Samsung already has its new flagship on the market, the Samsung Galaxy S7. The new Korean smartphone keeps a design very similar to its predecessor, but incorporates many interesting new features. New processor, new camera, and even the flip of the microSD card slot. The question is, is it worth going from a Samsung Galaxy S6 to the new Samsung Galaxy S7 ? We are going to compare both devices so that you can draw your own conclusions.
Display and Design
Both on the screen and in the design is precisely what the new smartphone has changed the least compared to the previous version. The Samsung Galaxy S7 maintains the design line of the Samsung Galaxy S6, with the use of resistant glass on both the front and the back. The sides are still made of metal. However, the Samsung Galaxy S7 incorporates an improvement to the design of its predecessor. And it is that the edges of the back are somewhat more rounded, thus creating a more pleasant sensation.
However, we can find a great difference on an aesthetic level, although it is not directly related to the design. We mean the camera. The Samsung Galaxy S6's camera sensor sticks out much more from the rear than the Samsung Galaxy S7's camera sensor sticks out. In this regard, the Korean company has done a great job.
We must also highlight the IP68 certification that the Samsung Galaxy S7 has, since its predecessor does not have it. This certification indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is resistant to water and sand, although it does not mean that it is waterproof.
The screen, however, is exactly the same on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S6. And it is not surprising, since the Samsung Galaxy S6 screen is one of the best on the market. Both feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen with Quad HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. The screen's density is a whopping 576 dots per inch. Thanks to Super AMOLED technology, the two devices display vivid colors and really high contrast levels.
Camera
In the photographic section there have been important changes. The Samsung Galaxy S6 incorporates a camera with BSI sensor of 16 megapixels. It also offers optical stabilizer, autofocus, and an aperture of f / 1.9. As for video, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is capable of recording in 4K resolution.
At first, the reduction from the 16 megapixels of the Galaxy S6 to the 12 megapixels that the latest Korean terminal incorporates was surprising. But it is that the Samsung Galaxy S7 incorporates a dual sensor 12 + 12 megapixel technology that Samsung has called Dual Pixel . With this double sensor the company has achieved that the Samsung Galaxy S7 has a practically instantaneous autofocus. But in addition to the double sensor, the camera of the current Korean flagship offers an aperture equivalent to f / 1.7, which means, according to data from the company itself, that it iscapable of taking photos with 95% more brightness than the Samsung Galaxy S6. And if all this is not enough, Samsung has incorporated in the Galaxy S7 sensors with pixels of 1.4 microns compared to the usual micron. Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is also capable of recording video in 4K resolution.
The front chamber of both terminals has a resolution of 5 megapixels and, if the Samsung Galaxy S6, a wide angle lens, which facilitates selfies group. In the Samsung Galaxy S7, the company has not specified whether the wide angle has been incorporated, but we do know that the aperture is f / 1.7 compared to the f / 1.9 aperture of the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Power, storage and autonomy
Of course, the year that there is difference between the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 is noticeable in terms of the power offered by the devices. The Samsung Galaxy S7 incorporates a more current processor and grows in RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S6 mounts an Exynos 7420 eight-core processor with two cores running at 1.9 GHz and another two running at 1.5 Ghz. This set is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM. For its part, the Samsung Galaxy S7 mounts the latest processor developed by Samsung, the Exynos 8890. This processor also offers eight cores, four running at 2.3 GHz and the remaining four at 1.6 GHz. If we talk about memory, the Galaxy S7 offers 4 GB of RAM. This change in processor and memory increase represents, according to Samsung itself, a performance increase of 30% over the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Regarding the internal storage of the device, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is offered in three versions: 32, 64 and 128 GB of storage. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is only sold with 32 GB of internal storage, but this is because, as we will see later, the latest Korean terminal does incorporate the microSD card slot.
We have already commented on many occasions that the battery is one of the great problems of current smartphones. Manufacturers know this, so year after year they try to improve this aspect in their devices. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is no exception. While the Samsung Galaxy S6 incorporates a 2,550 milliamp battery, the latest Samsung terminal has increased this capacity to 3,000 milliamps. Taking into account that the resolution and the size of the screen are identical, the Samsung Galaxy S7 should have a much longer autonomy than the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Additional features
In addition to the more striking features, like the ones we have named so far, there are more differences between the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S6. The most obvious and one of the most important is, without a doubt, the one referring to the microSD card. The Korean company decided to do without the microSD card slot on the Samsung Galaxy S6, something that users did not like too much. Luckily, in the Samsung Galaxy S7 the company has rectified and included the much desired slot, thus giving us up to 200 GB more storage.
Another of the great novelties of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is the Always On Display screen. This option allows you to keep the device screen always on, showing relevant information such as the time or the calendar. Thanks to Super AMOLED technology, this function practically does not affect the autonomy of the terminal.
Finally, it should be noted that Samsung has wanted to give a lot of prominence to games in its new terminal. For this reason, it has equipped the Samsung Galaxy S7 with a liquid cooling system, which allows to lower the temperature of the terminal when playing games or when using the Gear VR virtual reality glasses.
conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is a great terminal. Its screen is one of the largest on the market (the proof is that Samsung has made no changes in this regard) , its camera is one of the best of 2015 and its processor, although not the latest model, performs above most current smartphones. So is it worth switching from the Samsung Galaxy S6 to the Samsung Galaxy S7 ? The new processor, the new camera and new features such as the Always On Display and, especially, the microSD card slot, can be great reasons for the change, but only each user has to decide.
