The Xiaomi Mi A3 has been officially presented, not without criticism for aspects such as its screen or the fingerprint sensor. In front we find terminals like the Samsung Galaxy A50, a device that despite having an official price of 319 euros today it is possible to find it for a value very close to the Xiaomi proposal. To this is added the similarity between devices in terms of technical characteristics, not to mention aspects such as design, the triple camera or the fingerprint sensor on the screen. If you are thinking of buying one of the two terminals, discover all the differences between the Samsung Galaxy A50 vs Xiaomi Mi A3.

Design
The differences between the Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Samsung Galaxy A50 at the design level are practically negligible. Both feature a teardrop notched display, and both have a metallic finish on the sides and glass on the back. That of the Galaxy A50, yes, combines polycarbonate with glass to improve its resistance.
Regarding the dimensions of the two terminals, the Mi A3 comes as the most compact option thanks to its smaller screen. Compared to Samsung's A50, Xiaomi's model is 0.5 centimeters lower and 0.3 centimeters narrower. In contrast, its thickness exceeds that of the A50 by 0.75 centimeters, as well as its weight, which in this case exceeds 7 grams of difference.
This is due, in part, to the inclusion of polycarbonate and glass as the main material in the case of the Galaxy A50, this being one of the lightest mobiles on the market despite the size of its screen and that of the battery.
screen
We come to what is possibly one of the most controversial sections of the Xiaomi Mi A3: the screen. A screen that without anticipating events leaves serious doubts in brightness, color representation and definition.
If we refer to the technical data of the terminal we find a 6.1-inch OLED screen with HD + resolution under a Pentile matrix. This gives us a density of pixels per inch of only 282 points, which compared to the more than 400 dots per inch of the screen of the Galaxy A50 leaves the latter well above the Xiaomi Mi A3 in terms of quality of screen refers.
As for the rest of the features of the Galaxy A50 screen, it is made up of a 6.4-inch panel with Full HD + resolution and Super AMOLED technology. Our experience with the panel has been more than satisfactory, and we would even dare to say that the best in a mid-range mobile. For its part, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has one of the worst panels not only within its price range, but also in the mid-range of 2019.
And what about the fingerprint sensor built into the screen of the Mi A3 and the Galaxy A50? In both cases, the experience leaves a lot to be desired in aspects such as speed or reliability when performing finger recognition, which is why we recommend using facial unlocking or, failing that, a traditional pin.
Photographic set
The triple camera has reached the mid-range, and in this case we find two of the best exponents. Starting from a similar concept, both the Xiaomi and Samsung models have wide-angle and "depth" lenses. The latter, according to both manufacturers, is intended to improve the blurring of photographs taken with portrait mode.
Moving on to the technical section, the Samsung Galaxy A50 has three 25, 8 and 5 megapixel cameras with apertures that range between f / 1.7 for the main sensor and f / 2.2 for the rest of the sensors. As for the cameras of the Xiaomi Mi A3, these are made up of three sensors of 48, 8 and 2 megapixels with focal apertures f / 1.8 and f / 2.2. The results in photography, beyond the raw data, are very similar in the two mid-range mobiles.
In photos taken with the main camera, the two devices do a good job. Perhaps night photography is the point to improve in the two terminals, both in terms of brightness level and the treatment of the image (appearance of noise, watercolor effect…). If we move to the wide-angle sensor, here the victory of the Samsung Galaxy A50 is clear, having a larger lens aperture and a significantly higher quality than the Xiaomi Mi A3 lens.
Regarding photography in portrait mode, the treatment of Xiaomi images seems to us a better solution than that implemented by Samsung. The same goes for the front camera, 25 megapixels in the case of the A50 and 32 in the case of the Mi A3. Although the quality is similar in both cases, the portrait mode is better resolved in the Chinese proposal.
Processor and memory
As in the design, few are the differences that we find between the Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Samsung Galaxy A50 in terms of processor and memory. In synthetic tests, in fact, both obtain a very similar score in tests such as Antutu Benchmark, where the score is close to 145,000 points (146,000 points for the A50 and 143,000 for the A3).
If we get down to its specifications, while the Samsung Galaxy A50 opts for an Exynos 9610 processor from the house along with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, the Mi A3 integrates the Snapdragon 665 along with 4 GB of RAM and two 64 and 128 GB storage versions. In the case of the first, the expansion through micro SD cards is extended to 512, and in the case of the Mi A3, it is limited to 256 GB.
The good news is that both in one and the other we find a type of UFS 2.1 memory, which should affect the performance of the system when opening applications and moving large files. System that, on the other hand, is supported by Android 9 Pie, although in the case of the A50 under Samsung One UI, the customization layer of the South Korean brand.
This has a negative influence on both performance and support for updates throughout its useful life, well behind Android One, the type of system that we find in the Xiaomi Mi A3. It remains to be seen, however, how Samsung behaves over the months with the updates to the Galaxy A50.
Connectivity and autonomy
By having processors of the same generation whose specifications coincide in most cases, the differences in connectivity are rather scarce. In summary, both have dual band WiFi, FM radio, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS compatible with all satellites, in addition to USB type C 2.0. The only difference is found in the incorporation of NFC in the case of the A50 for mobile payments.
With regard to autonomy, although we have similar figures (4,000 mAh in the A50 and 4,030 mAh in the Mi A3), the numbers should be more positive in the Xiaomi model thanks to its smaller screen already the panel resolution.
The manufacturing process of the processor 7 nanometer also helps achieve greater autonomy, autonomy is compatible with loads up to 18 W. The A50, meanwhile, supports up to 15 W charging, although in no case does the box include a compatible fast-charge charger.
Conclusions
After seeing the main differences between the Samsung Galaxy A50 vs Xiaomi Mi A3, it's time to draw conclusions, which largely depend on the price. A price that starts from 249 euros in the case of the Mi A3 (in Amazon it can be found for 242 euros) and from 319 euros in the A50 (in Amazon it starts from 270 euros). Is it worth paying an average of 30 euros more for the latter?
From our point of view, yes. Roughly speaking, we find a much more complete terminal that surpasses the Mi A3 in aspects such as the screen, connectivity, photographic quality and design (less weight despite being 0.3 inches larger). The rest of the aspects are very on par, and unless we prefer Android One over Samsung One UI, the Galaxy A50 becomes a much more complete and recommended option.
