We had talked a lot about folding mobiles. Images, renders and possible prototypes had been leaked. All this so that, finally, at the MWC 2019 they become a reality. We knew that this year we would have some sample of where the shots were going, but we did not expect that there would be so many models available. Models that will even go on sale in the coming months. Although there are several brands that have presented their devices, the truth is that the ones that have attracted the most attention are the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
The Samsung terminal kicked off when it was presented a few days before the start of the fair. The Samsung Galaxy Fold offers a 4.6-inch exterior screen and a 7.3-inch main screen. It also includes a triple camera system and, of course, the best technology from the manufacturer.
On the other hand we have the Huawei terminal, which offers a design quite different from that of the Korean terminal. The Huawei Mate X sports a huge 8-inch screen when open and two 6.6 and 6.38-inch screens when closed. Two quite different designs but that have something in common, their high price and that include the best of each house. We put the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold face to face.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY
We said before that the design idea of both terminals is completely different. The Huawei Mate X has a single panel with OLED technology that, when folded, transforms into two screens. The main one is 6.6 inches and has a resolution of 2,480 x 1,148 pixels. As for the rear panel, it has a size of 6.38 inches with a resolution of 2,480 x 892 pixels.
When we open the mobile we have an 8-inch screen with a total resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels. To ensure that the panel can be deployed, Huawei has designed a special hinge that is hidden, but that the manufacturer assures is very resistant.
Just as the Huawei device we could say that it folds "out", the Samsung does it the other way around. In other words, we have a kind of "book" that has inside a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel with QXGA + resolution and 4.2: 3 format.
By having the main screen on the inside, the device needs an outside screen for use as a “normal mobile”. For this reason, the Samsung Galaxy Fold has a second 4.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with HD + resolution. This will be the one we use when we do not want to display the big screen.
To achieve the corresponding folding, Samsung has designed a new hinge mechanism that seeks to make the terminal open smoothly and naturally, and close flat and compact with a single movement. To achieve this fluidity, Samsung has designed a sophisticated joint with multiple interlocking gears. The mechanism has been hidden to ensure that the final design is not affected.
Of course, both terminals show their full potential when open. The Huawei Mate X does not have any type of notch, since the triple camera works both as the main and the front. Of course, we will not be able to use the camera when we are using the open mobile.
However, the Samsung Galaxy Fold does have front cameras. The Korean manufacturer has decided to put them in the upper right part, dulling, in my opinion, the image on the screen when the mobile is open.
At the moment Samsung has not provided the dimensions of the Galaxy Fold, so we cannot know if it is much thicker than a normal terminal (something logical on the other hand). We do have the mobile phone from the Chinese manufacturer. For one thing, the Huawei Mate X is just 5.4 millimeters thick when open. This measured corresponds to the part in which we only have a panel.
The thickest part, where the hinge is located, is 11 millimeters thick. This will be the thickness when the terminal is closed, which does not seem excessive to me. As you can imagine, the weight of the terminal does increase considerably. The Huawei Mate X weighs 295 grams, about 100-110 more than other high-end terminals.
Photographic set
In the photographic section, Huawei has wanted to make use of the triple rear camera system of the Mate 20 Pro. That is, the Huawei Mate X is equipped with a 40-megapixel main sensor, an ultra-wide-angle sensor with 16 megapixels and a telephoto It has an 8 megapixel sensor.
And what about selfies? To take selfies we will use exactly the same system. As we have already shown, the Mate X does not have a front camera as such, it uses the main triple camera system. This has the advantage that we will have the best front camera on the market. But the disadvantage (if it can be called that) will be that we will not be able to take a selfie with the screen open.
The folding and screen system that Samsung has decided to use means that the mobile does have to include a front camera. And it seems that Samsung has thought that, already put, it is better to include a photographic system so that we can take photos and videos with the mobile in any position.
Thus, the Samsung Galaxy Fold has a main system consisting of a triple sensor. On the one hand we have a 12 megapixel wide-angle sensor with dual aperture (f / 1.5 - f / 2.4), Dual Pixel focus system and optical image stabilization (OIS). On the other hand, a telephoto sensor also with 12 megapixels, f / 2.4 aperture and optical image stabilization. And finally, an ultra-wide-angle sensor with 16 megapixels of resolution and f / 2.2 aperture.
When the mobile is open, we can take photos and videos without having to close it by means of a double system located in the upper right part of the screen. This is made up of a 10-megapixel main sensor with f / 2.2 aperture and an 8-megapixel depth sensor with f / 1.9 aperture.
Lastly, the Galaxy Fold has a 10-megapixel on-deck camera with f / 2.2 aperture. This will help us to take selfies when we have the mobile closed.
The best hardware in each house
As we will see later, we are facing two very expensive devices. So the logical thing is that they include a technical set as powerful as possible today. And so both models do.
The Huawei Mate X is equipped with Huawei's Kirin 980 processor. It is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. A capacity that we can expand using an NM card of up to 256 GB.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold is also very well served. Inside it hides a 7 nm eight-core processor, whose name has not been revealed but we imagine it will be the Exynos 9820. It is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal UFS 3.0 storage. Of course, it does not have a MicroSD slot.
And in terms of autonomy, the Huawei Mate X is equipped with a battery based on two modules with a total capacity of 4,500 milliamps. This has a 55W Super Charge fast charge, capable of charging 85% of the battery in just 30 minutes.
For its part, the Samsung Galaxy Fold equips a 4,380 milliamp battery. This has fast charging both wired and wireless. The latter is compatible with WPC and PMA.
And in connectivity, as is logical, we have the latest in both terminals. However, although both models will be able to connect to 5G networks, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will do so only in a special version. The Huawei Mate X has the Balong 5000 modem, which offers a faster connection, a priori, than its rival.
Conclusions and price
There is no doubt that we are facing two revolutionary devices. Two models that let us see how the future of mobile terminals can be. A world of folding mobiles that, unlike that of "normal" mobiles, still has a lot to offer.
We are before two folding mobiles but they are completely different. The Huawei Mate X has a panel that when folded is “outside” the device. This is done on a frame that includes the photographic system.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold, however, opts to leave the large panel "inside" and place a second screen in the outer area for use as a normal mobile. Two different points of view of what the folding mobile can offer.
Leaving aside the design, it is obvious that both terminals offer the best technical set that each manufacturer has in its catalog. We have two terminals with the best cameras that their respective companies can currently offer.
In addition, they are also equipped with the best processors and a huge amount of memory, both RAM and storage. Perhaps the Galaxy Fold stands out over the Huawei Mate X for including 12 GB of RAM compared to the 8 GB of its rival.
The Huawei Mate X stands out, however, for including a higher capacity battery. A battery that also has a super fast charging system.
But of course, all this technology and innovation has to be paid for. Being the “early adopter” is usually paid quite dearly. On February 20, the Samsung Galaxy Fold became the most expensive mobile on the market with a price of 1,980 euros (not counting the eccentricities, such as gold-plated mobile phones and that type of device). The record lasted only a few days, since the Huawei Mate X took it away with a price of 2,300 euros. Who gives more?
