For some time now, the fake ROMs of Xiaomi phones have been the subject of controversy among the different users of the brand. This type of software is included by a multitude of Chinese import stores to translate a version of MIUI that was not initially found in Spanish or other languages beyond Chinese or English. We mean stores like Banggood, Gearbest, or even Aliexpress. But what kind of risks does having a fake ROM in a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 or a Mi MIX 2S entail? And most importantly, how can we tell that we carry a ROM of this type? Let's see it next.
What are the dangers of carrying a fake ROM in a Xiaomi
The dangers of a fake ROM can be as varied as there are Xiaomi models on the market. The first and surely the most accused by users of this type of MIUI versions is the problems related to the performance of the mobile.
Some of these problems are as follows:
- Slow switching between apps
- "Awkward" system gestures
- Laggy camera app
- Badly translated parts of the system with questionable Spanish etc.
- Non-original applications
But these are not the only problems of a fake ROM. In fact, the dangers go far beyond suffering lags when using your mobile. Malicious code, embedded "keyloggers" that record system keystrokes or applications that filter part of our data to sell it to third-party services. Aspects that in addition to reducing the performance of the mobile, endanger the data related to our accounts, passwords and sensitive information (bank accounts, images, photographs, files…).
To this must be added the null support of the ROM in question by Xiaomi. And it is that being a modified version, the system updater will not find the official updates.
How to detect a fake ROM on my Xiaomi mobile
If we have experienced a sudden drop in performance on our Xiaomi mobile or certain applications have stopped working, it is likely that we will find a ROM of doubtful origin. Fortunately, there are methods (specifically three) to see if a ROM is genuine.
See the MIUI version number
Original ROM of a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.
The first (and best) way to tell if a Xiaomi ROM is fake is to look at the MIUI version number. To check this, we will have to go to the Settings application, specifically to About the phone.
In MIUI Version we can see the exact number of the version of our mobile. In the event that the last two numbers end in 0.0 or 9.9, we can confirm that it is a fake ROM.
Find the ROM in MIUI Downloads
The above method of detecting fake ROMs is not foolproof. In fact, in the latest versions of MIUI 10, companies have changed the way they number ROMs.
To check their veracity, the best thing to do is look for our mobile software on the MIUI Downloads page. If we can't find our ROM, it is probably a fake ROM.
Check MIUI updates
The last method to verify that we are facing a fake ROM is to check the updates in the System Updater.
To do this, we will go to the same section of About the phone within the MIUI Settings. Here we will click on System Updater and click on Check for updates. If after several weeks have passed since the launch of the ROM, the new update does not skip us, we can confirm that it is a fake ROM.
