Samsung has kicked off 2018 with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018. The company's new terminal is located just one step below the Samsung Galaxy S9, which we will meet at the MWC in Barcelona. A terminal with an infinite screen design, an eight-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, a very bright main camera and a double front camera. That is, a mobile that looks very similar characteristics to high-end terminals.
So we wanted to compare it to the one that was Samsung's flagship for much of the past year. Even more taking into account that today we can already locate it with a price of around 500 euros. Today we are going to put the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 face to face. Will the new upper-middle-range terminal surpass its older brother? Let's check it out.

Design
Even though the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 inherits the infinity display design, it is not exactly the same as its older brother. First, it includes slightly larger front frames. Still, the fingerprint reader sits at the rear. Of course, we assume that due to the bad reviews that the S8 received, in the new model it has been placed under the camera and not next to it.
In terms of materials, the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has a curved glass body on the front and the back. The glass is supported by a metal frame that reinforces the whole. On one of the sides of the terminal we have the power button. And in the other we have the SIM tray and the volume buttons.
Another feature inherited from its older brother is the IP68 certification. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 is resistant to water and dust to the same extent as the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Although the two terminals are separated by almost a year, the design of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is still one step ahead of its rival. It is normal, since we will soon know his successor. But if we compare these two models, despite their similarity, we see that the S8 has narrower front frames. The curved finishes of the screen also help a lot, which we will talk about later.
These smaller bezels allow you to offer a larger screen in a similar size. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has dimensions of 148.9 x 68.1 x 8 millimeters, while the A8 2018 has measurements of 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 millimeters. As you can see, the size is very similar, being even thinner and lower than the S8.
For the rest, we have a design that combines glass and metal, just like the A8. Logically, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is also resistant to water and dust, thanks to the IP68 certification. But as we said before, in this model the fingerprint reader is located next to the camera and not underneath.
By being on the market longer, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is available in more colors. Specifically, we have no less than five to choose from: black, purple gray, coral blue, silver, pink. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018, on the other hand, is only available in three colors: black, gray-purple and gold.
screen
Samsung has been using Super AMOLED panels in all its terminals for several years. And this has not changed in the new model. However, the company continues to reserve the largest and highest resolution displays for its flagships.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 equips a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED panel. This offers an 18.5: 9 format, with an FHD + resolution of 2,220 x 1,080 pixels.
As we mentioned, the Korean company equips its high-end models with high resolutions. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED panel with a QHD + resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels.
In addition to having a larger size and resolution, the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S8 curves to the sides. And it is precisely this feature that makes the S8's design more striking than that of its rival.
But although the curves have not moved to the mid-range, other functions such as Always On Display have. Both terminals have this interesting function with which we can see the calendar or notifications without unlocking the terminal.
Main chamber
The photographic section is one of the most important for most users. In fact, it is often the only one that justifies the purchase of a high-end terminal. What can we expect at the photographic level of these two terminals? Everything indicates that a lot.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 equips a main camera with a 16 megapixel sensor. But the best thing about this sensor is that it offers an aperture f / 1.7. It also has pixels larger than 1.12 µm. That is to say, we are facing a very bright sensor and that, in the absence of testing it, should perform really well.
As for video, this camera is capable of recording with Full HD resolution at 30fps. Of course, the camera does not have an image stabilizer, which could lead to shake problems. We will have to wait for your test.
His rival in this comparison equips a camera already known to all. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel system with f / 1.7 aperture. This system allows a practically instantaneous approach and its quality has been well proven.
The Samsung Galaxy S8, however, does have optical image stabilization. This is available for both photography and video. And speaking of video, it can be recorded at a maximum resolution of 4K at 60 fps.
Frontal camera
Although the front camera of the S8 did improve compared to that of the Samsung Galaxy S7, it does not reach the level of its rival. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 equips a dual 16 + 8 megapixel sensor. They both feature a good f / 1.9 aperture and together they are capable of achieving the well-known blur effect.
But not only that, Samsung has decided to include the Dynamic Focus mode that we saw in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. This will allow us to change the focus to our liking, both before and after taking the photo. We can also activate the beauty mode before taking the photo.
This double camera is a declaration of intent for the company. In addition, it shows one of the great novelties that we could find in the future Samsung Galaxy S9.
As for the Samsung Galaxy S8, on the front it equips an 8 megapixel sensor with f / 1.7 aperture. Despite not having a double camera, it has a better aperture. In addition, this camera allows you to record video with a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels.
Processor and memory
As is logical, the new Samsung terminal does not equip the most modern processor of the company. This is reserved for high-end terminals. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has an eight-core processor. Interestingly, it has two cores that run at 2.2 GHz and four that run at 1.7 GHz.
Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM. It is an amount that is becoming a standard in the mid-range. So we will have to wait to see if this year the high-end go to 6 GB of RAM.
It also includes 32GB of internal storage. This can be complemented by a microSD card, which can be up to 256 GB.
For its part, the Samsung Galaxy S8 equips an Exynos 8895 processor. It is an eight-core chip , with four running at 2.3 GHz and the other four at 1.7 GHz.
Along with this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Like its rival, the S8 supports microSD cards up to 256GB.
Autonomy and connectivity
Finally we are going to compare the battery and connectivity data. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 includes a 3,000 mAh battery, the same capacity as the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017. For now we will have to wait for its thorough test to see how it performs.
What we do know is that the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has fast charging. Its rival in this comparison has the same battery capacity. The Samsung Galaxy S8 also includes a 3,000 mAh battery. This one supports fast charging and wireless charging.
At the connectivity level we will not find any difference. Both terminals have NFC, GPS, WiFi 802.11ac dual banking, Bluetooth v5.0 and USB Type C.
Conclusions and price
We reach the end of the comparison and we have to draw conclusions. At the design level, we think the Samsung Galaxy S8 is still ahead. The A8 is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air for the A-range, but the top-of-the-line is still more visually appealing.
Something similar happens with the screen. The S8 has a larger panel in practically the same space. It also offers a much higher resolution, without forgetting the curvature.
As for the photographic section, we must separate between the main camera and the front one. On the one hand, the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is superior to that of the Galaxy A8 2018. Although it has a lower resolution, the Dual Pixel system has proven to achieve magnificent results.
On the other hand, the front camera of the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 surpasses that of the Galaxy S8. Although the latter has a very bright camera, in the A8 we have a double sensor and the Dynamic Focus mode.
On a technical level, and in the absence of being able to carry out tests to confirm it, the Samsung Galaxy S8 should be above. It is true that the A8 2018 has a good processor and the same amount of RAM. However, the S8 has four faster cores than its rival. However, as we said, we will have to wait to perform the relevant tests.
Regarding autonomy, in both terminals it should be very similar. The S8 may show off its larger, higher resolution screen, but the results should be very even.
What we must be clear about is that both offer the latest from Samsung, from compatibility with Apple Pay and the brand's accessories, to the latest apps from the company.
Finally, we need to talk about the price. The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 has just hit the market with a price of 500 euros. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has been on the market for almost a year. Its current official price is 700 euros, although on some pages it is possible to get it for about 500 euros.
