There is always something magical about that moment in which we slide the lid of the box of our new mobile to observe it pristine, shiny, waiting for us to use it for the first time.
Although this sounds like a fairy tale, there is something problematic when we do a terminal change. In my case, it would go from a Samsung Galaxy S4 to the brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 right now. But what happens to my data ?
It is true that we have content stored in the cloud thanks to Google, but what about our SMS ? What if we go from a device that has iOS to the S7 ?
Well, Samsung has been clear about it and that is how they have decided to create an application called Smart Switch. They themselves define it as a tool that will help us "easily copy data from one mobile device to another. " There are two versions, Smart Switch for computers, and Smart Switch Mobile for devices. The application is available from both Galaxy Apps and Google Play.
How does the application work?
When we are configuring our Samsung Galaxy 7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, it will ask us if we want to use Smart Switch to speed up the process. If our answer is yes, the only thing we will need is to have our old terminal and its USB cable nearby if it is an Android or Lightning if it is a device with iOS.
If we are short of time or if we cannot access the two services, we can launch the Smart Switch application when it suits us from the S7, and in Settings we will only have to go to the Backup section.
The adapter will go from our S7 to the previous terminal, with which we can transfer data by USB from previous devices that use Android 4.3 or higher, iOS 5 or higher and BlackBerry OS 7 or lower.
Very easy between Galaxy devices
Transferring between Galaxy devices couldn't be easier. We just have to place the two devices close (less than 20 centimeters) and open the application on both. On the old device we will go to Android Device, Start and then Connect. This will send the personal data from it to the new S7.
Beware of encrypted copies on iOS
And it is that the S7 will recognize the device and will guide us through the process. For example, from iOS it will ask for an on-screen confirmation to trust the device when we connect the two devices. Of course, if we encrypt our backups in iTunes, we must uncheck this option before making the file transfer.
Choose what content you want to download to the new device
Once we start the process, our Galaxy will collect all our information in the old terminal and will show us a list of items from each application it has found to transfer from there. We can choose what we want to transfer and start the transfer. From personal data (contacts, messages, notes or calendars), to multimedia data and our saved alarms, WiFi settings, etc.
As always, in these cases, it should be remembered that the two devices must be connected until you notify us that the transfer has been complete. In CNet they have tested the transfer, and it took about 30 minutes to pass about 2 GB of data.
More functionalities
In addition, Smart Switch allows us to make a system restore and a backup of our data on the computer. Both personal data, such as photos, videos, alarms and preferences.
We can also synchronize contacts and calendar between devices with Windows Outlook or Mac Address Book and iCal.
And finally, it will allow us to update our mobile phone with the latest software to make it more stable and thus optimize its performance to the maximum.
