This year, mid-range Android phones have taken a step forward. Perhaps we are facing one of the best mid-range in recent years. Now we no longer have to resort to high-end terminals to get the latest features on the market. Two great exponents of this mid-range are the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 and the Honor 7X. And we are talking about two terminals that, for about 300 euros, offer an elegant design, a powerful technical set and a very interesting camera system.
However, despite being two large terminals with a very similar price, the differences between them are quite remarkable. So we wanted to compare them to help you decide on one or the other. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, so let's put the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 and Honor 7X face to face.

Design
As we mentioned, the mid-range is at a really impressive level. Many of the advances that the high-end models have presented have quickly reached the most economical terminals. The first to do so was the metallic design, something that the two models in the comparison show off.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 offers a totally uniform metallic finish without any bumps. The back edges are rounded for easy grip. And precisely at the back we have the antennae bands, which form a kind of gap at the top and bottom. The camera is perfectly integrated, which is completely flush.
On the front we have a design very similar to what we have seen in other Samsung terminals. So, at the bottom we have the touch buttons and the start button. Under the latter we find the fingerprint reader.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 are 152.4 × 74.8 × 8 millimeters, with a weight of 181 grams. The terminal is available in three colors: blue, gold and black.
The Honor 7X is somewhat more current, so it has already embraced the frameless display design. At least in part, since its design is not as spectacular as that of other terminals. This screen that occupies almost all the space on the front greatly influences its design. Honor has opted for a metal with a matte tone, both on the back and on the sides.
But what is most striking about the rear, in addition to the matte tone, is its double camera. This protrudes considerably from the case, which we don't see in its rival. We also have the fingerprint reader, although this goes quite unnoticed, since it has the same matte tone.
As for the front, the main protagonist is the screen. Although the Honor 7X does have two small frames, one upper and one lower. At the top we have the camera lens, while at the bottom we have the Honor logo in silver. The entire front is covered by resistant Gorilla Glass.
Despite its large screen, the full dimensions of the Honor 7X are 156.5 x 75.3 x 7.6 millimeters, along with a weight of 165 grams. That is, it is 16 grams lighter than the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 and slightly larger.
screen
As is logical, the screen is one of the big differences between these two terminals. Although they both have large displays, the Honor 7X's low-frame design makes its panel larger.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 equips a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED panel with Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The screen features 2.5D glass to slightly curve its side edges. In addition, it includes the Always On Display function. This allows us to see the time, calendar and notifications at a glance without having to unlock the mobile.
On the other hand, the Honor 7X has a 5.93-inch IPS panel and a Full HD + resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. And as usual this year, the chosen screen format is 18: 9. In other words, we have a larger screen and resolution than its rival.
Processor and memory
Although the design of the mid-range terminals is very similar to that of the high-end terminals, the price difference affects other characteristics of the mobile. And one of the most common is its technical set. Which does not mean that the technical set of these two phones is not enough for the majority of users.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 equips an Exynos 7870 processor. This chip has eight cores running at 1.6 GHz. Accompanying the processor we have 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. To expand this capacity we can use a microSD card of up to 256 GB.
His rival in this comparison has a somewhat more powerful technical team. The Honor 7X equips a Kirin 659 processor with eight cores. Four of the cores work at 2.36 GHz and the other four at 1.7 GHz. Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and no less than 64 GB of internal storage. And if we do not have enough, we can expand using a microSD card of up to 256 GB.
Camera and multimedia
In the photographic section we have two very different proposals. On the one hand, the Korean terminal has a single lens system, but very bright. On the other hand, the Chinese terminal equips a dual camera system, so fashionable today.
As we mentioned, the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 opts for a single lens system. Specifically we have a 13 megapixel sensor with an aperture f / 1.7. This camera has an autofocus system and LED flash. It is also capable of recording video with Full HD resolution at 30fps.
On the front we have a very similar camera, although somewhat less bright. Specifically, we have a 13-megapixel sensor, but with f / 1.9 aperture. That is, we are talking about a great mobile for lovers of selfies.
On the other hand, the Honor 7X bets on the dual camera system on its back. Specifically, we have a 16 megapixel sensor and a 2 megapixel sensor, designed to achieve the desired bokeh effect. Although the result is not comparable with that of high-end terminals, it does allow us to move the focus later at will.
To take selfies we have an 8 megapixel sensor that in our in-depth test of the terminal performed very well. It even surprised us when taking photos in low light conditions.
Connectivity and autonomy
Another common when it comes to saving costs in the manufacture of mobile phones are the different connectivity sections. Although many users may not care, it is another of the big differences between high-end and mid-range terminals.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 has Bluetooth 4.1, a headphone jack and a Dual-SIM system. It also has some features that we only see in higher-end terminals, such as dual-band 802.11ac WiFi connectivity and compatibility with the NFC system.
As for the battery, we have a magnificent capacity of 3,600 milliamps. However, Samsung has opted for a Micro USB connector for charging.
Also in Honor they have wanted to take advantage of the connectivity section to save. The Honor 7X also uses a Dual SIM system, Bluetooth 4.1 and a 3.5 mm Jack connector. However, this time we do not have AC WiFi and no NFC support.
As for the battery, the Honor 7X includes a 3,340 milliamp battery that is also charged with a Micro USB connector. A battery a bit tight for such a large terminal. In our in-depth test it lasted all day, but it hardly exceeds the autonomy day.
Conclusions and price
There is no doubt that we are facing two of the most interesting terminals of the mid-range of 2017. Samsung has put the batteries to try to compete with its Chinese competitors and the J range proves it.
In design we have two similar terminals. Both are completely metallic, although the Honor 7X takes advantage of its recent launch to use the “frameless” display design so fashionable today. On the other hand, the design of the Galaxy J7 2017 is more classic. To decide between one and the other we will have to use personal tastes, but we give the Honor terminal as the winner.
Something similar happens on the screen. The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 has a good panel, but the Honor 7X offers us a larger screen with a higher resolution. So the big difference between them is in the type of panel.
The Honor 7X also wins on the hardware level. At least on paper. It has a much faster processor and 1 GB more of RAM. It also offers 64 GB of storage compared to the 16 GB of the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017. The difference here is clear.
And as for the photographic section, we have doubts. Although the Honor terminal has a dual camera system, this is very simple. In addition, the camera of the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 offers a great brightness of f / 1.7. The front camera does not generate the same doubts, a section in which we see the Samsung terminal as the winner.
Finally, in the autonomy section, taking into account the great work that the Korean company did with the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017, we must give the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 as the winner. Its large battery and its Super AMOLED screen guarantee a very interesting autonomy.
In summary, we are facing two high-quality terminals, but that offer us very different characteristics. Of course, the price will not be decisive, since both the Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 and the Honor 7X have an official price of 300 euros. Which one do you like the most?
