iOS 14, the new version of the iPhone operating system, has interesting news. One of the most popular is the ability to perform actions by double-tapping the back. But there is a function that is not so well known and that can also be very useful. It's about the ability to change the default browser on the iPhone. So you can do it.
By default, Safari is the default browser for iOS. That is, when we need to open a link in an app, it will automatically open it in Safari (except for some apps, which do allow us to select the browser). The same when we ask Siri or do a quick search. In previous versions there was no possibility to change the default browser. However, Apple had to face different monopolistic accusations for not including an option for the user to choose another competing browser. Apple's response has been to add this tweak in iOS 14.
The truth is that changing the default browser is quite simple. Of course, not all internet browsing applications have the option. Keep in mind that iOS 14 has just come out, and few apps have updated with the possibility of setting a default browser. Chrome, one of the most popular, has. You have included this option through an update to your app. Therefore, the first thing you have to do is update the app. To do this, go to the App Store and click on the icon in the upper area. Next, in the 'Updates' section, check if there is a new version of your browser and update.
Steps to change the default browser
So you can change the default browser in iOS 14.
Once updated, it's time to change the default browser. To do this, you must take into account which browser you want to set as the main one, since the option is within the settings of that application. In all cases the steps are the same. In my case, I'm going to do it with Google Chrome.
First, you have to go to the iPhone settings. Next, in the applications section we look for the Chrome app. Within the settings a new section will appear called 'Default browser app'. When you click, a list of available browsers will appear. Click on Chrome or the one we want to set as the default. Finally, we return to Home.
From now on, the links will not open with Safari, but with the browser that you have set as the default. Of course, you can continue using Safari for any query and it is likely that Apple apps use their own browser when looking for information.
If you want to make Safari the default browser again, you will have to follow the same steps. The Safari settings do not allow this change, so the only way is to go back to the app that we have as default (in my case Google Chrome) and in the option of 'Default browser app', re-mark Safari or whatever another that appears in the list.
