Yesterday the new Huawei Y9 was made official, a mid-range terminal that comes with very interesting features. Among them, a large screen stands out, with good resolution and almost without frames. But also its photographic system, made up of no less than four cameras. A terminal that comes directly to compete with the Honor 7X or the Huawei Mate 10 Lite.
However, today we want to confront what we could call its predecessor. The Huawei Y7 arrived on the market last year ready to seduce users who were looking for a balanced mobile. And arguments were not lacking. But times change and now we can get even more for the same price. Or at least with a similar price, since this terminal has been going down. So, to find out if the new model is worth it, let's compare the Huawei Y9 with the Huawei Y7. We started!

Design
Huawei has changed the design of its entire range of terminals. They continue to maintain the same essence, but have been updated to current fashion. To do this, the front frames have been reduced to achieve a larger screen.
The Huawei Y9 follows this same design, with quite reduced front frames. In the upper one we have the two front cameras located. And at the bottom only the company logo.
Otherwise, it offers an all-metal chassis, with a very clean finish. In the back we have the two cameras in the upper left area. These are very well integrated and go quite unnoticed. In the central area we have the fingerprint reader, also very well integrated.
The dimensions of the Huawei Y9 are still unknown. Yes we can see in the images that it has rounded edges, following a design very similar to that seen in other terminals of the brand. It will be available in black, gold, and a nice blue.
For its part, the Huawei Y7 offers a more classic design. The front frames are much larger than those of its rival. In addition, specifically the lower one, it has no function, since the buttons are integrated into the screen.
As for the rest of the design, the Huawei Y7 also has a metal body. It offers a rear with rounded edges and, in the absence of confirmation, somewhat thicker than that of its rival.
The camera is located in the central area and stands out quite a lot, as it is surrounded by a ring in brighter color. For the rest, we only have the logo in the lower area. And no, the Huawei Y7 does not have a fingerprint reader.
The dimensions of the Huawei Y7 are 153.6 x 76.4 x 8.35 millimeters, with a weight of 165 grams. The terminal is available in three colors: gray, silver and gold.
screen
The differences at the design level become even bigger when we talk about the screen. The Huawei Y9 has a 5.93-inch panel and 18: 9 format. In addition, it offers an interesting resolution of 1,080 x 2,160 pixels.
His rival in this comparison, however, is satisfied with a more modest team. The Huawei Y7 has a 5.5-inch panel. This offers an HD resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels.
Cameras
We now go to the photographic section. The main camera of the Huawei Y9 2018 is dual. The main sensor has a resolution of 13 megapixels. The second has a resolution of 2 megapixels. As usual, this second sensor is used to achieve the desired blur or bokeh effect. In addition, we will have the typical modes of the Huawei camera application.
But perhaps even more interesting are the front cameras. Because yes, the Huawei Y9 also has a dual camera system on the front. Specifically we have a 16 megapixel sensor, which is accompanied by another 2 megapixel sensor. Of course, the second sensor will allow us to take selfies with a blur effect.
Its rival in this comparison equips a main camera with a single sensor. Specifically, it has a 12 megapixel sensor with 1.25 µm pixels. It also includes an LED flash and a phase detection focus system for better captures.
The front camera has an 8 megapixel sensor. In addition, it has facial recognition technology and a beauty mode. The latter helps to remove defects and improve shine.
Processor and memory
The months that separate both terminals are also noted in the technical section. In addition, the new model equips a larger screen with a higher resolution, which requires more power.
The Huawei Y9 arrives with Huawei's Kirin 659 processor. It is a chip with eight cores, four Cortex-A53 at 2.36 GHz and four Cortex-A53 at 1.7 GHz. Accompanying this processor we have 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using a microSD card.
On the other side of the ring we have the Huawei Y7. This model equips an octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor at a maximum of 1.4 GHz. Accompanying this chip we have 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The latter can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 128 GB.
Autonomy and connectivity
We have not had the opportunity to test any of the two terminals in depth, so we can only talk about technical data.
However, this time we have it pretty easy. Both the Huawei Y9 and the Huawei Y7 have an interesting 4,000 milliamp battery. A rare capacity that should offer great autonomy.
Now, that both terminals have the same capacity does not mean that they offer the same autonomy. The Huawei Y7 should offer a much higher autonomy, since all its hardware is inferior. It has a smaller and lower resolution screen, as well as a less demanding processor.
In terms of connectivity, both have the usual ones, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS or 4G LTE. However, the Huawei Y9 incorporates a USB-C connector, while the Y7 makes do with a Micro USB.
Conclusions and price
We reach the end of the comparison and we have to draw conclusions. And, to be honest, we think that the Huawei Y9 is a far superior terminal to its rival. Starting with the design, since it has a more optimized and modern design. If we do not like terminals without any frame, there is no problem, since this Huawei model has a few minimum frames to be able to take the terminal more comfortably.
This new design allows you to have a larger screen. It is not that the 5.5 inches of the Huawei Y7 seem few, but if in the same size (or a very similar size) we can have a much larger screen, then better. In addition, the Huawei Y9 has a screen with a much higher resolution than the Y7. For this alone the new model would be worthwhile.
As for the rest of the design, both have a metal body. But, again, we have an element that differentiates both terminals. And this is none other than the fingerprint reader, which is not available on the Huawei Y7.
Therefore, both on screen and in design we have a clear winner. And what about the technical set? Well, something very similar. As we said before, the months that separate these two terminals are noticeable, a lot. The Y9 equips Huawei's own processor. A processor that, without being one of the most powerful, offers a very interesting performance. In addition, it has 1 GB more RAM memory than the Huawei Y7.
It also doubles the internal storage, going from the 16 GB of the Y7 to the 32 GB that the Huawei Y9 has.
And we do not forget the photographic section. Although we have not tested either of the two terminals, it would not be too risky to say that the photographic set of the Huawei Y9 is superior to that of its rival. It comes equipped with up to four cameras. It is true that the second sensor of both can be almost anecdotal, with those 2 megapixels, but it is enough to achieve the desired bokeh or blur effect.
Perhaps autonomy is the best weapon that the Huawei Y7 has. As we have discussed, both have the same battery capacity. However, the older model has much less powerful hardware, which should give you an advantage.
In short, we could say that the Huawei Y9 is better in design, display, technical set and cameras. Only in autonomy would the Huawei Y7 win. But what about the price? For now, the price of the Huawei Y9 is a mystery, since the terminal has not reached our country. However, there is talk of a price that will be around 200-220 euros.
It is the same price with which the Huawei Y7 was launched. However, this one, having been on the market for a few months, can already be found at around 150 euros. So is the price difference to the new model worth it? We honestly think so.
