Are you running out of space on your Xiaomi mobile? Or do you want to increase the storage of your device? A simple way to do this is by using an SD card as the default storage.
The internal space will not be affected by the multimedia content you download on your mobile, and your only restriction will be the storage capacity of the SD card. It is a very easy and fast process to carry out, just a few clicks and you will have the space on your card at your disposal to automatically save photos, videos and some other content.
How to activate the SD card on Xiaomi
If you have not yet activated an SD card to your Xiaomi device, don't worry, it only depends on a few steps.
- Once you have inserted the SD card to your mobile go to Settings >> About the phone
- You scroll to Storage >> SD Card >> Activate SD Card
Once you activate the card, you will see the data with the available space, as well as new options to disconnect or delete the card (to format it). Once you finish these steps, you are ready to set the SD card as the default storage for some content.
How to set SD card as default
To select the SD card as the default storage go to the Storage section >> Storage settings. You will see that it gives the option to change the content of the Camera, Gallery and Themes from internal storage to external.
In other words, all the photos you take with the camera, some of the content that you save in the Gallery and the themes that you download to personalize your mobile, will be automatically saved on the card.
You can make this change as many times as you want by following the steps we mentioned. You can change the storage source for everything or select, for example, that the photos are saved on the card, and the rest of the content is kept in the internal space of the mobile.
As you will see, Xiaomi is very specific about the content that you can save on the SD card. You may be wondering what happens to the rest of the content that you usually download on your mobile, for example, the music you download from Spotify, or Netflix episodes, among many other multimedia apps.
In that case, you will have to manually set that you want to download and save the contents for offline viewing on the SD card. Let's take Spotify for example:
- Open the Spotify app and search for Settings
- Scroll to Other >> Storage and choose SD Card
If you already have music to listen to offline from Spotify saved on your mobile, the message you see in the image will appear. It is normal, since you have to transfer your data, but don't worry, you won't lose anything. And from this configuration, everything you download in the future will be saved on your SD card.
And the same dynamic continues with the rest of the applications that allow you to download content. You only have the Storage section in the app settings. It can be a tedious process to perform this setting manually in each application, but it is easy and only requires you to configure it once.
On the other hand, if you want to move any other type of content (files, music, etc.) remember that you need to format the card (from the Erase SD card option) so that there are no problems.
