Notch or notch? How do you like mobiles best? Seeing the front design of these two terminals, this may be one of their great differences. But, in reality, there are many differences between them. From the size of the screen, to the selection of cameras. Going through the technical set that equips each terminal. However, both the Huawei P20 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy A8 can be a great choice if we are looking for a mid-range terminal.
Although, at its launch, the Samsung terminal was more expensive, now it is easy to find it for the same price as the Chinese terminal. Therefore, we wanted to compare them to clear your doubts. Which one do I buy? We are going to try to help you by putting the Huawei P20 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 face to face.

DESIGN
As we mentioned at the beginning, these two terminals have some similarities at the design level. Both bet on the glass for the back, with metal edges.
The Huawei P20 Lite has the dual camera system located in the upper left corner. This has a vertical format, as we see in its older brothers, the P20 and the P20 Pro. In the central part we find the fingerprint reader.
Ahead we have a virtually frameless screen, with the famous notch at the top. At the bottom if it has a small frame, although this only serves to facilitate grip and place the brand logo.
The complete dimensions of the terminal are 148.6 x 71.2 x 7.45 millimeters, with a weight of 145 grams. The P20 Lite is available in four colors: black, blue, gold, and pink.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 also bets on glass and metal. However, one of its most notable points is the IP68 certification, which makes the terminal resistant to water and dust.
Like its rival, the A8 places the fingerprint reader at the rear. We have this located in the central area, under the camera sensor. That is, we have a design that is practically identical to that of the Samsung Galaxy S8, but with a relocation of the fingerprint reader.
On the front we have two frames, one upper and one lower. Without being too big, we cannot say that we are facing an all-screen mobile. In the upper frame we have the front camera located, while in the lower one there is nothing.
The full dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy A8 are 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 millimeters, with a weight of 172 grams. That is, it is considerably thicker and heavier than its rival.
screen
Let's talk now about the screen. The Huawei P20 Lite has a 5.84-inch LCD panel with a FHD + resolution of 2,244 x 1,080 pixels. This screen offers an 18.7: 9 aspect ratio, with a density of 408 pixels per inch.
At Samsung however, as usual, they have opted for a Super AMOLED panel. This has a size of 5.6 inches and a resolution of 2,220 x 1,080 pixels.
It also has the Always On Display function, present in most Samsung terminals since its premiere.
Photographic set
The photographic section is one of the most important in any terminal. The mid-range buyer knows that it will not have the same performance as a high-end, but always demands a minimum of quality.
The Huawei P20 Lite is equipped with a double camera on its back. This is made up of a 12 megapixel main sensor that collects all the information in color. And for a second sensor that is only 2 megapixels, and that is responsible for detecting the background to create the bokeh effect or portrait mode.
The selfie camera has a 16-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture. In our in-depth test both cameras were acceptable, especially the front camera.
His rival in this comparison opts for a very different strategy. At the rear we have a 16 megapixel sensor with a focus aperture of 1.7. It is a bright camera, offering great performance in good light conditions and acceptable performance when light is low.
On the front, however, it does have a dual camera system. Specifically equips a sensor of 16 and another of 8 megapixels. Both have aperture f / 1.9, which offers us good brightness. The use of a double sensor allows to achieve the famous bokeh effect.
Also, Samsung has included the dynamic focus feature. This allows us to focus and blur to our liking, both before and after taking the picture.
Processor and memory
In the technical section, both terminals are committed to in-house processors. The Huawei P20 Lite has a Kirin 659 processor from Huawei. It is a chip with eight cores, four running at 2.36 GHz and the other four at 1.7 GHz.
Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. And, unlike the Huawei P20 Pro, this one does have a microSD card slot.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 bets on a Samsung Exynos 7885 processor. It is a chip with eight ARM Cortex-A53 architecture cores and 64 bit. Four of its cores run at 2.2 GHz and the other four at 1.7 GHz.
Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 256 GB.
For those who love numbers, we can say that the Huawei P20 Lite obtained a score of 87,976 points in the AnTuTu test; while the Samsung Galaxy A8 stayed at 84,384 points.
Autonomy and connectivity
Let's now see how these terminals are autonomy. The Huawei P20 Lite equips a 3,000 milliamp battery. It also has a fast charging system. In our in-depth test it passed the full day of use without any problems.
In terms of connectivity, it has NFC, USB Type C port, dual band 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX, Category 6 LTE connectivity or the option of using two SIM cards.
Its rival also has a 3,000 milliamp battery. Under normal use, in our thorough test it lasted all day with no problems.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A8 also has fast charging. This is capable of recharging approximately 40 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes.
Regarding connectivity, we have a USB-C, 4G, WiFi AC and Bluetooth 5.0 port. That is, we can be sure that we will be up to date.
If you prefer to compare them with data, we can tell you that the Huawei P20 Lite achieved a score in the AnTuTu test of 7,136 points. The Samsung Galaxy A8, however, scored 10,025 points in the same test.
Conclusions
The mid-range comes stomping. It is not that we can compare these terminals with the highest-end models, but they offer characteristics that for many will be more than enough.
As we always say, design is something very personal. Some users may hate the notch and others don't mind it. Honestly, the two terminals offer a modern and beautiful design, with glass as the main material. We leave it to your choice.
In the photographic section is, perhaps, where both terminals generate more doubts. Both perform very well in favorable lighting conditions. But they both suffer in low light. In this section we must consider what we like the most, double camera on the front or on the back.
On a technical level, performance tests don't lie. We have a clear tie, with the P20 Lite slightly above the Samsung terminal (something invaluable in normal use). Yes, we must bear in mind that the Chinese terminal offers twice the internal memory than the Korean one.
On the other hand, in the autonomy section we have the Samsung Galaxy A8 as the clear winner. Although both endured the entire day without problems in our tests, the Samsung mobile has a considerable advantage in the tests to the little one of the P20 family.
And we come to the end of this comparison talking about the price. The Huawei P20 Lite has an official price of 370 euros. As you know it was launched only a few weeks ago, so it would not be surprising if its price drops in a while.
Its rival, however, has been on the market longer. Although the initial price of the Samsung Galaxy A8 was 500 euros, now we can get it for about 340 euros. And we will not have to search much, since in Amazon itself we have it available at this price. So which one would you choose?
