- Huawei P9 Lite
Today we put two upper-middle-range terminals from the Chinese company Huawei face to face. Two terminals with screen resolution Full HD, processor eight - core, fingerprint reader and camera 13 megapixels. Two mid-range phones that offer us a good design, an affordable price and features that have nothing to envy to those of their main rivals. Today we face the Huawei GX8 and the Huawei P9 Lite.
Design and display
The two terminals that we are comparing show a quite different design between them, although both offer a premium design. The Huawei GX8 uses a one-piece aluminum body, using this material both on the edges and on the back. In the front we have a screen that extends to the sides, leaving practically no space for the frames. The two grilles located at the back of the terminal, where the fingerprint reader is also located, just below the camera, are striking.
The Huawei GX8 has dimensions of 152.5 x 76.5 x 7.5 millimeters and a weight of 167 grams. The terminal is available in two color options. We have a combination with the front in white and the back in silver, and we have another with the front part in dark gray next to the sides and the back in metal.
The Huawei P9 Lite offers a design very similar to that of the Huawei P9, but it does not use the same materials. So we have a unibody design with metal frames, but the back is made of plastic. However, at sight it gives the stick and even looks like metal. In the back we have the fingerprint reader located, as is usual in Huawei. The camera lens is smaller than that of its rival and is located in the upper left, and not in the center as in the GX8.
The full dimensions of the Huawei P9 Lite stand at 146.8 x 72.6 x 7.5 millimeters, along with a weight of 147 grams. The new terminal of the Chinese company is available in three colors: white, black and gold.
As for the screen, the Huawei GX8 bets on an IPS-type LCD panel with a size of 5.5 inches. We have a resolution Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with a density level of 401 dots per inch. The Full HD resolution, although it is a point below the most leading terminals, is enough to offer a good image quality both in daily use and in multimedia use.
The Huawei P9 Lite incorporates a screen of 5.2 inches with resolution Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The pixel density stays at 424 dots per inch. Taking into account these data, we could say that the quality of both screens is practically the same, only changing the size.
Camera and multimedia
The Huawei GX8 camera uses a BSI type sensor with a 28mm wide angle lens. The resolution of the camera is 13 megapixels and our thorough test were amazed at how light it was. The GX8 achieves very bright photos even in low-light environments. To ensure that the photos are not blurred, the terminal incorporates optical image stabilization and a curious object tracking function. The lens aperture reaches f / 2.0.
As for the front camera, Huawei GX8 commitment to a target with a resolution of 5 megapixels. Of course, it incorporates a maximum ISO of ISO-800, so it gets pretty decent photos in darker environments.
The Huawei P9 Lite incorporates a camera of 13 megapixel sensor CMOS IMX214 of Sony. It has f / 2.0 aperture and has LED Flash. As we have front camera with a sensor resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture f / 2.0. This camera incorporates a lens for wide - angle 27 mm to help with selfies group.
In the multimedia section, it is worth noting that the Huawei P9 Lite has a HISILICON Hi6402 audio DSP, 9 V intelligent PA, with an integrated speaker design. This system has been designed to produce a sound quality much higher than that of other terminals of the same range, even higher ranges.
Power, memory and operating system
The Huawei GX8 uses an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor, with a power of 1.5 GHz per core. This processor is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM, an amount more than successful. This set offers good performance during normal use of the computer, although it is true that with more powerful processes it can be somewhat short. Even so, thanks to the amount of RAM it includes, we can use several applications at the same time without reducing performance. As for storage, the Huawei GX8 comes standard with an internal memory of 32 GB capacity. However, this capacity can be expanded by using a microSD card.of up to 128GB capacity.
The Huawei P9 Lite incorporates an eight-core Kirin 650 processor manufactured by the company itself. Four of the cores run at 2 GHz and the other four cores run at 1.7 GHz. This processor is accompanied by 2 or 3 GB of RAM, depending on the configuration we select. The internal storage capacity remains at 16 GB, somewhat short today for the intensive use that most users usually give our terminals. However, this capacity is easily expandable by using a microSD card of up to 128 GB capacity.
To move all this hardware, the company has decided to use two different versions of Android. The Huawei GX8 bets on the Android 5.1 Lollipop version along with the brand's EMUI 3.1 customization layer. This layer of customization isn't too intrusive, but it does add some pretty cool applications. For example we have HiCare, a kind of guide for those who use a terminal of the brand for the first time. We also have the Themes application and the possibility of accessing different apps directly with the screen off by just writing a letter on the screen.
The Huawei P9 Lite we have not yet been able to test it thoroughly, but we understand that it will incorporate the same applications designed by the Chinese company. What we do know is that in this terminal the company has decided to bet on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and a more advanced version of the customization layer, specifically EMUI 4.1. However, it would not be surprising if the Huawei GX8 received the update to Android 6.0 shortly.
Autonomy and connectivity
The Huawei GX8 incorporates a 3,000 milliamp battery . It's not an outstanding battery, but it's not one of the worst in the range either. In our in-depth test we managed to work with the mobile for an average of a day / a day and a half without having to recharge it. Its rival in this comparison, the Huawei P9 Lite, also incorporates a 3,000 milliamp battery.
In the field of connections, the Huawei GX8 is compatible with high-speed 4G networks. Obviously, it also incorporates a WiFi 802.11 b / g / n connection. NFC connectivity is also included, a technology used to make payments through mobile phones. And how could it be otherwise, the terminal also offers GPS for navigation. The type of card used is nanoSIM, a very small format that is becoming the most widespread option among new releases.
Its rival, the Huawei P9 Lite, is also compatible with 4G networks and incorporates WiFi 802.11 b / g / n and WiFi Direct. GPS and NFC connectivity cannot be missing.
Conclusions
If you are doubting between one of these two terminals, the decision is going to be complicated. The Huawei GX8 offers an all-metal design, while the Huawei P9 Lite does not use metal on its back. However, if the design is similar to that of the P8 Lite, we can say that the finish of the terminal is quite good. Something that could make the balance go one way or the other is the size of the screen. While the Huawei GX8 mounts a 5.5-inch screen, the Huawei P9 Lite offers a somewhat smaller 5.2-inch screen. Of course, both screens have Full HD resolution.
As for the camera, both terminals mounted sensors 13 megapixels and an aperture f / 2.0. And if what we are interested in is having the most powerful mobile, we also have a complicated decision. Although both processors are eight-core, the Chinese company has decided to use two very different options. While the Huawei GX8 opts for a Snapdragon 616 processor with a power of 1.5 GHz, the Huawei P9 Lite incorporates a processor from the company, a Kirin 650 running at 2 GHz. Although on paper the P9 Lite should be more powerful, the GX8 mounts3 GB of RAM compared to 2 GB in the P9 Lite, which could affect performance. However, the Huawei P9 Lite could also have a version with 3 GB of RAM. In full capacity, the Huawei GX8 wins, since it offers 32 GB of storage as standard compared to the 16 GB of the Huawei P9 Lite. However, both terminals offer the possibility of expanding this capacity by using a microSD card.
Finally, comment that both terminals incorporate a 3,000 milliamp battery, which should perform a similar performance in the two devices. Where we do see a difference is in the operating system, with the Huawei P9 Lite being the winner in this regard, since it comes standard with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
