Repair an SD card on Android without saving data
We take the mobile as usual and we see that a message similar to that of “SD card error. Damaged SD card, replace current one ”. Although it may seem like a rare problem, the truth is that it is more frequent than normal. Unfortunately, on Android we only have one way out: format the microSD card (and lose all data).
To do so, it is as easy as going to the Storage section within the System Settings themselves and clicking on the SD Card section. Once inside, two options will appear: Eject and Format. Obviously the one that interests us is the last one. The card will then be formatted and the aforementioned problem will be solved, although we will lose all the data stored on it.
Repair an SD card in Windows keeping data
Do you want to repair an SD card without losing data? As we just mentioned, on Android this is nothing short of impossible. Otherwise it is in Windows, where we can recover data from a damaged SD if it is not corrupt.
Recover corrupted SD card from This computer in Windows
The first thing we will have to do is, how could it be otherwise, insert the card in an SD adapter (we must make sure that the adapter tab is not in Lock) to connect it to a computer. Then we will go to My computer, My computer or This computer (depending on the version of Windows that you have installed and we will right-click on the unit of the SD card in question. Then we will click Properties and then Tools. There it should appear to us an option similar to Check within Error Checking; we will give it and automatically the tool will begin to examine the unit.
Have you found some kind of error? The tool will fix it automatically. When this process is finished we will be able to access the files on the microSD card without any problem.
Recover corrupted SD card from CMD on Windows with CHKDSK
You have followed the steps we have just explained and have not found any errors or cannot recover files from a damaged SD card. At this point we can only resort to the CMD or the famous Windows command machine.
In the first place, and with the microSD card inserted in the computer, we must look at the letter that it has in the section of This previous equipment. In our case it is the letter C.
The next logical step will be, how could it be otherwise, open the CMD. To do this, it is as simple as putting the aforementioned term in the Windows search engine, right-clicking on the program (sometimes it can be called the Command Prompt) and giving the option to Open as administrator.
Once inside the program, we will have to enter the following command:
- chkdsk c: / c (where C is the drive of your microSD card)
Finally we press the Enter key and the program will automatically begin to delete the corrupt files that prevent them from being read. When it's finished, it should show us a series of lines similar to the ones we can see in the screenshot below.
Do you get a message like "The type of file system is RAW"? There is nothing to do. If the analysis does not show a message similar to that of "No more errors have been found" we will have to format the card, which in Windows is as simple as right-clicking on it within This computer and selecting the Format option. If by any chance we want to recover the data from the SD card, we recommend you take a look at this other article.
