The new Samsung flagship is official since yesterday, so now it's time to face it against its maximum rivals. Although Apple will introduce a new iPhone next month, its most immediate rival is the iPhone X. Although the two are located in the higher range, the differences between them are more than obvious. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a bigger phone, with the S Pen as the main protagonist.
For its part, the Apple terminal seeks to offer the highest quality but in a more compact size. And we do not forget the particularities of each one. So the best thing is that we face them in our usual comparison. We put the new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone X face to face.

DESIGN
The glass has been imposed in the high range, so both devices bet on it. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a diamond-cut metal frame and a glass back that curves to the sides. Here we have the fingerprint reader and the double camera, both located in the central area.
As for the front, we have a design practically identical to that of the Note 8. A large screen, which we will now talk about, that curves to the sides. At the moment Samsung still does not fall into the temptation of the notch, so the Note 9 has an upper and a lower frame. However, these measure a few millimeters.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 are 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8 millimeters, with a weight of 201 grams. It will hit the market in four colors: black, blue and purple.
The iPhone X also uses metal and glass as its main materials. Apple has used a very shiny stainless steel frame, similar to what we see on some Apple Watch models. The back is made of glass.
The double camera is located at the back, although the apple company has preferred to place it in the upper left corner. This protrudes a lot, leaving the terminal "lame" if we place it on a table. In the central part we have the company logo, also with a glossy finish.
The front is all screen. The iPhone X has no front bezels, neither top nor bottom. We only have the famous notch, which hides the front camera system. The dimensions of the iPhone X are 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 millimeters, with a weight of 174 grams. That is, of course, it is much smaller than its rival.
It is IP67 certified, so it is also resistant to water and dust. Of course, it is one notch below the Note 9, which is IP68 certified.
screen
The screen is one of the great differences that we find between these two terminals. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel. It offers a Quad HD + resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels, which translates into a density of 516 dpi.
In addition to having a significant size, the Note 9 screen curves to the sides, with the functionalities that we already know. It also supports HDR video playback.
At Apple they have also opted for OLED technology. Although for a much smaller screen size. IPhone X has an OLED screen 5.8 - inch, 2,436 x 1,125 pixels.
It also has True Tone technology, which adjusts the white level to the color temperature of the light that surrounds us. And it also supports HDR video playback, including Dolby Vision system.
Photographic set
We now review the photographic section. As you can imagine, along with other high-end models, both offer the best in photography on the market.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 inherits the camera from the Samsung Galaxy S9 +. So we have two 12 megapixel sensors. The main one has a variable aperture between f / 1.5 and f / 2.4. The secondary is a telephoto lens with aperture f / 2.4 that will allow us to achieve a 2x zoom.
Both sensors are equipped with optical image stabilization. In addition, the camera is capable of recording video in 4K resolution at 60 fps and also in slow motion at 960 fps. As for the front camera, the Note 9 is equipped with an 8 megapixel sensor with f / 1.7 aperture.
But without a doubt the great novelty of the Note 9 is the incorporation of a scene recognition system. The terminal has 20 different modes to get the most out of photography. In addition, it is capable of detecting errors in photos, such as closed eyes, blurred image, dirty lens or backlight.
The iPhone X also includes a dual camera system. At the same rival, it has two sensors 12 megapixels. The main one is a wide angle with aperture f / 1.8. The secondary is a telephoto lens with aperture f / 2.4.
Both lenses are also equipped with optical image stabilization. In addition, it is capable of recording video with 4K resolution at 60 fps and also in slow motion up to 240 fps.
On the front we have a 7 megapixel sensor and f / 2.2 aperture. It also includes the possibility of using portrait mode with this camera and the Face ID identification system.
Processor and memory
In the presentation of Note 9, Samsung highlighted the gaming possibilities of the terminal. Something logical, since the exclusive agreement with Epic Games was announced to bring Fortnite to Android phones. Taking this into account, we should be facing a very powerful mobile.
And so it is. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 includes Samsung's Exynos 9810 processor. It is a chip that has eight cores, four running at 2.7 GHz and another four at 1.7 GHz. And yes, it is the same as the S9.
Accompanying the processor we have 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. However, Samsung has wanted to launch a model for those who want even more. The Note 9 can also be purchased with 8 GB of RAM and no less than 512 GB of internal storage. A capacity that we can expand using a microSD card of up to 512 GB, thus reaching 1 TB of storage. Now we can say that we carry a computer in our pocket.
As you know, Apple is not very given to providing technical data on its terminals. Still, we know that the iPhone X has an A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture and neural engine. This is accompanied by an M11 motion coprocessor and 3 GB of RAM. Regarding storage, we have two versions: 64 or 256 GB. And, as you already know, the storage of the iPhone is not expandable.
Does this mean that the iPhone X is less powerful than the Note 9? Not especially. Although it may seem like it on paper, we know that Apple knows how to make the most of the resources of its devices. To compare it with the Note 9 we will have to wait to test the Samsung terminal thoroughly.
Autonomy and connectivity
One of the points that received the most attention in the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was its battery. And it is not surprising, because autonomy was one of the weakest points of both the Note 8 and the Galaxy S9.
To solve this Samsung has equipped the Note 9 with a 4,000 milliamp battery. According to the manufacturer, it will be enough to endure without problems a day of intensive use, a day and a half with normal use. We will have to wait to see if it delivers what it promises.
As for the iPhone X, Apple never officially publishes the battery data. However, thanks to pages like iFixit we know that it has 2,716 mAh. Again, on paper it seems a very low capacity for a terminal of its characteristics. However, the great optimization of iOS allows the terminal to last all day without too many complications.
And if we talk about connectivity, as you can imagine, both are up to date. Both have Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 802.11ac with MIMO, NFC and, in the case of the Note 9, USB Type-C connection.
Conclusions and price
Now is the time to draw conclusions. The problem is that comparing an Android terminal with an iPhone is complicated, since they do not use the same operating system. And this, although it may not seem like it, may be the most decisive point in our decision.
Still, we are going to make a small final assessment. In terms of design, both terminals are top. The curves of the Note 9 are very sexy and the iPhone X exudes quality on all four sides. Both will make you fall in love live.
As for the screen, I personally prefer that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Not because it is better at the visualization level, simply because it is much larger.
The photographic section is perhaps the most delicate of the comparison. Both terminals offer us almost the best that exists in mobile photography. But we haven't tested the Note 9 thoroughly yet, so we can't give you a final verdict. In theory it should give the same performance as the S9 +, but we will have to check. Still, if you want to have a reference, the S9 + camera is ahead in the ranking made by the DxOMark specialists.
Brute force is easy to measure, as is battery. But we have not yet been able to thoroughly analyze the Samsung devices, so we cannot give you a verdict. What we are clear about is that neither of the two phones has, nor will it have performance problems in the near future.
What we can tell you are the results obtained by the iPhone X and the S9 + in the AnTuTu test. Apple's terminal got 227,733 points, while Samsung's got 254,431 points. So, as you can see, things are pretty even.
And, as we said, something similar happens to us with autonomy. The iPhone X clearly outperforms the S9 + in autonomy. But this is precisely one of the most important novelties of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. So this section we leave it in a tie until we see how the new flagship of the Koreans performs.
We finish the comparison with the price. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will hit the market with two memory options. If we want the model with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage we will have to pay 1,010 euros. We can also opt for the model with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage for 1,260 euros. As for the iPhone X, we also have two options. The model with 64 GB of storage has an official price of 1,160 euros. The other option offers 256 GB of storage and has a cost of 1,330 euros. That said, which terminal do you like the most?
