The Samsung Galaxy A80 has already been unveiled after several months of rumors and leaks. The terminal arrives with a design never seen before, with a sliding mechanism that rotates the camera to act as a rear camera and a front camera. At the forefront, Samsung's mid-range is found with phones like the Huawei P30, a mobile that by price is in the same range as the Galaxy A80. Which of the two has a better camera? What differences can we find between its technical characteristics? We see it in our comparison of the Samsung Galaxy A80 vs Huawei P30.
Comparative sheet
Design
The design is surely one of the sections where both terminals differ the most. Although both have a body made of metal and glass, the Samsung Galaxy A80 has a somewhat more complex design than the P30.
The reason for this is due to its sliding mechanism, which is activated when using the front camera. In the case that we use the rear camera, the mobile will retain the same size by not making use of the aforementioned mechanism.
It is precisely thanks to this mechanism that the Galaxy A80 has more used margins, with a screen ratio that takes even more advantage of the surface of the body by not having any notch.
As for the Huawei P30, the terminal has the already traditional drop-shaped notch and a weight, thickness and height considerably lower than those of the Galaxy A80. We are talking about a difference in weight of 45 grams and in thickness and height that is close to 2 centimeters. This is due not only to the screen size, which is 0.6 larger than that of the Galaxy A80, but also to the rotating mechanism.
screen
There are few differences that we find between the screens of the Huawei P30 and the Galaxy A80. And it is that the two panels consist of the same technology, based on the now usual OLED.
Specifically, the screen of the Samsung Galaxy A80 consists of a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel and Full HD + resolution. The Huawei P30 screen, on the other hand, is made up of an OLED panel at 6.1 inches with the same resolution as the Samsung mobile.
In the absence of information such as the nits of brightness or the representation of the colors in the NTSC spectrum, everything indicates that the screen of the Samsung Galaxy A80 is superior. And it is that despite the fact that the OLED screen of the P30 is manufactured by Samsung, it is expected that the A80 is better in aspects such as those we just mentioned.
As for the fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen, both incorporate an optical sensor that uses light to recognize the fingerprint. Although we haven't had a chance to test the A80, we have tested the P30 for a few weeks. Our tests with respect to the latter rank Huawei's phone sensor as one of the fastest, both in speed and accuracy.
Processor and memory
We come to one of the most interesting section of all, that of performance. The configuration that we find in both terminals is very different.
In the case of the Samsung Galaxy A80 we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of non-expandable storage via micro SD cards. If we refer to the Huawei P30, the terminal comes with a Kirin 980 processor, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage expandable through Huawei's own NM Cards. How does all this data translate into a real user experience?
The different synthetic tests predict better performance in the case of the Huawei P30, not only at the process level, but also when playing games with a heavy load of graphics. We are talking about a difference in performance tests such as Antutu of more than 100,000 points, although as we have seen in other terminals, this is not a determining factor.
Regarding the memory configuration of the two phones, both have a storage capacity of 128 GB, the difference is that the Huawei P30 supports expansion using Huawei proprietary NM Cards. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy A80 integrates 2 GB more of RAM, which should influence when running several applications at the same time without having to reload the content.
Photographic section
If the two phones of the two South Korean companies stand out for something, it is because of the photographic section, with proposals that although they may seem different, have a common factor: the type of lens.
In the Samsung Galaxy A80 we find two effective sensors and an assistance sensor. The first two are based on 48 and 8 megapixel cameras whose focal aperture is at f / 2.0 and f / 2.0. The latter also has a 123º wide angle lens.
As for the third sensor, it is based on a ToF sensor with 3D Depth technology to calculate the volume of objects and improve portrait mode. We find a similar configuration in the Huawei P30, with three effective cameras of 40, 16 and 8 megapixels of resolution and focus aperture f / 1.8, f / 2.2 and f / 2.4. The lenses in this case are based on an angle, a wide angle and a last telephoto lens.
What is the behavior of the cameras of the two terminals? In the absence of testing the Galaxy A80, the technical data predict a better portrait mode thanks to the ToF sensor. In contrast, the Huawei P30 has a better night mode thanks to the camera software and the smaller focal aperture.
Of the P30, it is worth highlighting its telephoto lens, capable of reaching a 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital. Although we do not know the degree of aperture of the latter, it is expected that both phones have a similar wide-angle lens to capture a wider field of view.
And what about the front cameras? Here the Samsung Galaxy A80 takes the cake by employing the same main cameras as the front camera. In the P30 we find a single 32 megapixel sensor with an f / 2.0 focal aperture that, although it will be worth to get out of trouble, has little or nothing to do against the Galaxy A80 camera.
Connectivity and autonomy
Two of the sections where we find the least differences. With practically identical connectivity, the two phones from Huawei and Samsung have Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, WiFi compatible with all bands and GPS GLONASS.
Regarding the latter, in the case of the P30 we find a dual-band chip with better precision indoors. Another highlight is the 3.1 certification of its USB type C, thanks to which we can connect a mobile phone to an external monitor to perform computer functions.
As far as autonomy and charging are concerned, in the two terminals we find a similar capacity of 3,700 mAh in the A80 and 3,650 mAh in the P30. The larger size of the A80 makes us think that its autonomy will be slightly lower, although it will be necessary to test it by hand to verify it.
Lastly, the A80 boasts a 25W fast charge that is 2.5W higher than the 22.5W charge of the P30. In both cases, the total charging time is over one hour.
Conclusions
After seeing the main points of the two phones from Samsung and Huawei, all draw the final conclusions. Which mobile is better? The technical data tells us that the Huawei P30 is a more complete mobile than the A80. The main difference between the Huawei P30 vs Samsung Galaxy A80 is in the photographic section and the processor.
And is that despite the fact that the A80 has very competent a priori cameras, they have little or nothing to do with those of the P30, whose versatility is much greater. Another aspect to comment on is the processor. While in the A80 we find a mid-range processor, the P30 has a high-end processor, with all that this entails (better performance in games, open applications…).
But surely the determining factor in the comparison of the Samsung Galaxy A80 vs Huawei P30 is the price. With a difference of 100 euros (649 euros for the A80 versus 749 for the P30), the A80 is clearly below Huawei's option. Beyond the attractiveness of its design, the Galaxy A80 is a mid-range / high-end mobile whose price directly rivals mobiles such as the OnePlus 6T, the Xiaomi Mi 9 and even the Samsung Galaxy S10. That is why we believe that the P30 seems like a better option for most users.
