Table of contents:
- 43% of mobile phones sold in Spain cost less than 300 euros
- Up to 31% of mobiles sold in Europe cost between 200 and 450 euros
2018 has been the year where the mobile price barrier has been broken again thanks, in large part, to models such as the iPhone XS and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Even so, the reality is different. And it is that the price of low-mid-range mobiles is increasingly reduced. So much so, that almost 50% of mobile phones sold in Spain cost between 150 and 300 euros, according to data provided by Motorola. It is precisely thanks to brands such as Motorola that this type of mobile is sold in our country. But Spain is not the only country with this adoption rate. Other European countries are also increasing their purchase rate for smartphones below 500 euros due, again, to the reduction in prices in medium and low ranges.
43% of mobile phones sold in Spain cost less than 300 euros
It is not a secret for anyone that Spain is a country of Android mobiles. And it is no wonder, because due to the high price of phones like the iPhone, most users opt for cheaper options, which can be found in brands that bet on the Android operating system for their mobiles.
This is how we learned this morning at Motorola's presentation of the new Motorola One. In particular, 43% of mobile phones sold in Spain during 2018 cost between 150 and 300 euros. The brand has also let us know that its growth in this segment in the country has been 31% in the last year. Thanks to this growth, the Lenovo-owned manufacturer is today the fifth best-selling mid-range mobile manufacturer in Spain. This is due, as we have just mentioned, to the updating of the price and the characteristics of most of its terminals. Products like the Moto G series or the new Moto One have a good fault for it.
But this interest in cheap smartphones does not remain only in Spain. Other regions such as the United States, India, Latin America and of course, Europe, reflect a similar growth. In the latter, the brand has a growth of 42%. In Latin America, the leadership of the brand climbs to second position, three more than in Spain.
Up to 31% of mobiles sold in Europe cost between 200 and 450 euros
The trend of economic mobiles is growing in Europe. As we have just seen, Motorola's growth on the European continent amounts to 42% from 2016 to 2018.
In the same presentation we have been able to know that up to 31.7% of mobile phones sold on the continent cost between 200 and 450 euros. And it is that despite the fact that the minimum salary of other member countries of the European Union is higher, the interest in the purchase of cheap mobile phones does not decline compared to other territories. The reasons, again, are due to the presentation of mobiles with characteristics valid for the majority of the population and a low price. In fact, Motorola reflects an increase in the adoption rate of this type of mobile of 78%. This would be the main reason why the brand has grown by 42% in other European countries.
The conclusions from this data are clear: customers prefer cheaper mobiles but with some advanced functions. Brands like Motorola and others from China have been able to interpret the market. Others like Apple and Samsung choose to offer a higher price in both their medium and high ranges. Time will decide if the former were right, although seeing the upward trend in cheap mobile phones, it is to be expected that this type of model will end up flooding the market.
