Since the middle of the year, Samsung has managed to break into the mid-range of smartphones with the Galaxy A series. Part of the blame for this is on models such as the Samsung Galaxy A40, a mobile that was launched a little less than half a year ago and that presents a series of interesting features, such as the dual camera, the battery or the Super AMOLED screen. In front we find old acquaintances like the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, one of the terminals that has worked best for those in Shenzhen. Both models, of course, start from a very similar price and whose difference does not exceed 20 euros. Thinking of buying any of these? Discover all the differences in our comparison between the Samsung Galaxy A40 vs Huawei Mate 20 Lite.

Design

The design section, along with that of the screen, comes as one of the differential points in the case of the Samsung Galaxy A40.

With a considerably smaller size than that of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the terminal is 1.4 centimeters lower than the Huawei model and 1.6 centimeters narrower. The differences in thickness are practically negligible (0.03 centimeters). Otherwise if we talk about weight, with a difference of no less than 32 grams.

The reason for this is due not only to the reduced thickness of its frames and the incorporation of a drop-shaped notch, but also to the inclusion of polycarbonate as the main material. For its part, the Huawei model incorporates glass and metal, which directly affects the build quality.

The latter also opts for a peninsula-shaped notch whose main difference lies in the size and the incorporation of two camera sensors. As for the rear, both have a fingerprint sensor, and both have a dual camera system.

screen

If the Samsung Galaxy A40 is characterized by something, it is because it is one of the few mobiles, along with the Xiaomi Mi A3, with a Super AMOLED screen within the range of 200 euros. As for the size and quality of the panel, it has 5.9 inches and Full HD + resolution.

Regarding the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the Chinese model has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD screen and the same resolution as the Galaxy A40. The differences, beyond the technical evidence, are found in the representation of color, the vividness of the same and the purity of the gray and black tones, with a clear superiority in the case of the Samsung model.

In terms of brightness and viewing angles, Samsung's A40 once again shows muscle in front of Huawei's panel. A brightness whose difference starts at 60 nits (410 nits of the Galaxy A40 compared to 350 nits of the Mate 20 Lite).

Processor and memory

Talking about a phone presented in the middle of this year compared to a terminal launched at the end of 2018 implies talking about technical differences as far as the processing section is concerned. Curiously, the palm in this section goes to the Huawei Mate 20 Lite.

And it is that while the Samsung model opts for an Exynos 7904 processor from its own house, the Mate 20 Lite has a Huawei Kirin 710 unit. Two processor whose test score difference like Antutu is no less than 30,000 points (139,000 points for the Mate 20 Lite vs. 108,000 points for the Galaxy A40). In contrast, the Galaxy A40 integrates a more advanced graphics, which directly affects performance in games and applications that demand graphics.

If we move to the section on memories, here the differences are rather scarce. Both have a single version of 4 and 64 GB, although the Huawei model only supports 256 GB expansion through micro SD cards. The Galaxy A40 limits this capacity to 512 GB.

Finally, it should be noted the provision of Android 9 Pie as the base system in the two terminals. The differences in this aspect come from the hand of the customization layer: Samsung One UI vs EMUI 9.0.

Photographic set

We come to one of the most interesting sections. Unlike the other aspects of the Galaxy A40 vs Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the differences in cameras are conspicuous by their absence.

In technical data, we find two 16 and 5 megapixel cameras in the case of the Galaxy A40 and two 20 and 2 megapixel cameras in the case of the Mate 20 Lite. The second lens in both cases is limited to calculating depth in portrait mode photographs, and the focal aperture of the main sensor is f / 1.7 in the case of the Samsung phone and f / 1.8 in the Huawei terminal.

In the absence of testing both terminals in hand, everything indicates that the Galaxy A40 has a superior photographic section a priori. On the one hand, the main sensor has a wider aperture, which has a direct impact on the brightness level of night photographs. The secondary sensor, despite having a lower aperture (f / 2.2 compared to f / 2.0 of the Mate 20 Lite), has a higher resolution, an aspect of special relevance when taking pictures in portrait mode, a portrait mode which is generally superior in Samsung mobiles, at least in the medium and low ranges.

And what about the front camera? The tables are reversed in this case. By having an additional sensor, the Huawei Mate 20 Lite allows us to capture photos in portrait mode that are superior in quality to those of the Galaxy A40. Added to this is the possibility of adjusting the level of background blur through the EMUI Camera application and the integration of a wide-angle lens for group selfies .

As far as technical data is concerned, while the Huawei Mate 20 Lite has two sensors of 24 and 2 megapixels and focal aperture f / 2.0, the Samsung Galaxy has a single sensor of 25 megapixels and the same focal aperture as the Huawei terminal.

Autonomy and connectivity

The reason for the Galaxy A40 compared to the rest of the Galaxy A series phones is its autonomy, an autonomy that comes under the arm of a battery of no less than 4,500 mAh, well ahead of the 3,750 mAh battery of the Mate 20 Lite and that together with the integration of a Super AMOLED panel of a smaller size than that of the Mate 20, it should give us much higher numbers in terms of hours of use. To this is added the integration of a 25 W fast charging system that exceeds that of the Mate 20 Lite by 7 W (18 W, specifically).

If we move to the connectivity section, the differences are less glaring. The only difference, in fact, part of the inclusion of Bluetooth 5.0 in the case of the Galaxy A40. The Mate 20 Lite, meanwhile, has Bluetooth 4.2. The rest of the aspects are identical in both cases: dual WiFi, NFC for mobile payments, USB type C 2.0 and so on.

Conclusions

After seeing the main differences between the Huawei Mate 20 Lite vs Samsung Galaxy A40, it is time to draw conclusions, conclusions that largely depend on the price. Today it is possible to find both terminals for a price that starts at 189 and 207 respectively in stores like Amazon. Is it worth spending 18 euros more for the Samsung phone? From our point of view, yes.

While it is true that the terminal is less capable in terms of processing, the integrated graphics is significantly superior to that of the Mate 20 Lite, which has a direct impact on gaming performance. But if there is a reason to opt for the latter, it is precisely because of its autonomy, one of the best in its price range along with the Motorola Moto G7 Power.

The rest of sections, such as the appearance of the device or its size, are somewhat more subjective, although in general we find a much more complete mobile if we talk about the Galaxy A40.
