Although they are not all presented yet, at MWC we got to know some of the most powerful terminals of 2017. Both Huawei, Sony and LG showed their new premium terminals to compete in the high-end range. For this reason, we have been comparing the new top of the Android range for a few days. Today we want to compare two terminals of the high-end Android that surprise by their screen. One for having an unusual format and the other for its high resolution. Today we put the LG G6 and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium face to face.
Design
We have before us two terminals of the high-end Android, so its design does not disappoint. The LG G6 puts aside the modules to bet on a metallic design in which the narrow frames of the front stand out. The Korean company has managed to fit a 5.7-inch screen into the space of a 5.2-inch device.
The frames of the LG G6 are metallic, but the back that has been designed in glass. However, the terminal offers a very different touch sensation from what we see in other glass terminals.
Rear LG G6
It is in this rear part where we find the double lens of the camera, which is completely flush with the housing. We also have the fingerprint reader, located just below.
One of the most interesting design features of the LG G6 is its resistance to water and dust. The terminal offers IP68 certification, the same as offered by other terminals such as the Samsung Galaxy S7. The full dimensions of the LG G6 are 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 millimeters, with a weight of 163 grams. It is available in three colors: white, black and silver.
On the other side of the ring, we have the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The Japanese company has maintained the Xperia XZ design line, with a square format. Although the terminal still offers a metal chassis and glass on both sides, in our first contact with it we noticed that the upper and lower ends have sharp edges.
The Japanese company maintains large frames in the front, in which we do not have physical buttons. The fingerprint reader is located on one of the sides.
Rear Sony Xperia XZ Premium
The back is very shiny and a nice fingerprint magnet. The camera lens is located in the upper left area. The Xperia XZ Premium maintains the water and dust resistance of its predecessors, with an IP68 certification.
The full dimensions of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium are 156 x 77 x 7.9 millimeters, with a weight of 195 grams. The terminal will be available in two colors: silver and black.
screen
At the beginning we commented that the screen is one of the great attractions of these two terminals. Although it is true that for very different reasons. The first thing that stands out about the LG G6, and that we were already making progress in the design section, is its size. The Korean terminal offers a 5.7-inch panel in a 5.2-inch size.
The second thing that strikes us is its resolution QHD + 2,880 x 1,440 pixels. Why this uncommon resolution? Because the company has decided to use an 18: 9 format instead of the usual 16: 9. This makes the screen somewhat longer.
LG G6 screen supports Dolby Vision
And thirdly, the LG G6 screen stands out for being compatible with HDR images, both in Dolby Vision format and in HDR10 format. That is, we can enjoy HDR content from platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video as soon as their applications are ready for it.
But if the LG G6 screen draws a lot of attention, that of the Sony terminal is not far behind. And it is that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium incorporates the first 4K screen with HDR technology in a mobile. Considering that the panel is 5.5 inches in size, the density is fixed at 801 dpi.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the first mobile with a 4K screen
In addition to a high resolution, Sony has displayed all its technology on the screen of its new terminal. For example, we have Triluminos technology, which improves the brightness and color of images. In fact, it boasts 138 percent sRGB color rendering, making it capable of displaying more true-to-life colors.
We also have the dynamic contrast enhancer, which improves blacks and the sharpness of colors. And all this driven by X-Reality technology, which works so that the final quality of the image is very high.
Processor, memory and operating system
As we mentioned, we are talking about two terminals of the high-end Android, so their technical set will not disappoint us. On this occasion, both manufacturers opt for Qualcomm processors.

At LG they have finally opted for a Snapdragon 821 processor. While it is true that it is not the latest Qualcomm model, the Koreans have preferred not to suffer delays and launch the terminal with this chip. We shouldn't be too concerned, as this is the most powerful SoC of the past generation. We are talking about a processor with four cores running at 2.4 GHz. This processor is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. A capacity that we can expand using a microSD card of up to 2 TB.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium, however, does offer the latest Qualcomm processor. Specifically, it is a Snapdragon 835. A processor with eight cores, four running at 2.5 GHz and the other four at 1.9 GHz. An Adreno 540 GPU is responsible for the graphic section. Accompanying this powerful processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage UFS. And if we do not have enough with the internal capacity, we can expand it using a microSD card of up to 256 GB.
As for the operating system, of course, both terminals opt for Android 7.0 Nougat. As is usual, both companies will also include their respective customization layer.
Camera and multimedia
The photographic section is one of the most important when we talk about terminals of a certain price. Companies know this, and both LG and Sony tend to do a great job in this area. Its new terminals are no exception.
The LG G6 continues to bet on the dual camera system. It has two lenses with 13 megapixel resolution each. One of them is a 125-degree wide-angle and f / 2.4 aperture, while the other offers an f / 1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization.
LG G6 main camera
On the front, the LG G6 incorporates a camera with a 5 megapixel sensor, f / 2.2 aperture and a 100-degree wide angle. We will never leave anyone out of a selfie again.
Sony, however, keeps a single sensor on the Xperia XZ Premium. Specifically we have a main camera sensor Exmor 1 / 2.3 inch and 19 megapixels. Accompanying this sensor the company has implemented several features to improve the image. For example, it has a predictive capture system and another system that reduces noise in photographs.
On the other hand, the Xperia XZ Premium incorporates a predictive hybrid autofocus system and a 5-axis stabilization system. All this adorned with the possibility of recording videos with 4K resolution, but also with super slow motion at spectacular 960fps.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium main camera
We end this section by commenting that the LG G6 incorporates a Quad DAC, which improves sound reproduction, achieving a sound up to 50% clearer than simple DAC systems, according to company data.
Sony is not far behind in the sound section. The Xperia XZ Premium includes DSEE HX, LDAC technology, Digital Noise Canceling (DNC) technology and S-Force Front Surround dynamic stereo sound.
Autonomy and connectivity
It seems that, for now, both terminals meet everything expected of a high-end Android. But what about the battery? We have not yet been able to thoroughly test either of the two terminals, so we will have to trust the data of the manufacturers.
The LG G6 incorporates a 3,300 milliamp battery. It is good data, but we must not forget the large size and resolution of the screen. Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.1 fast charging system has also been included.
LG G6 Battery
On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a 3,230 milliamp battery. The battery includes Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging system and Qnovo's adaptive charging technology. There is no shortage of the company's well-known Stamina Modes. As with the LG terminal, in principle it is a more than acceptable capacity. However, it remains to be tested how the large resolution of the screen affects the real autonomy.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium battery connector
And in terms of connectivity, taking into account that we are facing two terminals of the high-end Android, we will not have problems. They both have Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, 802.11ac WiFi, and a USB-C charging connector.
Conclusions and price
It has become clear during this comparison that both the LG G6 and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium are two great terminals. However, when we talk about Sony terminals, design plays a very important role. The devices of the Japanese company offer a design that many users may not like.
For the rest, we will not be disappointed with either of the two models. Both terminals offer large screens with high resolution. And although both incorporate a good technical set, potentially we must put the Sony terminal ahead.
LG G6
As for the photographic section, both fully comply. Although Sony has chosen not to go to the double lens, the camera of the Japanese terminal is still one of the best on the market. They are two companies that have always more than delivered in this regard.
Finally, in terms of autonomy, we need to be able to thoroughly test both devices. While it is true that the announced capabilities look good, the large screen resolution creates doubts. We will have to wait to see how they manage the battery in real use conditions.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium
We only need to talk about the price. Although this time we do not have confirmation from either company. However, both terminals are expected to hit the market for a price of around 750 euros.
