Design and display
Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the iPhone X boast of design. It is a section that the two manufacturers have taken great care of and that is reflected in their new models. The iPhone X has been dressed in glass with aluminum frames with a glossy finish that add elegance. We can say that it has become one of the most beautiful Apple phones. It is true that this new mobile has a continuous line with respect to the iPhone 7 of last year. It has been built in a very similar way: flat back with a curved corner design. However, we appreciate a very marked difference at the rear. And we don't just say it because of the glass finishes. Now the double camera is positioned verticallyinstead of horizontally. The LED flash is located between the two lenses. The company logo has not disappeared and we find it presiding over the central part.
Likewise, the front has also changed considerably. Apple has ditched the wide bezels in this new generation. The side frames and the bottom frame have disappeared. We only appreciate a strip where the sensors, the face ID, the front camera and the speaker are housed. Another fundamental detail, in what coincides with its rival in this comparison, is the disappearance of the start button. Both Apple and Samsung have wanted these two flagship devices to be all screen. And they have succeeded. Otherwise, the iPhone X is somewhat thinner and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. It measures exactly 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm and weighs 174 grams. The Note 8 measures 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 millimeters and weighs 195 grams.
Something that the iPhone X lacks and that the Galaxy Note 8 indisputably boasts is a digital pen. The new Samsung phablet comes with an integrated S Pen that will allow us to comfortably draw or write what we want on the touch panel. It has a 0.7mm thick tip and is capable of detecting more than 4,000 pressure points. One of its great claims is that it allows you to draw GIF animations to send by WhatsApp. The S Pen is located in the lower right corner of the phone. It can be inserted in any position without problems of jamming.
Like the iPhone X, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has almost no frame presence. Its edges are slightly curved for easy grip, and the display folds to infinity. It also lacks a home button. Of course, unlike Apple, Samsung has not wanted its phablet to be left without a fingerprint reader and has added it to the rear. The iPhone X has facial recognition (Face ID), but this edition lacks this sensor. The Note is constructed of metal and glass. At first glance we appreciate a resistant, very beautiful and functional phone. It should be noted that both the iPhone X and Note 8 are resistant to dust and water. However, while the former incorporates IP67 certification, the latter is IP68, somewhat higher. This will allow us to submerge the Galaxy Note 8 in water for half an hour in a depth of up to a meter.
And what do we know about the screen? They are actually a similar size, although the Note 8 is larger. This model mounts a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED panel with QHD + resolution (2960 x 1440) (521ppi). The iPhone X screen is 5.8 inches. Apple has used Super Retina HD technology with a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels. In favor of the Note 8, it must be said that its format is more elongated than the 16: 9 we were used to a while ago. This will allow us to enjoy more vibrant, colorful and brilliant content. Thanks to Super Retina HD technology, iPhone X will also display content in sharp contrast for good viewing, both indoors and outdoors.
Processor and memory
We cannot deny that both the iPhone X and Note 8 are two of the most powerful devices of the moment. Each has his own style. Apple's phablet features a six-core A11 Bionic chip with 3GB RAM. It is a more advanced SoC than those assembled by its predecessors. According to the company during the presentation of the terminal, it has four efficiency cores (up to 70% faster than those of the A10 Fusion chip), and two performance cores, which offer up to 25 percent more speed.
The Note 8 processor is an 8-core Exynos (4 at 2.3 GHz and 4 at 1.7 GHz), accompanied by 6 GB of RAM. If we compare them, we can say that the processor of the Galaxy Note 8 is much more powerful. Not only because it is faster, but also because it is accompanied by a much higher RAM. This device is well prepared to deal with large processes such as heavy graphics games or multiple applications at the same time. On the other hand, the iPhone X arrives with a storage capacity of 64 or 256 GB (not expandable). The one of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 can be expanded with microSD, but it is only marketed with 64 GB.
Photographic camera
Not only Samsung has strived to make the Note 8's camera one of the best in its repertoire. Apple has done exactly the same. Both have a dual main camera located differently. The iPhone X is in a vertical position and the Note 8 is horizontal. Apple has not done it this way by chance, its goal is to get images with more clarity and depth. One of the sensors of the new iPhone has a resolution of 12 megapixels and has a six-element lens with aperture of f / 1.8 and double optical image stabilization.
The second sensor arrives with the same resolution but with an aperture of f / 2.4. This camera also includes a second optical image stabilization system thanks to a very novel solution of seven magnets. By putting both cameras together we will achieve a more powerful optical zoom than that of past generations. Likewise, the iPhone X also equips a 7 megapixel front sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. It is somewhat more basic than its rival, which has an 8-megapixel camera with f / 1.7 aperture and autofocus. Of course, both lack LED Flash.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also equips a dual main sensor with a wide-angle lens and another 12-megapixel telephoto lens each. It incorporates Dual Pixel technology. This will allow us to capture images with amazing quality. We have not yet been able to test the camera, but we will soon do so and show you the final result. The two agree on the possibility of being able to record 4K videos with the main camera. The high school does it in Full HD.
Battery and connections
The iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 have wireless charging and fast charging. However, at the moment we do not know the exact capacity of the battery of the first, but taking into account that it comes with fast charging, this is already a plus compared to its predecessors. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8's battery is 3,300 mAh. It is a somewhat lower capacity than the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, which has a 3,500 mAh. Anyway, we are talking about a very small difference. The company ensures trouble-free autonomy for a whole day.
Regarding the connections, the iPhone X comes with a Lightning connector, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, WiFi and LTE. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, USB Type-C, NFC and 802.11ac WiFi. Both also offer a series of very practical sensors, such as gyroscope, accelerometer, proximity, facial recognition…. Of course, only the Note 8 has a fingerprint reader (located on the back).
Operating system
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is governed by Android 7.7.1. It is one of the latest versions of Google's mobile platform that has quite new features. One of them is the multi-window function, which allows you to use two applications at the same time from the same screen. Nougat also boasts smarter notifications and a much more advanced power saving mode (Doze). It should be noted that the Note 8 will be a faithful candidate to update to Android 8 shortly.
The iPhone X has iOS 11. It is a version that has redesigned some sections, such as the messages or the control center. Siri now also comes with a new, more natural voice with the ability to simultaneously translate between multiple languages. The new version will be available from September 19 for a large number of iPhone models. In the iPhone X comes standard.
