One of the star features of the Huawei P20 Pro (and Huawei P20) camera is super slow motion. The terminal of the Chinese company is capable of recording at 960 fps, even if only for a few seconds. This is coupled with the magnificent result in photography obtained by the terminal.
Although it is not the first mobile that is capable of recording at 960 fps (both the Sony Xperia XZ1 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 also do it), each model has its peculiarities. This time we are going to review how you use super slow motion on the Huawei P20 Pro.
Slow motion mode
The Huawei P20 hides the super slow motion within the Slow Motion mode. This mode is not available on the main screen of the camera, so to access it we will have to go to the More option.
At the top (with the terminal horizontal) we have the slow motion speed. The terminal offers three options: 4x (120 fps), 8x (240 fps) and 32x (960 fps). Logically, the latter is the most interesting.
If we want to record a long sequence, like rain, there is no problem. We simply click on the red button and the mobile will start recording. You will see that the recording lasts a few seconds, we hardly have time to blink.
But things get complicated if we want to record a prepared sequence or a moment that lasts a few seconds. For example, the explosion of a balloon, the fall of a stone into the water or a jump.
The camera app does not offer any markings that show when super slow motion starts. In fact, it is practically immediate, although later in the reproduction they are seen a couple of seconds at normal speed.
A little trick is to press and hold the trigger, start the action we want to record, and then release the trigger to start recording. We must allow a second between the start of the action and the recording.
It also doesn't hurt not to stick too closely to the main subject and choose to use a tripod, since in super slow motion the movement is more appreciated if we record freehand.
Although the Super Slow Motion mode of the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro works very well, you have to get the hang of it. The truth is that Huawei would have embroidered it with a slightly more extensive interface, with more options to control super slow motion.
