It's called Hotspot, but behind this name hides a very useful function that is neither more nor less than the one that involves carrying a portable, wireless modem in your pocket. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of those smartphones that has this utility, combining the Wi-Fi connection with access to the 3G and 4G data network. And be careful, because the latter makes the latest flagship of the South Korean firm a very interesting terminal, especially if we do not have an additional connection for our laptop or tabletand for work or personal issues we have to move a lot, requiring Internet access with one of these devices. Let's see how we can make our Samsung Galaxy S4 communicate with other terminals to share the connection to mobile networks.
As usual every time we want to tweak aspects of the Samsung Galaxy S4 system, we are going to go to the settings menu. Those who are regular readers of this type of guide will already know how to access it. Two paths lead us to the same point: either the capacitive key to the left of the start button ””, then clicking on “Settings” ””, or displaying the notification curtain and selecting the icon that we will see on the top right with the shape of small gear. Once this is done, we remain in the first of the four tabs that we will find in the upper area and, within this menu, we will click on «More networks».
At this point we will detect four selectable options, among which we will be interested in pointing to the third of them, designated as "Wifi zone and USB modem". We will then move on to another palette of possibilities, although we will focus, for now, on the first, which we will detect as "Wi-Fi Zone", and which is accompanied by a small virtual spring. When it changes position, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will turn off the wireless receiver, taking on the role of transmitter.
At that moment, a blue icon will appear in the notification bar that, once selected, will allow us to configure the network that the phone will distribute. If, once the Hotspot function is activated, we keep our finger pressed on «Wi-Fi Zone» we will access the same configuration menu, from where we could modify parameters such as the devices that have access to the network, the name with which it will be identified, the type of security and password that would allow you to connect to the Samsung Galaxy S4 as a modem. From that moment, the mobile becomes a powerful hotspot.
There is another way to make the Samsung Galaxy S4 a portable modem. To do this, we could use the USB or Bluetooth ports. If we want to use the first method, we will have to connect the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the computer or tablet using the corresponding cable and then select the option "USB Modem"; for the second, it would be "Bluetooth tethering" what we would have to choose. In this way, the Samsung Galaxy S4 would continue to traffic data while sharing its connection with other devices.
