We already have the first high-end terminal of 2019 among us. Today we have learned that the LG V40 will be launched on the market on February 4. Although, to be honest, the LG V40 was officially presented at the end of 2018, so it is unwise to say that it is the first high-end mobile of this year. Still, as you have been able to read in our in-depth review of the LG V40, it is a great device.
That is why we want to compare it with one of the last flagships that hit the market last year. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro became for many users and professionals the best mobile of the year. DESIGN AND DISPLAY
The truth is that the LG V40 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro have a very similar design. Both use glass for the rear, although with a somewhat particular finish. The LG V40 has a smooth finish, with a soft touch and that gives the feeling of being metal. It is pretty, although quite slippery.
The rear cameras are centrally positioned and horizontally oriented. Under them we have the fingerprint reader. The frames are metallic and rounded.
On the front the screen commands. We have a 6.4-inch OLED panel with a QHD + resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels. This has a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio and is compatible with HDR10 image playback.
In terms of design, the screen is surrounded by a small black frame, both on the side and lower edges. The latter is somewhat thicker.
The full dimensions of the LG V40 are 158.7 x 75.7 x 7.8 millimeters, with a weight of 169 grams. The terminal will be available, for now, in black and blue.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro also opts for a somewhat different finish. It offers a rear with a striped pattern that is hardly noticeable if it is not seen in good light. It seems subtle but it helps the mobile to slip less. And, supposedly, that there are fewer fingerprints after handling it.
The Huawei terminal also has the rear cameras in its central part, although in this model they form a kind of square. We do not have a fingerprint reader on the back because it is located under the screen.
Like its rival in this comparison, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro also has metal frames. In addition, both are IP68 certified for protection against water and dust.
As for the front, we have practically the same screen. The Mate 20 Pro incorporates a 6.39-inch OLED panel with a QHD + resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels. It has a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio and curves to the sides, making its design somewhat more striking than its rival.
Like LG's terminal, it has a small frame at the bottom and a notch at the top. By the way, the notch or notch of the Mate 20 Pro is somewhat larger than that of the LG V40.
The full dimensions of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are 158.2 x 77.2 x 8.3 millimeters, with a weight of 189 grams. As you can see, it is much thicker and heavier than its rival. But this has an explanation that we will see later.
Photographic set
Cameras and more cameras. We are facing two mobiles with triple rear cameras, so photography is one of its strengths. The LG V40 has a main sensor that boasts a 12-megapixel resolution and a magnificent f / 1.5 aperture. It is 1 / 2.6 ″ in size and uses 1.40 µm pixels.
The second sensor is a 107 degree wide angle. This offers a resolution of 16 megapixels and aperture f / 1.9. Finally, the third sensor is a telephoto lens with 12 megapixels of resolution and f / 2.4 aperture. The latter offers us a 2x optical zoom with an angle of 45 degrees.
This set of sensors is supported by an Artificial Intelligence system with scene recognition. In addition, the LG V40 camera application offers us several creative modes, as well as the possibility of recording video with 4K resolution at 60fps.
For selfies the LG V40 has a dual camera system. On the one hand, the main sensor has a resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture f / 1.9. It is a 1/4 ″ sensor with 1.12 μm pixels.
On the other hand, the front camera of the LG V40 has a second sensor with 5 megapixels of resolution. This one has an aperture f / 2.2, an angle of 90 degrees and pixels of 1.12 μm.
In the Mate 20 Pro Huawei puts aside the monochrome sensor to opt for a set more similar to that of LG. On the one hand we have the main sensor, a 40-megapixel wide-angle with f / 1.8 aperture.
On the other hand, it includes a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. And finally, the third sensor is an 8 megapixel telephoto lens with f / 2.4 aperture, optical image stabilization and x3 zoom (expandable up to 5 with the help of Artificial Intelligence).
In addition to powerful hardware, the Mate 20 Pro also includes an Artificial Intelligence system. In addition, it incorporates a new macro mode capable of focusing up to 2.5 centimeters.
On the front, the Mate 20 Pro has a 24-megapixel sensor and f / 2.0 aperture. In addition, the front system has 3D depth detection, which would be a similar system to Apple's Face ID. This allows us to have an advanced facial recognition system.
Processor and memory
We are facing two high-end mobiles, so inside we find very powerful technical sets. The LG V40 equips a Snapdragon 845 SoC with four cores running at 2.8 GHz and another four at 1.7 GHz.
This is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. An amount that we can expand using a Micro SD card of up to 2 TB.
As you can see in the image above, this technical set helps the LG V40 to get 241,010 points in the AnTuTu test. In addition, it scores 8,440 points in the Geekbench Multi-Core test.
Its rival in this comparison keeps an eight-core Kirin 980 processor inside. It has two cores running at 2.6 GHz, two at 1.92 GHz and another four at 1.8 GHz. This SoC comes very well accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.
To expand the storage we can only use an NM card of up to 256 GB, which is very rare. With all this, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro manages to beat the V40 in the tests, with a score of 270,728 points in AnTuTu.
Autonomy and connectivity
Later we will draw conclusions, but the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has very few rivals in the autonomy section. But let's talk first about its rival in this comparison. The LG V40 equips a 3,300 milliamp battery that, honestly, is nothing to write home about. It lasts the whole day almost always, but little more.
Of course, the top of the LG range has fast charging and wireless charging systems. On the other hand, you cannot complain about connectivity, with USB Type C, Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band 802.11ac WiFi.
But is that the Mate 20 Pro plays in another league in this of batteries. On the one hand, it has 4,200 mAh of capacity that, in addition, it knows how to manage very well. This translates into an autonomy rarely seen in recent years in the high-end range.
On the other hand, if this is not enough, the Mate 20 Pro has a fast 40W, which allows it to charge up to 70% in just 30 minutes. Such is its capacity that Huawei has included a reverse charging system. That is, the terminal can be used as a wireless charging base to give autonomy to others.
Conclusions and price
We reached the end of the comparison and we must draw conclusions. The truth is that these two terminals are quite similar, both in design and functionality.
As far as design is concerned, we are going to give the Huawei Mate 20 Pro one more mini point by eliminating the black borders on the screen. The curved glass makes the “all screen” feel on the front better than on the LG V40.
On the screen we have a clear tie, since both use the same panel technology and have the same resolution. It is true that the notch of the LG V40 is smaller, but this is due to the facial recognition system that the Mate 20 Pro includes. For me that the notch is more or less small is not important, so we leave it in a tie.
When talking about photography we can say that both terminals are at a high level. In addition, both offer the same versatility, since their combination of sensors is very similar. However, in image quality we think that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one step ahead.
Something similar happens when comparing the power of both devices. In daily use we will not notice differences between one and the other, so we will have to rely on the performance tests. And these say that the Mate 20 Pro is more powerful, so another mini point for the Huawei terminal.
It is in the autonomy section where we have a clear winner. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro far exceeds its rival in autonomy, charging speed and wireless charging possibilities.
And what about the price? Here we have a "negative" tie. The LG V40 will go on sale on February 4 with a launch price of 1,000 euros. For its part, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has already been on the market for a few months, but its official launch price was 1,050 euros. We don't like that high-end mobiles have taken over 1,000 euros as a custom, so a negative point for both. That said, which one do you choose?
