The Huawei P40 Lite is the latest launch of the Chinese firm for the mid-range. By price, the phone comes into direct competition with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, one of the terminals that has worked best for Xiaomi. Beyond the similarities around the price, the truth is that both terminals are quite similar in terms of technical specifications. There is only one marked difference between the Huawei P40 Lite vs Redmi Note 8 Pro: the absence of Google services on Huawei's phone. Is it worth it against Xiaomi's bet? We see it below.

Design to suit the consumer
So is. The design differences between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro vs P40 Lite are clear. In the first case we find a somewhat more traditional front, with a notch in the shape of a drop of water and a lower frame somewhat smaller than that of the Huawei P40 Lite.
The latter consists of an island-shaped notch, which helps you reduce the size of the upper frame. In fact, the phone is more compact; specifically 2.1 millimeters in height and 0.1 millimeters in width and thickness. Although the main difference in physical terms is found in weight, with a difference of almost 20 grams between one and the other, the Redmi Note 8 Pro being heavier.
The main reason for this difference lies in the screen size and battery capacity, which we will talk about in later sections. It should also be noted the presence of the IP52 standard in the Redmi Note 8 Pro, a standard that gives it some resistance to dust and splashes. Interestingly, both are built in metal and glass.
As for the back, while the P40 Lite opts for a square camera module, the Xiaomi mobile has an elongated module that also houses the fingerprint sensor. Huawei has chosen to install the fingerprint sensor on the right side, which can make it difficult for left-handed people to access it.
No tangible differences on screens
Few are the differences that we find in the screens of the two terminals, beyond the size (6.4 inches compared to 6.53 of the Redmi Note 8 Pro). The technical specifications warn of a similar quality: IPS technology, Full HD + resolution…
Unfortunately, Huawei has not provided data about the brightness of the panel, the level of contrast or the percentage of representation in the NTSC scheme. The Xiaomi model has a brightness level of 500 nits, a contrast level of 1,500: 1 and 84% fidelity in the NTSC scheme. Also, the screen is ensured by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 standard.
Kirin vs. Mediatek, Google vs. Huawei
In the technical section the differences are greater. First of all, the Huawei P40 Lite has a Kirin 810 processor, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage of type UFS 2.1. The Xiaomi Note 8 Pro, for its part, has a Mediatek Helio G90T processor, 6 and 8 GB of RAM and 64 and 128 GB of UFS-type storage. In numbers, the Mediatek module is somewhat less powerful in theoretical performance. It is also less efficient, having a less optimized manufacturing process.
But the biggest difference between the Huawei P40 Lite vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro lies in the software. If we ignore the differences between EMUI vs MIUI, the greatest asset of Xiaomi mobile is the presence of Google services, with all the advantages that this entails. Play Store, Google Drive, YouTube, Google Maps with full functions… It is true that we can install Google on the P40 Lite afterwards, but it is not a simple process and certainly not accessible to all audiences.
Cameras very similar in specs
The technical characteristics of the two phones show similar photographic results. Before comparing the specifications of both terminals, we recommend you go to the analysis of the respective mobiles at tuexperto.com to directly compare the photography results.
Taking a look at the roadmap of both terminals we find practically traced specifications. The two phones feature four cameras with an identical lens arrangement: main sensor, wide-angle lens, macro lens, and depth sensor. The only difference lies in the main sensor, and more specifically, in the resolution and the focal aperture: 48 megapixels compared to the 64 of the Redmi Note 8 Pro and f / 1.7 versus f / 1.8 of the Huawei P40 Lite.
The theory tells us that the camera of the Xiaomi mobile throws more detail and greater luminosity in low-light scenes. The rest of the sensors are similar in resolution and brightness level. Perhaps the only difference is in the aperture level of the secondary sensor with a wide angle lens. A priori, Xiaomi's camera is brighter, having a larger aperture.
And what about the front camera? The only theoretical difference is based on the resolution, with 16 megapixels in the case of the Huawei P40 Lite and 20 in the case of the Redmi Note 8. This should affect the final definition of the photos, although the processing of each phone can interfere with the results.
Similar autonomy with a big difference, the load
The autonomy of the two phones should not differ between one model and another excessively. It is true that the Xiaomi terminal has a battery with a higher capacity, specifically 4,500 mAh compared to the 4,200 mAh of the P40 Lite. It is also true that its processor is less efficient than that of the P40 Lite. To this must be added that the phone has a larger diagonal and a system tied to Google services, which ends up having a negative impact on battery life.
If we talk about charging technology, here the difference is much more tangible. The P40 Lite supports charging at 40 W, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro only supports charges of up to 18 W. In addition to its lower battery capacity, the P40 Lite should give us shorter charging times.
Connectivity on par (if we ignore the Huawei P40 Lite 5G)
A few weeks ago Huawei made official a version of the P40 Lite with 5G connectivity. However, its price is much higher than the base model, so we will not take it into account in the comparison.
Far from this detail, the truth is that the connectivity of the two devices is similar. 4G LTE, dual band WiFi, NFC for mobile payments, Bluetooth 5.1… We only found two differences. The first has to do with the presence of FM radio in the P40 Lite. The second, with the presence of an infrared sensor in the Redmi Note 8 Pro to change channels on the TV and control electronic devices from a distance.
Conclusions and price
To assess the purchase of both phones, you must take into account the current price of the two devices. The Amazon price of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is 210 euros, while the P40 Lite remains at 260 euros. Is it worth spending 50 euros more for the Huawei phone? All things being equal, no, or at least in the opinion of a server. And with the absence of Google services, even less. After all, both terminals are very similar to each other.
Cameras, battery, connectivity, screen… Unless we want a more compact phone, Xiaomi's mobile is the most recommended of the two. We can also opt for the Huawei P40 Lite E, a less ambitious model than the original version but cheaper at the same time. On Amazon it is usually around 165 euros.
