Although this year it seems that all the prominence has been taken by the Plus and Pro versions, their little brothers are still tremendously interesting mobiles. It is true that the great novelties at the photography level have been taken by the large models, but both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Huawei P20 have many weapons to seduce users.
We are talking about two terminals with a premium design, a large screen, a lot of power inside and very powerful cameras. So, if you are thinking of one of these two terminals, you may have it difficult. To help you, we are going to compare them point by point. Which is better? We put the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Huawei P20 face to face.

Design
We start with the design of the terminals. While Samsung has followed a continuity line in the S9, Huawei has radically changed from the P10. And, while the S8 already had a modern and current design, Huawei's flagship in 2017 maintained a more classic design.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a glass back, with rounded edges. These are joined to the front by narrow metal frames.
The fingerprint reader is located at the rear. However, Samsung has changed its location to place it under the camera. A camera that, by the way, is located in the central part.
Ahead we have a curved screen on the sides, which occupies practically the entire front. The S9 has a very narrow top and bottom frame, although visible.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S9 are 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 millimeters, with a weight of 163 grams. It is available in black, blue and purple.
Huawei P20 back cover
The Huawei P20 also uses the glass on its back. A very shiny and reflective glass, almost like a mirror. The cameras are located in the upper left corner, in a vertical position. These stick out quite a bit from the case.
Ahead we have the screen, which at the top reaches the end of the terminal. Where is the front camera? In the famous notch, placed in the central part. A small speaker is also located here.
In the lower area we have a black frame in which the fingerprint reader is placed. The full dimensions of the Huawei P20 are 149 x 70.8 x 7.65 millimeters, with a weight of 165 grams. In other words, it is a bit taller and wider than its rival, but also thinner and heavier.
Something to keep in mind is that while the Samsung Galaxy S9 is IP68 certified, the Huawei P20 is not water and dust resistant.
screen
The two terminals that we are facing offer the same screen size. However, there is a big difference between them, as we will now see.
Samsung Galaxy S9 screen
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED panel with a QuadHD resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels and an 18.5: 9 format. As we said, it is an Edge screen, with curvature on both sides. In addition, it includes the Always On Display function, to be able to see the time and notifications without turning on the terminal screen.
Huawei P20 screen
Huawei, however, has decided to use an LCD panel and leave the OLED for the P20 Pro. Although this has helped lower the price of the terminal, it loses some quality compared to its competitors, including the S9.
The screen is 5.8 inches and has a resolution FHD + 2,244 x 1,080 pixels. The format, when carrying the notch, is a little different, with an 18.7: 9 aspect ratio.
Photographic set
We come to the photographic section, again with totally different bets. The Samsung Galaxy S9 still does not switch to dual cameras, but it does have some important changes compared to the S8.
Rear camera Samsung Galaxy S9
We have a 12 megapixel main camera with autofocus and dual aperture. This allows an aperture of 2.4 to be applied in bright environments, or 1.5 if there is no light. The terminal decides which opening to apply based on the conditions.
It also includes multiframe noise reduction technology, which consists of taking up to 12 images at a time to identify and eliminate noise or imperfections from the capture. The result is sharper photos with a higher quality feel.
It also includes two important software developments. The first is the ability to record videos at 960 fps with HD resolution. The second are the AR Emojis, with which we can create an avatar that moves the face like us.
We do not forget the front camera, with 8 megapixels, autofocus system and aperture of 1.7.
Rear camera Huawei P20
In Huawei they continue to bet on the RGB camera + monochrome camera set signed by Leica. The RGB sensor has a resolution of 12 megapixels with aperture f / 1.8. As for the monochrome sensor, it offers a resolution of 20 megapixels and an aperture f / 1.6. Together they achieve a 2x hybrid zoom.
In addition, Huawei has included in the P20 an artificial intelligence system that supports photography. Of him highlight the detection of scenes, night mode and electronic stabilization.
The Huawei P20 is also capable of recording 4K video and super slow motion videos at 960 fps (HD resolution). As for the front camera, we have a 24-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture.
Processor and memory
Processor and memory Samsung Galaxy S9
Although each manufacturer uses its own processor, we will not have any power problems with either of them.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 64-bit Exynos chip, manufactured in 10 nanometers and with 8 cores (four running at 2.7 GHz and another four at 1.7 GHz).
Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This capacity can be expanded using a microSD card up to 400 GB.
Huawei P20 processor
The P20 uses the same processor that equips the Huawei Mate 10. We are talking about the Kirin 970, a chip with eight cores (four running at 2.36 GHz and the other four at 1.8 GHz).
Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. However, the P20 does not have a microSD card slot, so the storage is not expandable.
Autonomy and connectivity
We are comparing two powerful terminals, with large screens and first-rate cameras. This could translate into poor autonomy if manufacturers are careless. But how do the S9 and P20 perform in this regard?
Samsung Galaxy S9 autonomy
The Samsung Galaxy S9 equips a 3,000 milliamp battery. Although at first it may seem like a very tight capacity, Samsung's processor is enormously efficient.
Although we have not had the opportunity to test the S9 in depth, we have tested its older brother. He manages to get to the full day very fair if we give him some work. To alleviate the lack of autonomy, it includes fast charging and wireless charging.
Autonomy of the Huawei P20
Huawei, however, has managed to make the most of the low thickness of the terminal. It has placed a 3,400 milliamp battery, capable of perfectly lasting the whole day. We will have to make a very intensive use to run out of battery before the night.
If so, we will have a fast charging system available. However, Huawei has preferred to save costs and not include wireless charging.
In terms of connectivity, both terminals are well served. They both feature dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, NFC, and USB-C. The biggest difference is that the P20 equips Bluetooth 4.2 and the S9 has BT 5.0.
Conclusions and price
It is time to draw conclusions. The first is that we are comparing two of the most interesting terminals on the market, in sight.
As for the design, it depends a lot on the tastes of each user. Both use the fashionable materials and both eliminate the front frames, each in its own way. So we leave it to your choice.
However, we can say that the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S9 is one step ahead of its rival. The AMOLED panel achieves better colors and brightness, without the P20 being a bad screen.
And what about the photographic section? Each terminal has its weapons, but both are at the top in terms of photography. If it serves as a reference, the well-known website DxOMark scored the P20 with 102 points, compared to the 99 achieved by the S9.
And if we talk about brute force, we have a similar situation. Although in the tests the Samsung Galaxy S9 may be ahead, with neither of the two we will have problems when executing any application.
We must bear in mind that the P20 does not have secondary storage. Hence it has twice the internal storage as the S9.
In terms of autonomy, the Huawei P20 is ahead thanks to a larger battery. Although, against it it has not accept wireless charging, something unthinkable for a current high-end terminal.
We only need to talk about the price. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an official price of 850 euros. However, we have already seen it on some web pages with a much lower price. On the other hand, the Huawei P20 has an official price of 650 euros. With all this, which terminal do you like the most?
