Design
If we put the iPhone Xs and the Samsung Galaxy S9 face to face, we see two phones that follow the current line. That is, prominent screens, which are slightly curved, more in the case of the S9. The presence of frames is almost non-existent on these two devices. Of course, one of the most significant differences in the front is found in the upper part. While the iPhone Xs has a notch or notch, the S9 lacks it. This is something that possibly many users end up opting for the second model.
iPhone Xs
Both the iPhone Xs and the Galaxy S9 are built in glass with metallic edges with glossy finishes. Apple commented during the presentation of the phone that the glass used is more resistant than that which has never been used before in a mobile. This is something that will need to be checked further. However, we have had the opportunity to do the same with the S9 and we see that the design is one of its strengths. Having it in hand gave us the feeling of being in front of a very well manufactured mobile, with good finishes and, despite its appearance of fragility, resistant.
If we turn it around we also see some differences. The double sensor of the iPhone Xs is placed right on one of the upper sides, skimming the corner. This leaves practically the entire back clean, with the exception of the Apple logo, which presides over the central part as usual. There is no presence of a TouchID. On this occasion, as it did last year with the iPhone X, the company has resorted to facial unlocking to increase the security of the device. It should be added that the dual sensor is placed in a vertical position, as in the case of the only sensor on the Galaxy S9. However, this has been relegated to the central area. In addition, the company has included a fingerprint reader just below, which in many cases can lead to mistakes and put the finger right on the lens. At the moment, in this model Samsung has not been able to include the fingerprint reader under the panel, but we know that it is something that it is working on for its next phones.
Samsung Galaxy S9
In terms of dimensions, the iPhone Xs is thinner but heavier. It measures exactly 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 millimeters and weighs 177 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S9 has dimensions of 147.7mm x 68.7mm x 8.5mm and a slightly lower weight of 163 grams. In something that the new iPhone and the S9 coincide is that both can be bought in a new color. The second is available in purple, which makes the device look even more elegant. It is also possible to purchase it in blue and black. The iPhone Xs, meanwhile, arrives in gold, a color that adds to the traditional space gray and silver.
screen
The screens of the two phones that we compare are identical in terms of size, although with different qualities as we will explain. Both have a 5.8-inch. In the case of the iPhone Xs, the company has used OLED technology and a Super Retina HD resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels. It supports the playback of HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. In addition, it includes True Tone technology and 3D Touch system. We can say that this screen offers a maximum brightness of 625 cd / m2 and a contrast of 1,000,000: 1, which translates into a very good quality to view multimedia content or photos.
iPhone Xs
Samsung has made much better use of the space in this new generation when adding the screen in the S9. As we mentioned above, the Asian firm has reduced the frames to the maximum, both those of the upper part and those of the lower part. The result is obvious: a panel with an 18.5: 9 format, instead of the 18: 9 of the S8. In addition, to get even more benefit from the widescreen, a mode has been included to answer messages when we are viewing a movie or series.
Regarding the technology used, the S9 has a SuperAmoled screen with QuadHD resolution (1,440 x 2,960 pixels). In the same way, the Always On Display function has also been reintroduced, which allows us to access different services without having to unlock the device.
Another feature that the iPhone Xs and the Galaxy S9 have in common is that they have IP68 certification. This means that both are completely resistant to dust and water. It is even possible to submerge them up to a meter deep for half an hour. Gone are those days when we had to move the mobile away from the water as if they were Gizmos.
Samsung Galaxy S9
Processor and memory
How could it be otherwise, the iPhone Xs has landed with the new A12 Bionic processor, the first 7 nanometer designed by the company. It has 6.9 million transistors and 6 cores, so it is capable of working 15% faster than the previous A11. The GPU in turn has 4 cores and is 50% faster than its predecessor. To all this we must add that the neural unit is now composed of 8 cores, which allows improving the facial recognition system (Face ID). This SoC is also accompanied by a storage capacity of 64, 256 or 512 GB. We have no record of RAM. You already know how little friend Apple is to give this information.
Unlike the Californian, Samsung has no secrets. The Galaxy S9 has 4 GB of RAM. This model is in turn powered by an Exynos 9810 processor. It is a chip that operates at eight process cores and is manufactured in 10 nanometers. As for internal space, you can choose with 64, 128 or 256 GB. Likewise, another of the very marked differences with respect to the Apple device is that it is possible to expand any of them through the use of microSD cards of up to 400 GB.
iPhone Xs
Photographic section
As we discussed earlier, the iPhone Xs equips a double sensor, the Samsung Galaxy S9 does not. To enjoy this feature we would have to resort to the S9 +. In any case, his camera did not disappoint us at all. For now we have not been able to test the iPhone Xs in detail, but we were lucky to do so with the S9. In our tests, if we gave something a high mark, it was precisely this section. The Galaxy S9 has a 12 megapixel main camera with autofocus and dual aperture. The latter gives the possibility of applying an aperture of 2.4 in bright places, or 1.5 if the light conditions are poor. It also features “multiframe noise reduction” technology, which provides the opportunity to capture up to 12 simultaneous photos to identify and eliminate both shot imperfections and noise. The result is really clean and sharp images of great quality.
Samsung Galaxy S9
On the front, the Galaxy S9 mounts an 8-megapixel sensor with autofocus and F / 1.7 aperture. This camera boasts different modes and functions, such as super slow motion, which results in slow motion videos well suited to wow family and friends. They can be sent as GIFs, add sound to them, or set as wallpaper. Another of the great possibilities it offers are animated Emoji (AR Emojis), which capture up to 100 points of the user's face to make an exact imitation of expressions. Don't miss out on this option because it's really fun. Apple has "copied" it and created one similar to what it has dubbed Animojis.
iPhone Xs
The dual camera of the iPhone Xs offers a resolution of 12 megapixels. While the main sensor is a wide angle with 1.4 µm pixels and an aperture f / 1.8, the second sensor is a telephoto lens. It has an aperture f / 2.4 and allows you to achieve a 2x optical zoom. Both lenses have optical image stabilization. Among the novelties of this year for this section, we can the new Smart HDR system, as well as the option to modify the blur once the photo is captured. If we turn it around, Apple has added a 7 megapixel front camera and f / 2.2 focal aperture for selfies.
Battery and connections
Although both have fast and wireless charging, the Galaxy S9 equips a battery with greater autonomy. It is 3,000 mAh, while that of the iPhone Xs reaches 2,658 mAh. Apple commented during the presentation of its phones that the new iPhones have half an hour more autonomy compared to last year's iPhone 8. We will have to test if this is so in more detailed tests.
Samsung Galaxy S9
Regarding connections, the Galaxy S9 offers WiFi, LTE, NFC, USB-C connector, or Bluetooth 5.0. It also has a new version of Samsung DeX, the workstation that transforms this device into a very complete computer. For its part, the iPhone Xs comes with a Lightning connector, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, WiFi and LTE.
Actual Price
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has an official price of 800 euros, although it is possible to find it up to 250 euros cheaper in stores and operators. The iPhone Xs is available in three different versions depending on the capacity, but of course the prices vary depending on one model or another. Are these.
