In the last few weeks we have seen some of the most interesting models of the upper-middle range of 2019. We have known the Oppo Reno, with its retractable front camera in the shape of a fin, the OnePlus 7, with a drop-shaped notch, and the ASUS ZenFone 6, with a main camera that rotates 180 degrees to become a front camera. They all have one thing in common: they offer a first-rate technical package at a very competitive price.
Today we are going to put the new creation from ASUS and the latest OnePlus terminal face to face. For price we have thought that the fairest thing is to compare the ASUS ZenFone 6 with the OnePlus 7, since the OnePlus 7 Pro is much more expensive. So, if you are thinking of buying these new phones, we are going to try to help you make the best decision.
Comparative sheet
Design and display
The two mobiles that we are going to compare (also the Oppo Reno) are characterized by having a large screen. However, the big difference between them is that the OnePlus 7 has a notch, while the ASUS model does not. In addition to having an all-screen design (almost everything in the case of the OnePlus), both terminals include metal frames and a glass back. That is, both follow the current trend of the high-end.
The ASUS ZenFone 6 has a camera module located in the center of the device that is able to rotate 180 degrees to become a front camera. Under this module we have the fingerprint reader. All buttons are placed on the right side (looking at the terminal from the front), including a special button for the Google Assistant.
As for the screen, it has a 6.4-inch IPS NanoEdge panel. It offers FHD + resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels, compatible with HDR image playback.
The full dimensions of the ASUS ZenFone 6 are 159.1 x 75.4 x 9.1 millimeters, with a weight of 190 grams. It is available in two colors: black and bluish silver.
The OnePlus 7 also has a glass back and metal frames. The double camera is placed in the center and in a vertical position. And, beyond the brand, we have nothing else at the rear. This is because the fingerprint reader is located under the screen.
The screen is a 6.41-inch AMOLED panel. It has a FHD + resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels. And, as we have already discussed, it has a fairly small drop-shaped notch.
The full dimensions of the OnePlus 7 are 157.7 x 74.8 x 8.2 millimeters. Its weight is 182 grams, so it is more compact, thin and light than its rival in this comparison. At the moment it is only available in Mirror Gray color.
Photographic set
Interestingly, the two terminals that we are comparing move away from the "fashion" of the triple camera to settle for a dual system on the back.
The ASUS ZenFone 6 features a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 main sensor with f / 1.79 aperture. In addition, it uses Quad Bayer technology to achieve 1.6 µm pixels. It is also equipped with hybrid phase detection and laser autofocus.
Accompanying the main sensor we have an ultra wide angle of 125º with a resolution of 13 megapixels. In addition, the camera is capable of recording video in 4K resolution at 60 fps and has three-axis electronic image stabilization (EIS).
And as for the front camera, it's simple, it doesn't have. As we have already mentioned, the dual camera of the ASUS ZenFone 6 is mounted on a module that rotates 180 degrees to emerge on the screen. In addition, this module can be fixed in any position, thus being able to take photos from angles impossible for other mobiles.
We found many similarities in the photographic set of the OnePlus 7, at least in the main camera. The dual system consists of a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor and f / 1.7 aperture. It also uses the 4-in-1 technique to get 1.6 µm pixels, so this is the same sensor. Of course, the OnePlus 7 includes optical stabilization (OIS), which gives it a certain advantage.
This sensor is accompanied by a 5 megapixel sensor with f / 2.4 aperture. This is not a wide angle, it is simply a boost sensor to achieve the bokeh effect. And as for the video, like its rival, it has 4K recording at 60 fps.
The drop-shaped camera that we find on the front is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 sensor and f / 2.0 aperture. It can record video with 1080p resolution at 30 fps and has a facial recognition system.
Processor and memory
We mentioned it at the beginning, these new mid-range models have very powerful hardware. They have little or nothing to envy in this section to the top of the range of other manufacturers.
Both the ASUS ZenFone 6 and OnePlus 7 feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor. It is the most powerful chip that, at the moment, the company has on the market.
In the case of the ZenFone 6, the processor is accompanied by 6 or 8 GB of RAM, depending on the version. In addition ASUS offers three storage capacities: 64, 128 or 256 GB. All of them can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 2 TB.
Very similar is the technical equipment that we find inside the OnePlus 7. In this case the processor is accompanied by 6 or 8 GB of RAM, in addition to 128 or 256 GB of internal storage. However, there are two differences with its rival.
The first one that the OnePlus storage is UFS 3.0, being one of the first mobiles with the new and faster version. And the second is that it is not expandable, since the OnePlus 7 does not have a memory card slot.
Autonomy and connectivity
Large screens, complex cameras and a lot of power under the hood. All this has a considerable energy consumption, so we need a battery in line.
The ASUS ZenFone 6 is equipped with a 5,000 milliamp battery. This account with Quick Charge 4.0 fast charge and, in the absence of testing it, it could give us an autonomy of 2 full days if we do not use the mobile in excess.
As for the OnePlus 7, it has a 3,700 milliamp battery. It also has a fast charging system, but neither of the two includes wireless charging.
And when it comes to connectivity, both are equipped with the latest. We have USB Type-C, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, and Bluetooth 5.0. In addition, both have stereo speakers and Dolby sound, a positive point for both.
Conclusions and price
As we have seen during the comparison, we are facing two very similar terminals. So the decision will have to be made by looking at small details and, obviously, the personal taste of each user.
The ASUS ZenFone 6 has a notchless design, with a totally “clean” screen. In addition, the use of a camera capable of rotating 180 degrees means that we can also use the main camera as a camera for selfies, thus gaining quality in our selfies. However, the durability of the motorized system may raise doubts for some users.
Another advantage of the ASUS ZenFone 6 over the OnePlus model is its battery, no less than 1,300 milliamps higher than that of its rival.
On the other hand, the ZenFone 6 offers the possibility of taking pictures with an ultra wide angle, something that the OnePlus 7 does not have. And, finally, the ZenFone 6 has a microSD card slot, something that the OnePlus terminal does not have either..
As for the OnePlus 7, it is somewhat thinner and lighter than its rival. It does not have motorized systems that can fail and it has an AMOLED screen, which usually means better visual performance.
Another difference is that it has a fingerprint reader under the screen, which could be considered “more modern”. In addition, it has UFS 3.0 storage, although we believe that in normal mobile use it is not something that most users will notice. And in photography, the OnePlus 7 has optical stabilization, which can help a lot in night shots.
In the rest of the sections we have a clear tie. Both offer premium design, both feature the same processor and a similar amount of memory, and even both feature the same main sensor in the camera. The latter does not have to lead to a similar photographic performance, since we have some important differences, such as the second sensor or the OIS that the OnePlus 7 has .
That said, we only need to talk about the price. We have three versions of the ASUS ZenFone 6, the one with 6 GB of RAM + 64 GB being the cheapest with a price of 500 euros. However, it would be fair to compare prices by choosing the version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. This has a price of 560 euros.
The OnePlus 7, with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, is priced at 560 euros. That is, we have a very clear tie even in price. So, which one do you choose?
