the reproduction of content in HDR. However, only the iPhone X supports the Dolby Vision system. Something that, perhaps, on such a small screen is not too relevant.
Cameras
We are now going to the photographic section, one of the most important when it comes to spending 1,000 euros on a mobile. With their differences, but we can assure that we are dealing with two of the best cameras on the market.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + debuts the double camera in the S series. Specifically, it includes two 12 megapixel lenses. One of them, with a variable aperture that ranges between f / 1.5 and 2.4, adjusts to the situation at any given time, whether it is night, day or if the light is dim. According to Samsung, this system improves the brightness by up to 28% compared to the results of the Galaxy S8 +. The second lens is a telephoto lens with f / 1.5 aperture that allows you to add perspective to photos and play with blurring.
In addition, we also have news at the software level. For example, the S9 + features super slow motion, capable of capturing images at 960 frames per second in HD resolution. And it also includes 4K video recording at 60fps.
As for the front camera, we have an 8 megapixel sensor with aperture f / 1.7. At the moment Samsung has not wanted to include a dual camera system also in the front. Will we see it in the Note 9? We will have to wait.
The iPhone X also includes a dual camera system. We have two sensors 12 megapixels. One of the sensors is a wide angle with aperture f / 1.8. The other is a telephoto lens with aperture f / 2.4. Both sensors are larger than what we saw on the iPhone 7 Plus, and even slightly better than those found on the iPhone 8 Plus.
Another novelty of the iPhone X is that it includes optical image stabilization in both lenses. This makes it possible to improve photos in low light conditions, compensating for the inevitable movement of our hands. In addition, it also has video recording with 4K resolution at 60fps. As well as slow motion with 1080p resolution at 240 fps.
On the front we have a 7 megapixel sensor and f / 2.2 aperture. It also includes the possibility of using portrait mode with this camera and the Face ID identification system.
We do not forget the Animoji, as Apple calls them, and AR Emoji, as Samsung calls them. Thanks to facial recognition we can transform our facial gestures into an emoticon.
Processor and memory
If we go to pure technical data, Android terminals usually include much more striking hardware than Apple mobiles. However, the hardware-software symbiosis that Apple achieves in the end translates into spectacular performance.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + equips an Exynos 9810 processor. It is a chip manufactured in 10 nanometers, 64 bit and with 8 cores. Accompanying this processor we have no less than 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. In addition, we can expand this capacity with a microSD card of up to 400 GB.
As for the iPhone X, it equips an A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture and neural engine. This is accompanied by an M11 motion coprocessor and 3 GB of RAM. Regarding storage, we have two models: 64 or 256 GB. And, as you already know, the storage of the iPhone is not expandable.
Autonomy and connectivity
Big screens, very high resolutions, high quality cameras and a lot of power. All this requires a battery capable of withstanding the pull. And, although we have long assumed that high-end terminals are not going to give us much more than a day of autonomy, at least we want not to worry about charging the mobile until night.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 + has a 3,500 mAh battery. We still have a thorough test of the terminal pending, but it is the same capacity that its predecessor includes. In our in-depth test the Samsung Galaxy S8 + had no problem holding out for the entire day.
As for the iPhone X, as you know Apple never names the battery data. However, thanks to pages like iFixit we know that it has 2,716 mAh. In our in-depth test, with standard use (checking notifications when they arrive, browsing, messaging, social networks, some video, specific games, music, etc.) we have managed to reach the end of the day (around 1 a.m. 30% battery available.
On the other hand, both terminals include wireless charging and fast charging. However, the iPhone X does not have a charger compatible with fast charging as standard. So we will have to pull our wallet if we want to use it.
In terms of connectivity, both terminals have the latest on the market. Both include NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and dual-band 802.11ac WiFi.
Conclusions and price
When you are willing to spend almost 1,000 euros on a mobile, you want the best. However, no terminal is perfect. Although some are very close to being so. This is the case of the two mobiles that we are comparing today.
In the design section we cannot give a clear winner. Much depends on the taste of each user, but with both terminals we will have the feeling of carrying a first-rate mobile with us.
As for the screen, both offer the best quality on the market. In fact, specialized pages like DisplayMate confirm this. In my case, I would stick with the 6.2 inches of the Samsung Galaxy S9 +, but simply for a question of size.
Let's talk now about the photographic section. The Samsung Galaxy S9 + camera has just been named the best on the market by DxOMark. It has even surpassed the Google Pixel 2 camera, leaving the iPhone X in third place.
Less relevant, perhaps, are the two sections that we have left to comment on. At the power level, we have yet to pass the Samsung Galaxy S9 + through the performance tests. However, whatever the result, in both cases we will have the best possible performance.
And in terms of autonomy and connectivity, more of the same. Both offer the latest on the market. We would give one more point to the Samsung terminal for including the fast charging charger, which Apple has not done. Something, on the other hand, unforgivable on a mobile that exceeds 1,000 euros.
And speaking of money, let's go with the price. The Samsung Galaxy S9 + can already be pre-purchased with a price of 950 euros. The iPhone X has an official price of 1,160 euros. However, if we search the Internet, we can get it with a price very similar to that of the Samsung terminal.
Thus, even the price will not be a determining factor. Again, it is the operating system that has great weight in our decision. Which one do you like more, iOS or Android? Perhaps this is the first thing we should decide.
