Are you going to ask the Magi for a mid-range mobile but you don't know which one to choose? Today we are going to compare two models that offer high-end features at a very competitive price. On the one hand we have the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, with a 6.3-inch screen and no less than four cameras, two in front and two behind. The rival we have chosen for this comparison is the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018, Samsung's first mobile with a triple rear camera. Two good candidates if you are looking for a mobile that is around 300-350 euros.
Are these mobiles very similar? They have some similarities, but the truth is that they are quite different. The A7 runs away from the notch to offer a design with a somewhat smaller screen. Also, its best weapon to compete in the tough mid-range of 2018 is its triple rear camera. The Mate 20 Lite, however, opts for a design more similar to other devices, but with the usual Huawei refinements. Which is better? Let's try to find out by putting the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 face to face.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY
Except for some terminals that have been presented at the end of the year, such as Honor Magic 2, almost all 2018 models have followed a very similar design pattern. The metal edges and the glass back have become a kind of standard, logically inherited from the high-end.
The Huawei Mate 20 Lite does not escape these design patterns. It has metal frames and a glass back, although it is true that this is something different than usual. We do not know exactly what Huawei has done, but the back of the Mate 20 Lite (and of all the Mate 20 in reality) sports a design that looks metallic to the eye and sometimes even to the touch.
The double rear camera is centrally positioned and in a vertical position. In addition, it protrudes quite a bit from the case, creating a somewhat strange effect. The fingerprint reader is in the same position, just below the lenses.
On the front we practically only have a screen. Specifically, the Huawei Mate 20 Lite equips a 6.3-inch panel with a FHD + resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels. The front camera is set in a sizable notch. We also have a visible black lower frame, although possibly necessary to be able to hold the terminal well.
The full dimensions of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite are 158.3 x 75.3 x 7.6 millimeters, with a weight of 172 grams. It is available in black and blue.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 uses the same materials, although it has a somewhat different design. The edges are made of aluminum and the rear of glass, with a slightly brighter finish than that of its rival in this comparison.
The triple camera is positioned in the upper left corner and in a vertical position. The three sensors are together, placed in a kind of module that protrudes slightly from the housing. And in the back we have nothing else, since the fingerprint reader has been placed on one of the sides of the mobile.
As for the front, we already know that Samsung has never liked the idea of the notch or notch. So his solution, in most models, has been to place an upper and lower frame. In the case of the A7 2018 they are not excessively wide, but they are quite visible.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 has a 6-inch Super AMOLED screen. It offers an FHD + resolution of 2,220 x 1,080 pixels, practically identical to that of its rival.
The full dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 are 159.8 x 76.8 x 7.5 millimeters, with a weight of 168 grams. That is, having 0.3 inches less screen, the general size is practically identical to that of Huawei's mobile. A consequence of using frames instead of notch.
Photographic set
Let's talk about cameras now. It seems that the "latest fashion" is that the more the merrier. But the truth is that some terminals have shown that with a single sensor you can get very good results.
The Huawei Mate 20 Lite opts for a dual rear camera system. We have a main sensor with 20 megapixels of resolution and aperture f / 1.8. This is supported by a second sensor of just 2 megapixels that takes care of depth.
On the other hand, we also find a double camera on the front. The main sensor offers a resolution of 24 megapixels and an f / 2.0 aperture. It is accompanied by a second 2 megapixel sensor. It is clear that Huawei is strongly committed to the front camera in this model.
The Samsung terminal offers a totally different system. On the back we have three lenses. The main sensor has a resolution of 24 megapixels and aperture f / 1.7. This is supported by a 5 megapixel sensor with f / 2.2 aperture that takes care of depth. The third sensor is an ultra wide angle with 8 megapixels of resolution and f / 2.4 aperture.
As for the front camera, we have a single 24-megapixel sensor and f / 2.0 aperture. Both models have video recording with Full HD resolution.
Processor and memory
To handle so many cameras and an increasingly complete operating system, a good engine is necessary. And, without being comparable with the top mobiles, both the Mate 20 Lite and the A7 2018 have a good technical set.
Inside the Huawei Mate 20 Lite we find the Hisilicon Kirin 710 processor. It is a chip manufactured in 12 nm and has eight cores: four running at 2.2 GHz and another four at 1.7 GHz.
Accompanying this processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. A capacity that we can expand using a MicroSD card of up to 256 GB.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 is governed by a processor with eight cores, four running at 2.2 GHz and another four at 1.6 GHz. Accompanying the processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded using a MicroSD card up to 512GB.
As you can see, on paper they are two very similar technical sets. But for lovers of numbers, we better give you the results of the performance tests. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite got 139,766 points in AnTuTu. Its rival, the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018, obtained a result of 123,046 points. So you see, it seems that Huawei's chip is more powerful.
Autonomy and connectivity
Cameras and power are important, of course, but if autonomy is not up to par, we may have to discard a terminal. This time we are facing two models that have a good battery, although one of them stands out over the other.
The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is equipped with a 3,750 mAh capacity battery. In our in-depth test we found that it was more than enough to withstand a full day of intensive use. With very moderate use, it was even able to last for two full days.
Here the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 is a bit looser than its rival. It has a 3,300 milliamp battery that, with normal use, can last a full day. However, if we use it intensively, we may need a small charge at the end of the day. Neither terminal has either wireless charging or fast charging. In fact, the A7 2018 doesn't even have USB Type-C.
And in terms of connectivity, the Galaxy A7 2018 has Bluetooth 5.0, while the Mate 20 Lite has Bluetooth 4.2. Otherwise, both are equipped with dual-band 802.11ac WiFi.
Conclusions and price
We reach the end of the comparison and we have to draw conclusions. In terms of design, I think both models offer what users demand: metal edges and a glass back. The big difference between these two terminals is called the "notch." If you don't like the notch, there is nothing more to talk about, you must choose the Samsung. Although to me personally it does not seem like something to rule out a terminal.
In the photographic section we must tip the balance in favor of the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018. On the one hand, we have a somewhat brighter camera. On the other hand, the ultra wide angle offers the possibility of taking pictures different from what we have on other mobiles.
And as far as power is concerned, a mini point for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite. Although in normal use of the terminal we will not notice a difference, the performance tests do not lie.
The Mate 20 Lite also takes another mini point for its battery. This achieves greater autonomy than that of the A7 2018, despite having a larger screen.
Finally, let's talk about the price. I am afraid that this time this will not be a determining factor in your decision. Both the Huawei Mate 20 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 have an official price of 350 euros. However, searching the Internet you may find a more interesting offer. So, which one do you choose?
