Do you like Huawei mobiles? Do you want one of their highest-end models but don't know which one to buy? Today we are going to help you. If you are interested in the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro, it is logical that the doubt arises whether it would not be better to buy the Huawei P20 Pro, since it is a terminal that has been on the market for longer and its price is much lower. So, to help you make the decision, we are going to put you face to face in one of our comparisons.
Both terminals include the best Huawei technology. However, the Mate 20 Pro sports a somewhat different design. There are also differences in the photographic section, where Huawei has decided to do without the black and white sensor. Is the difference in price we currently have between the two worth it? To draw a conclusion we compare the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Huawei P20 Pro.

Design and display
The design change in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro compared to the P20 range is evident. The front fingerprint reader has been removed (rather hidden) and the screen "stretched" almost to the end of the device. It still has a small black frame at the bottom, but much smaller than its rival in that comparison.
We also have changes in the rear. The use of glass and slightly curved sides are maintained to join the metal frames. However, the triple camera is now located in the central area. Together with the flash, they form a kind of dice on the back of the terminal, which is also very striking because it has a black background.
We go back to the front to talk about the screen. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro equips a 6.39-inch OLED panel with a 2K + resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels. And, although the front has been used more, it still has the notch at the top.
The full dimensions of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are 157.8 x 72.3 x 8.6 millimeters, with a weight of 189 grams. It is available in three beautiful colors: blue, green and twilight.
The Huawei P20 Pro uses the same materials, although it has a quite different design. We have a shiny glass rear, in which the camera is located in the upper left corner. It is placed in a vertical position and, although it also has a black background, it is more concealed than that of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The sides do not curve to the sides, thus offering a somewhat less striking finish.
Something similar happens at the front. We have a 6.1-inch OLED panel display with a resolution of 2,240 x 1,080 pixels. At the bottom of the screen we see a large black frame, in which we find the fingerprint reader. However, the Huawei P20 Pro has a much smaller notch than the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. This is because, as we will see later, the Mate is equipped with a complex facial unlocking system.
The full dimensions of the Huawei P20 Pro are 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 millimeters, with a weight of 180 grams. It is available in black, blue, pink and twilight.
Photographic set
The new Huawei Mate 20 Pro represents a major change in the company's camera system. The manufacturer has decided to eliminate its iconic black and white sensor, replacing it with an Ultra Wide angle. Thus, the triple camera set of the Mate 20 Pro consists of:
- The main RGB sensor of 40 megapixels and aperture f / 1.8
- An 8 megapixel telephoto lens with f / 2.4 aperture
- And a 20-megapixel Leica Ultra Wide-angle lens with f / 2.2 aperture
In addition, the terminal has an AI system and hybrid autofocus (deep focus, phase focus, contrast focus and laser focus). We also have optical image stabilization and a new macro photography mode.
As for the front camera, we have a 24-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture. This one also has an AI system, portrait mode and automatic HDR. This includes a complex 3D facial recognition system, which allows the mobile to be unlocked even without light.
The photographic set of the Huawei P20 Pro is well known to everyone. It was one of the first mobiles to include three cameras and is still one of the terminals with the best camera on the market. We have the following configuration on its rear:
- 40 MP RGB sensor with f / 1.8 aperture
- 20-megapixel Monochrome sensor with f / 1.6 aperture
- 8 megapixel telephoto sensor with f / 2.4 aperture
The set is completed by a 5x zoom that is a true marvel, an electronic stabilization system with Artificial Intelligence and a dual-tone LED flash.
For selfies we have a 24 megapixel front sensor with f / 2.0 aperture and the ability to record video with Full HD resolution.
Processor and memory
Also under the hood of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro we have changes. The new terminal of the Chinese manufacturer debuts the Kirin 980 processor. It is a chip manufactured in 7 nm and has eight cores (two Cortex A76 at 2.6 GHz, two Cortex A76 at 1.92 GHz and four Cortex A55 at 1.8 GHz).
Accompanying the processor we have 6 or 8 GB of RAM, depending on the version. And the storage capacity also varies, with 128 or 256 GB internal. In addition, the Mate 20 Pro supports NM cards up to 256 GB to expand the storage capacity of the terminal.
The P20 Pro, however, "settles" for the Kirin 970 processor. It is an eight-core chip (four Cortex A73 at 2.36 GHz and four Cortex A53 at 1.8 GHz), which is also accompanied by the Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage complete the set. And something to keep in mind is that the P20 Pro does not offer the ability to install a Micro SD memory card.
Autonomy and connectivity
The Huawei P20 Pro became, from the moment of its launch, one of the terminals with the best autonomy of the year. And even now, when we are a few months away from finishing it, it is still one of the best.
However, his "older brother" seems to have gotten over it. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro packs a massive 4,200-milliamp battery. This proved to us in our in-depth test that it offers sublime performance.
In addition, it is equipped with super fast charging of 40W of power. This allows you to charge up to 70% of the battery in just 30 minutes. And there is no lack of wireless charging, one of the most noted absences of its rival in this comparison.
But the Huawei P20 Pro does not fall short in this regard. It equips a 4,000 milliamp battery, which offers great autonomy. In addition, it also has fast charging, being able to charge from 0 to 100% in an hour and a half.
In terms of connectivity, it is the Huawei Mate 20 Pro that stands out. It is normal, since they are several months apart. The new model has 4G LTE Cat.21 and Bluetooth 5.0.
Conclusions and price
We reach the end of the comparison and we have to draw conclusions. Is the Huawei Mate 20 Pro better than the Huawei P20 Pro? The quick and easy answer is yes. However, it may not be enough to spend the price difference between the two.
But let's go in parts. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a larger screen with a higher resolution. In addition, its design, at least in my opinion, is more beautiful than that of the P20 Pro. You can see the passage of the months and the difference in design trends.
In addition, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro arrives with new technologies under its arm. We have a very advanced facial recognition system, a fingerprint reader under the screen and a new triple camera system. And, of course, a better processor.
However, the Huawei P20 Pro is still one of the best phones on the market. Perhaps its design has been somewhat more "outdated" compared to the latest releases, but the rest is still very top.
Are you still in doubt? The price may dissipate them. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro just hit the market and has an official price of 1,050 euros. The Huawei P20 Pro, for its part, was launched with an official price of 900 euros, but today we have seen an offer with which we can get it for 600 euros. So it will be each user who will have to assess whether or not it is worth investing in the new model. What do you think?
