Although users who jailbreak iPhones can record calls, Apple does not seem very in favor of allowing recordings (it does not allow applications to have access to the microphone during a phone call). Here we show you a procedure so you can record your calls even if your iPhone is not jailbroken.
Steps to record calls on an iPhone without jailbreak
This is the procedure you have to follow if you want to record a call on your iPhone:
- Access the Phone application and start a call. When communication is established, click on the Add call option.
- Enter your own phone number and call. Logically, this will cause the call to go to voicemail. But you must have the iPhone's Visual Voicemail enabled for the procedure to work.
- Once the voicemail recording has started, click on the Merge option. In this way, the initial call (the one in step 1) will be merged with the one you are making to your own number, so it will be registered in your voice mailbox.
Finally, remember that you can access calls recorded with this method through the Voicemail tab. From there you can export them using the Share button that you will find in the upper right corner within the same Voicemail tab.
Other possible options
In addition to the method that we have explained, it is also possible to record calls on the iPhone using applications that perform the procedure for you. Many options are only available in the United States, but these can also be used in Spain:
- TapeACall: the Lite version (free) allows you to record the first 60 seconds of the call. You can also purchase the paid version to get all the features.
- BuroVoz is an interesting application available only in Spain and designed for recording calls as evidence for complaints and legal proceedings. This app is, therefore, a legal and safe option to record conversations and obtain the necessary certificates so that they can be used as evidence in processes. BuroVoz is free to download but has purchases integrated in the application, to acquire the necessary credit to make and record calls.
- IntCall is another free downloadable application that works with call credit, which is purchased with in-app purchases.
Legal issues to keep in mind
Although it can be very useful to know how to record phone calls on your smartphone (you can also do it easily on Android), in Spain the law requires that you inform your interlocutor in advance that you are going to record, and they must give you their consent.
In any case, if you want to use the calls as evidence in a complaint or as part of a judicial process, the most interesting option among those we have mentioned is without a doubt the BuroVoz application.
